5A Preseason Preview

Center Hill Mustangs

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 23

Players to watch for:

Josh Jackson 6-7 2017 F/C

Caleb Henry 5-10 2017 G

Kentrell Dorsey 6-5 2018 F

Tournaments, classics and events:

November 5 Olive Branch Classic

November 8 Center Hill Classic

December 16 New Site Shootout

December 17 BIGG Christmas Classic @ Biggersville

December 27-29 Stage Coach Classic @ Bartlett TN

What to look for this year:

Center Hill is coming off the best season in school history which included making the state semifinals. That team put 3 guys into college playing ball. Coach Mealer has full faith in his team and really put a tough schedule together. 5-10 2017 G Caleb Henry will be controlling the offense and using his 2 big weapons. Those weapons are 6-7 2017 F/C Josh Jackson and 6-5 2018 F Kentrell Dorsey. Jackson is the do it all guy that will contribute in many ways. Dorsey is another one of a kind as well. Coach Mealer told me last year that Dorsey has potential to be the best player he has ever coached and that includes several NBA players. All three of these guys are receiving college interest and it should really pick up even more this season. The Mustangs will have time to overcome the schedule and gel together before making a push in the playoffs. “If we come out of the first half of the season ok, it will help us deep in the season.” commented Coach Mealer.

Clarksdale Wildcats

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 64

Players to watch for:

Dykelius “Pooh Bear” Grandberry 5-7 2017 PG

Esaias Furdge 6-0 2018 G

Jemetrius Hall 6-2 2017 G

Tournaments, classics and events:

November 22 Coahoma County Thanksgiving Tournament

What to look for this year:

The Wildcats had a big time run last season in Jackson. This season, Coach Hill will look to get one step further with his guys. He said, “Our guys are going to be a lot more physical this year when they get back from football.” Leading the team will be one of the most electric guards in the state, 5-7 2017 PG Dykelius Grandberry. Pooh Bear has the ability to shoot, distribute or finish over opponents as he puts them on a poster. 6-0 2018 G Esaias Furdge developed into the best overall player for the Wildcats last season. 6-2 2017 G Jemetrius Hall will provide defensive help this season. Watch for Clarksdale to make another push in Jackson this season.

Lake Cormorant Gators

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 131

Players to watch for:

Tradarrius “Tray” Bailey 6-0 2017 SG

Korrey Miller 5-11 2017 PG

Montez Allen 6-5 2018 G/F

Tournaments, classics and events:

October 29 Lake Cormorant Jamboree

December 27-28 Peggy Bain Memerial Classic @ Alcorn Central

What to look for this year:

The Gators go into this season with three key leaders. 6-0 2017 SG Tray Bailey will be looked at to contribute heavy scoring. 5-11 2017 PG Korrey Miller will be called upon to run the offense and set up the team. His distribution skills will help his fellow teammates out greatly. Then you have 6-5 2018 G/F Montez Allen. Coach Worsham described him as the best player in Desoto County that nobody knows about. He played out of position last season to help the team and is being moved back to a more natural spot this year. Look for Allen to have a break out season and for his recruiting to heat up. Look for the Gators come together with a very athletic squad and make a push late in the season.

Lewisburg Patriots

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 253

Tournaments, classics and events:

December 28-30 Battle at the Barn @ Lewisburg

What to look for this year:

The Patriots come into the season in hopes of making a push in the playoffs this season. Coach Tipton will have his guys much improved and ready for the season to start.

New Hope Trojans

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 41

Players to watch for:

Terryonte Thomas 6-4 2017 G

JaQuante Bell 6-5 2017 F

Jay Shinn 6-0 2017 F

Andrew Junkin 7-0 2018 C

Tyler Stevenson 6-6 2018 G

Kyree Fields 6-1 2018 G

Tournaments, classics and events:

November 25 Lighthouse Classic @ Corinth vs Chalmette, LA

November 26 Starkville Thanksgiving Classic

December 16-17 Joe Horne Christmas Classic

December 29-30 New Hope Holiday Bash

January 7 Tangle on the Trail @ Pontotoc

What to look for this year:

Not bad when a possible starting line-up can look like this: 7-0, 6-6, 6-5, 6-4 and 6-1. New Hope will be lead by 6-4 2017 G Terryonte Thomas. The bulldog, not that he is going to the bulldogs but plays like one, will have plenty around him this year to make a serious run at the title. 7-0 2018 C Andrew Junkin, who grew over the summer as a player while playing travel ball, will lock down the post on the defensive end. 6-5 2017 F JaQuante Bell, transfer from West Lowndes, will also provide some bulk down low. I’ve also been told to keep an eye on the emergence of 6-6 2018 G Tyler Stevenson this season. 6-0 2017 F Jay Shinn and 6-1 2018 G Kyree Fields will also play significant roles with the team this year. Coach McBrayer has a chance to make a statement in 5A and he also compiled a schedule that would get them ready for the tough playoff road as well.

Oxford Chargers

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 47

Players to watch for:

Jarkel Joiner 6-1 2017 G

Terry Williams 6-0 2017 G

Tournaments, classics and events:

December 9-10 O Town Showdown @ Oxford

December 19-22 Briercrest TN Christmas Tournament

December 28-30 Great 8 Tournament @ Jefferson City, MO

What to look for this year:

The Chargers return one of the top players in the state in 6-1 2017 G Jarkel Joiner. The electric guard really took off this summer for Team Penny. Joiner averaged  29 ppg last season and will look to continue that again this year. Joiner has offers from TCU, Little Rock, UTEP, MTSU, New Mexico State and Cal-Bakersfield. 6-0 2017 G Terry Williams will be back to give Jarkel a hand on the defensive end and help provide scoring on the offensive side of the court. Coach Tyler described, “Jarkel and Terry are one of the best back courts in Mississippi this year.”

Saltillo Tigers

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 35

Players to watch for:

Jayven Humphrey 6-3 2018 F

John Michael Sanders 5-10 2017 SG

Julian Warren 5-11 2018 PG

Isiah Hardy 2018

T.J. Hannah 6-3 2020

Tournaments, classics and events:

November 19 Amory Classic

November 21 Saltillo Classic

December 3 Smithville Shootout

December 27-28 Peggy Bain Memorial Invitational @ Alcorn Central

December 30 Rumble on the River @ ICC

January 13-14 Lee County Tournament @ Nettleton

What to look for this year:

The Tigers will be a late coming team this season after making a trip to the Big House last year. Coach Lauderdale has his leading scorer and rebounder returning from last season, 6-3 2018 F Jayven “Hump” Humphey (17 ppg, 8 rpg). Much like a bad Christmas present, he will have to wait until after Christmas before he gets his returning PG back. Bad because he will have missed a good bit of the season due to a football injury. That returning guard is 5-11 2018 Julian “Dreke” Warren. 5-10 2017 SG John Michael Sanders will provide a scoring punch. The sharp shooter is deadly from 3-point range and I know this because he was coached at a young age by yours truly. Saltillo will use several players at each position to help gain experience for division play. With the added depth, this Saltillo team has a chance to be a very solid team down the stretch.

West Point Green Wave

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 71

Players to watch for:

Austin Crowley 6-4 2019 G

Shaunderrius Westbrook 5-8 2017 G

Alonzo Brooks 6-2 2017 G

Tournaments, classics and events:

October 29 West Point Jamboree

November 5 West Point Classic

November 26 Starkville Thanksgiving Classic

What to look for this year:

West Point will be guard and forward heavy this season. That being said, defensively they will mix things up and try and keep teams off balance. Offensively, the Green Wave shouldn’t have any issue spreading people out and letting their speed and quickness create scoring opportunities. Coach Cox noted that he has some really long athletic forwards that can cause some defensive issues to go with his potent guard play on offense. It will all start with 6-4 2019 G Austin Crowley. With some hard work and staying after it, Crowley has a chance to sneak into the national rankings this season. Crowley is already one of the best 2019’s in the state. He has the ability to shoot from long range, get to the basket with ease or stop and pop a jumper on you. 5-8 2017 G Shaunderrius Westbrook will provide the shooting spark. 6-2 2017 G Alonzo Brooks is a very athletic player that will help spread the court as well.

Canton Tigers

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 86

Players to watch for:

Javian Fleming 6-8 2018 C

7-1 wingspan

Tournaments, classics and events:

December 19 Ridgeland Titan Shootout

What to look for this year:

Coach Evans will come into the season with one of the hottest players in the state. 6-8 2018 C Javian Fleming has blown up in offers. The big man, and his 7-1 wingspan, has some of the best footwork in the state and should continue his domination down low that he developed over the summer. Canton could be a big time player in the playoffs if the Tigers can get solid play from the guys around Fleming.

Germantown Mavericks

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 194

Players to watch for:

Will Young 2019 PG

Bryson Thompson 6-0 2018 G

Zachary Jones 6-7 2018 C

Tournaments, classics and events:

November 5 Germantown Classic

November 28-December 3 Madison County Tournament

December 29-30 Pearl Christmas Tournament

January 14 Lafayette Shootout

January 21 Vicksburg Shootout

What to look for this year:

The Mavericks will have an obstacle to overcome this season. Youth and inexperience will be the a growing pain but that can be a positive down the road. 2019 PG Will Young can lead the team and control the flow of the game. 6-0 2018 G Bryson Thompson can generate leadership to help push the team. One of the other positives will be the option of having some size down low. 6-7 2018 C Zachary Jones will help control the post. Coach Bradley to also help his guys adjust to his style of play. He likes to control the tempo of the game with his defense. If his younger guys can learn his style, they could be playing their best ball and be grown together by playoff time.

Grenada Chargers

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 39

Players to watch for:

Josiah Lewis 6-6 2018 C

6-10 wingspan

Christian Cain 6-2 2018 G

Markyel Pittman 6-3 2019 F

Malik Jones 6-3 2019

Tournaments, classics and events:

November 5 Holmes Classic

November 25-26 Memphis Tournament

What to look for this year:

The Chargers will be under the leadership of a new Coach this season. Coach Cooley comes in and takes over a talented group of young guys. Leading the charge for the Chargers will be 6-2 2018 G Christian Cain. Cain is a player that can do everything for you and is poised for a breakout campaign. 6-6 2018 C Josiah Lewis will use his 6-10 wingspan to cause havoc around the basket. 6-3 2019 F Markyel Pittman and 6-3 2019 Malik Jones will both get quality minutes to grow over the season.

Holmes County Central Jaguars

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 52

Players to watch for:

Robert Boyd 6-1 2017 G

Lemondre Brown 6-0 2017 SG

Demarcus Middleton 2020

McKenzie Roby 2020

David Ceasar 6-2 2018 G/F

Tournaments, classics and events:

November 5 Holmes County Central Classic

What to look for this year:

Coach Patrick is looking forward to having one of his better teams, and that says a lot compared to the teams he’s had in the past. This team will start with a 4 year starter, 6-1 2017 G Robert Boyd. The rising mid-major prospect is a burst of speed that will look to push his team up the court. The long range shooter, 6-0 2017 SG Lemondre Brown, will give Boyd a great target to kick out to when he blows by the defense. 6-2 2018 G/F David Ceasar can play 4 positions on the court. Holmes County Central will also have some young and talented players in the mix. 2020’s Demarcus Middleton and Mckenzie Roby will get some time on the court. Coach Patrick has one of his most talented teams ever, however, he will look to utilize his undersized team in many different ways this year. Watch for one of the brightest Coaches in the state to put a serious contender on the court.

Lanier Bulldogs

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 72

Tournaments, classics and events:

December 16 Ridgeland Invitational

What to look for this year:

Coach Hilliard will take over a retooling Lanier team. The Bulldogs lost leaders Denzel McDuffey and Jerez Porter to transfer. They will look to replace the duo this season.

Neshoba Central Rockets

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 7

Players to watch for:

Chayton York 2017 PG

TJ Ben 6-3 2017 SG

Bobby Anderson 2017

Future players to watch for:

Austin Day 6-1 2020

Justice Day 6-2 G

Tournaments, classics and events:

November 26 Starkville Thanksgiving Classic

December 30 Rumble on the River @ ICC

What to look for this year:

The Rockets took off last season and only lost two games in the regular season. However, two more costly losses in the division tournament sent Neshoba Central home early. The Rockets could have been argued as the best team in 5A but just had the two untimely losses. This is a new year for Coach Byrd and his guys. 2017 PG Chayton York returns to run the offense. 6-3 2017 SG TJ Ben will be back to provide a scoring punch. 2017 Bobby Anderson will contribute on both ends of the court. 6-2 G Justice Day is a smooth lefty that will contribute. The Rockets will also get some key minutes from 6-1 2020 Austin Day. Day is a big time athlete and will come in after football is over. Neshoba Central was the most well oiled machine that I had the opportunity to see last season. The passing game was so crisp and precise. If the best floor waxing man in the state can get his guys moving as smooth as last years team, keep a close eye on them.

Ridgeland Titans

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 32

Players to watch for:

Azahel Mohamed “Mo” Hare 6-3 2017 G/F

Daveon Goodloe 6-0 2018 G

Darius Kent 6-0 2018 G

Lorenzo “Trey” Fort 6-0 2019

Tournaments, classics and events:

November 22 Thanksgiving Challenge

December 10 Curtis Loggins Classic @ Calhoun City

December 16, 17 & 19  Ridgeland Titan Shootout Challenge

January 14 Philadelphia Shootout

What to look for this year:

Coach Davidson says it all starts with grit and grind and playing solid D. He had one of the stingiest zones in the state last year and looks to keep that trend going this season as well. 6-3 2017 G/F Mo Hare will lead the team on the offensive end. 2018’s 6-0 G Daveon Goodloe and 6-0 G Darius Kent will provide added punch on both ends of the court. 6-0 2019 G Trey Fort will give the Titans key minutes. Another key player to keep an eye on is 2020 Jeff Blackmon. Ridgeland will be successful this season if they can control the tempo and control the basketball.

Vicksburg Gators

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 101

Tournaments, classics and events:

January 16 MLK Classic @ Lanier

What to look for this year:

Coach Robinson will bring his Gators back this season after a disappointing 2 point loss on the road in the playoffs.

Laurel Golden Tornadoes

Defending 5A Champs

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 9

Players to watch for:

Dontario Drummond 6-3 2017 G/F

Troymain Crosby 6-4 2017 G/F

Je’vah Jones 6-2 2017 G/F

Tournaments, classics and events:

November 22 Joe Barlow Thanksgiving Tournament @ St. Martin

January 14 MLK Shootout @ Laurel

What to look for this year:

The Golden Tornadoes will look to destroy the competition this season. Laurel did lose several key players on the title team but still have several returning. Of those is 6-4 2017 G/F Troymain Crosby. Mr. Hardware (MAC Jr All-Star Game MVP and State Tournament MVP last season) will be a big force this season. He is a perfect, stat stuffing guard that does everything he can to make his team and teammates better. 6-3 2017 G/F Dontario Drummond will be back to build on his great run he had in the playoffs.5-7 2017 PG Charles Winston will help run the offense. 6-2 2017 G/F JeVah Jones will play key minutes to help Laurel. Coach Price will have his hockey team……. Yes, I know they are really a basketball team but they are like a hockey team. He has them playing very physical and all out. He also uses 15 guys and subs them out 5 at a time just like hockey. Laurel might start out slow in November and December due to waiting on football players and learning team chemistry but you can bet Coach Price will have his guys ready in March when it counts.

South Jones Braves

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 133

Tournaments, classics and events:

November 5 Petal Classic

December 17 Wayne County Hoops

December 29-31 Hattiesburg Coca Cola Classic

Garius Ray 6-3 2019 G

Kethern Vaugh 6-1 2018 G

JaDarius Davis 6-3 2019 F

Tournaments, classics and events:

October 29 Wayne County Jamboree

November 5 Petal Classic

November 21-22 Lawrence County Thanksgiving Tournament

December 16-17 Wayne County Holiday Hoops

December 27-28 Bay High Christmas Tournament

January 14 & 16 MLK Classic @ Laurel

January 21 Wayne County Rotary Tournament

What to look for this year:

Wayne County made it to the 5A title game last season. This season they might make it one step further. The crazy amount of athletic depth that Coach Davis has to play with this season is very similar to what Laurel had last year, and we see how that worked out for them. The War Eagles will come out playing like they are going to war with a full-court blitz attack and they will deploy the full arsenal of weaponry in doing so. Playing nearly 15 players every game will keep the team healthy and wear down the opposing teams throughout the game. Expect a fast paced offense that is produced by the crazy defense. 6-5 2017 G David Gaines Jr should get some big time attention this year from D1 schools. He showed great ability to run the floor and run his team during the summer and has made big time improvements in his game. Wayne County might even make a push this year as being the best team in the state, not just 5A.

West Jones Mustangs

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 234

Players to watch for:

Brandon Jones 6-0 2017 SG

Future players to watch for:

Tajrick Randolph 2021 SG

Khalil Herron 6-1 2020 SG

Tournaments, classics and events:

December 28-29 West Jones Christmas Tournament

What to look for this year:

West Jones went through a rebuilding year last season and the Mustangs hope that it will help payoff this season. 5-11 2017 Brandon Jones will be the main attraction. He will be forced to be the man due to a football injury to his running mate, 5-10 2018 Peyton Brown. Brown suffered a ACL and MCL injury and will miss the 2016-17 season. 6-1 2020 SG Khalil Herron will get a chance to get a little experience this season. Also keep an eye out for 2021 SG Tajrick Randolph. If he doesn’t get a chance to get some varsity action this year, watch out for him next season. Coach Keyes expects his guys to be much improved despite the injury setback of one of his stars. He thinks his team will be very competitive and give teams a run for their money this year.

Brookhaven Panthers

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 24

Players to watch for:

Damarius Brooks 5-8 2017 G

Tournaments, classics and events:

October 29 Terry Jamboree

December 29-30 West Jones Christmas Tournament

What to look for this year:

Coach Butler will look for huge leadership this year from 5-8 2017 G Damarius Brooks. Brooks can shoot the ball, attack with a strong finish or create and share the ball. He also added that Brooks is a great defender and rebounder while still being very coachable. I’ve heard several Coaches talking about Ole Brook being a team to watch for this season in 5A.

Natchez Bulldogs

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 152

What to look for this year:

Coach Haywood will bring his Bulldogs into this season and try to improve from last years team.

November 7 Olive Branch Classic

November 19 Jack Flynn Classic @ Horn Lake

November 26 Capital City Hoops Classic @ Clinton

December 26-28 JPS Christmas Tournament

January 16 Rumble in the South @ MS College

What to look for this year:

This year the Rams will be in the reloading mode. And as you know, Coach Gaines will not have any problems firing on all cylinders by the end of the season. Coach Gaines only has three guys coming back with experience. They are 6-5 2017 Johnny Bingham, 2018 F Dontavius Smith and 6-3 2017 G Anthony Johnson. The success of Provine will all start with Johnson. He will hold the fort down until late December. 6-1 2017 G Antonio Taylor will return around Christmas and he will be the one to watch for. Taylor is described to me as being a similar version of Enrique Milton with a smoother shot. Now that’s a statement because I loved the way Enrique played. Younger guys getting in the mix this season will be 2018 G Jaquandre Bethany, 2018 G Ladarius Anderson, 2019 G Rodarian Pendleton and 2019 G Mikevious Marshall. Coach Gaines stated, “We will need a little time to work the kinks out but we will work hard and have everything figured out by the end of the season.” He also attributes a very tough schedule to being a key to getting his guys ready for the playoffs. Keep an eye out for Provine to reload and be a key player going into the playoffs.

Shermontis Mitchell 6-4 2019 PF

Tournaments, classics and events:

November 5 Lanier Bulldog Classic

November 12 Kosciusko Invitational

What to look for this year:

The Falcons will be flying under the guidance of a new Coach this season. Coach Gatlin comes over the help lead a very talented squad. Leading this squad will be 6-1 2017 G La’Andre Thomas and 6-5 2017 F/C Robert Washington. Wingfield will be blessed with great team size this season. Washington will have 6-5 2017 PF Jamal Jones, 6-4 2018 SF Robert Medlock and 6-4 2019 SF Shermontis Mitchell around him. 6-1 2018 PG Alfonzo Green will contribute from the guard spot. This size and depth could propel Wingfield into the playoffs and farther this season. Coach Gatlin says, “Our goal is to compete every play, every day.” Watch for them to be very competitive this season.

What to look for this year:

The Tigers will rely on speed and quickness this season to get the best of other teams. Coach Watson said his team will need to grow together. He hopes to use his smaller sized guys to try and control the defensive end with a good team speed. Returning starter, 6-1 2017 G Alex Harris will provide leadership along with the transfer from Columbia, 5-8 2017 G/F Eric Thompson.6-3 2018 F William Robinson and 6-0 2018 SG DeAndre Humbles will provide a punch when they get back from playing football. 2018 JaQuan Tenner will give some valuable minutes. The player with the most potential talent on the Tiger roster, 2019 F KeyShawn Prince will continue to grow as the season goes along.

January 16 MLK Classic @ Lanier

January 28 Hoopfest @ MS Coast Coliseum

What to look for this year:

The Maroon Tide go into this season fresh and new. A fresh start is sometimes a good thing, sometimes it can be a slow hindrance. Picayune will have the talent and some good size this season. The hard part will be learning how to play together, putting bad habits to the side and being consistent. 2017’s 6-5 F Stephan Ayangma and 6-3 F Darrius Littles will help man the post. 6-1 2017 G Gary Travis will bring leadership to the guard spot. 6-0 2018 G Delrae Smith and 6-0 2019 G Marvun Arnold will bring younger help to the show. Coach Thompson talked about the problems of a new start, “How well and how quickly we learn to adjust will determine our ability to be successful this year.”
