He will have a team full of seniors and juniors but it will be a growing process. He will need to transform them to play in his system. Coach Pearson described. “We will be trying to change the mindset and culture to where we can compete and get over that hump.” His will instill in his guys to play hard and this will build to the longevity of the Panther program.

Corinth Warriors

Defending 4A Champs

November 26 Lighthouse Thanksgiving Classic @ Corinth vs Velma Jackson

What to look for this year:

The Warriors will be missing some really good guys from last years championship team. No problem. They are just reloading. Leading the charge will be 6-0 2018 G Tada Stricklen. Tada is explosive off the jump and can play with the best of them. The rising D1 recruit is gaining interest with his killer jump shot and in your face defense. Helping him will be 5-11 2018 G Jon D Warren. Jon D is a shooter that will play as a pass first point guard. Corinth really improved as the season went along last year and this team has potential to be just as good as last season. Coach Greene described his team, “We are really young and it will be fun watching them grow as the season moves on.” They could be trouble for 4A if they grow like last years team did.

Itawamba AHS Indians

What to look for this year:

Coach Wilson comes over from Starkville for his first head Coaching job. He will rely on the leadership of 5-10 2017 G Tristan Crowder to pace his team. 6-5 2017 F/C Austin King will provide a boost with his mid range and low post game. 6-4 2019 Jaxon Orr has some great length and is a very good shooter. 5-9 2017 PG Colbe Hodges controls the ball and will have limited turnovers. Coach Wilson will use his vast experience to get his really young team together and Itawamba will be a team to watch for in the future. Coach Wilson said, “As long as my guys give effort and play aggressive defense we will have fun and run on offense.”

Pontotoc Warriors

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 58

December 17 All American Shootout @ Tupelo

December 27 Bruce Shootout

December 30 Rumble on the River @ ICC

January 7 Tangle on the Trail @ Pontotoc

January 28 Hot Bed Classic @ New Albany

What to look for this year:

Pontotoc will expect a lot this season from 6-6 2017 G/F Ty Jones. Ty is the perfect mismatch due to his elusive speed and size. He is faster than the big guys and can post up the shorter guys. His hands and touch around the glass to go with his handles puts in a position to get buckets whenever he wants to. 5-11 2018 G Cortavius Shelton will contribute on the offensive end since he seems to be magician. He always finds the open spot. The floor general will be 5-8 2017 PG Isaiah Miller. Miller really did some growing and developing over the summer and is ready to take the Warriors to the next level, maybe even all the way. His ability to knock down long range shots and always find the open man will go perfect with his Warrior teammates. 6-1 2017 F Jerrick Ray and 6-0 2018 G Jacob Ginn will be able to stretch the defense and knock down the open 3 balls. 6-1 2018 F Austin Morphis and 6-1 2018 Jon Fleming will battle down low. The Warriors lack size this season but have the speed and depth to make up for it. This is the best passing team that  I watched over the summer. Coach Vandiver has his guys playing like they are putting on a passing clinic. This team is very similar to last years Corinth team that won it all.

Shannon Red Raiders

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 43

Players to watch for:

C.J. Brim 5-9 2017 G

Rance Champ 2017 SG

Jay Dilworth 2017 G

Ramoun Shumpert 2017 C

Tournaments, classics and events:

November 21-22 Niceville, FL Tournament

December 3 Doc Vandiver Classic @ Baldwyn

December 10 Curtis Loggins Classic @ Calhoun City

December 17 BIGG Christmas Classic @ Biggersville

December 30 Rumble on the River @ ICC

What to look for this year:

Coach Brim expects his team to build off the experience they gained from making it to last years state semi-final. His arsenal coming back played major minutes in last years run as well. He will look to get the leadership from his son, 5-9 2017 G C.J. Brim. C.J. improved greatly over the summer playing travel ball and attending camps. His improvement will likely land him onto a mid-major before it’s all said and done. With C.J. controlling the game, look for 2017 SG Rance Champ to continue to be a major scoring force for the Red Raiders. I heard one Coach describe his shot as, “Let him get his feet set and it’s like a layup for him from long range.” 2017 G Jay Dilworth will be a big contributor on the offensive and defensive ends. 6-5ish 2017 C Ramoun Shumpert will hold the post down for Shannon. The Red Raiders should also have plenty of depth this season to go along with an experienced starting group.

Tishomingo County Braves

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 190

Players to watch for:

Caleb McCalmon 6-4 2017 G/F

Kyle Parrish 6-6 2017 G/F

Jermaine Duckett 6-2 2017 G/F

Future players to watch for:

Tucker Hill 6-6 2019 G

Braxton Pritchard 5-10 PG

Tournaments, classics and events:

October 29 New Site Jamboree

What to look for this year:

Coach Dailey is really excited about the effort his Braves have shown over the summer. Tish Co will be lead by 6-4 2017 G/F Caleb McCalmon. The high flyer brings a skill set to the game that is multidimensional. He can shoot outside, pop a pull up or take it in the lane and finish over people. 6-2 2017 G/F Jermaine Duckett will bring the athleticism to the team that will allow him to slash in the paint and open it up for the big outside shooters. 6-6 2017 G/F Kyle Parrish can drain the long ball. 6-6 2019 G Tucker Hill also has a smooth lefty stroke from outside. Hill could develop into a D1 guy if he spends plenty of time in the gym. 5-10 PG Braxton Pritchard can shoot from the outside and get to the basket when needed. The key for the Braves this season is keeping McCalmon healthy and continuing to improve as a team with the same effort they played with in the summer. If Coach Daily can keep this trend going, keep an eye out for them down the stretch.

2-4A

Byhalia Indians

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 33

Players to watch for:

Avion Graham 6-0 2017 G

Jamaris Briggs 6-7 2017 F/C

Tournaments, classics and events:

October 29 Jamboree

November 21 MLK Tournament

December 27-28 Peggy Bain Memorial Classic

What to look for this year:

Coach Sales will have his Indians ready as always this season. Byhalia will be guided this season by 6-0 2017 G Avion Graham. The smooth guard should look for an increase in recruiting this season. 6-7 2017 F/C Jamaris Briggs will maintain the post for the Indians.

Lafayette Commodores

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 197

Players to watch for:

Hogan Linzy 6-6 2018 G/F

What to look for this year:

Coach Sherman will look for his rising junior to lead the way this season. 6-6 2018 G/F Hogan Linzy is one of the smartest basketball players in the state and he proves it with his 32 ACT score. The big G/F can step out and shoot or find the open man with ease. The Commodores could be a much improved team this season.

New Albany Bulldogs

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 77

Players to watch for:

Jordan Lipsey 5-7 2018 G

Sam McMillin 6-2 2017 SG

Future players to watch for:

Mitchell Shettles 5-10 2020 G

Tournaments, classics and events:

January 28 Hot Bed Classic @ New Albany

What to look for this year:

The Bulldogs go into this season under the leadership of 6-2 2017 SG Sam McMillin and 6-3 2017 F Sam Cagle. 5-7 2018 G Jordan Lipsey has no issue scoring the ball. 5-10 2020 G Mitchell Shettles is a shooter to keep your eye on as he develops over the season. Coach Burdette will enter his second season in MS and he will have the young Bulldog team playing at its top potential this season.

November 25 Lighthouse Thanksgiving Classic @ Corinth vs Biggersville

December 30 Rumble on the River @ ICC

January 5 Tippah County Tournament @ Ripley

January 14 North Pontotoc Classic

January 21 Aberdeen Shootout

What to look for this year:

The Ripley Tigers jump out this year with a killer schedule that should have them well prepared by the time playoffs roll around. This Tiger team will be lead by explosive 6-0 2017 G Dewayne Cox. Cox really doesn’t look like he’s doing much during the game and then you look at the stat sheet close to the end of the 4th and he is messing around wit ha triple-double. He had a really good summer and look for his recruiting to pick up this season. 6-3 2017 Jamontae Cox and 5-10 2017 SG Cole Rodgers will be a supporting cast for Dewayne. 5-10 2018 G Iverson Smith is a scrappy player that can mix it up on both ends of the court. He will provide a scoring punch when needed and he also has the ability to find the open man.Coach Kirk fell 5 points short of making a trip to Jackson last season with a 23-7 team in his first season as being a head Coach. Expect the added strength of schedule to give them the boost they need this season.

What to look for this year:

Coach Scott will be replacing the nucleus of his team from last years squad. The Lions lost six out of nine guys with playing experience. The Wildcats lost eight seniors from last years team. Coming back will be the second leading scorer in 5-8 2018 G Quintiyus Causey. The defensive stopper will be 6-0 2017 G Jerry Smith. Cleveland will be one of the smallest teams in MS with the biggest player being 6-0. Cleveland will be very fast and they will play very hard under Coach Strong. He said, “We will play hard nosed defense and learn to execute on offense.”

November 5 Clarksdale Tip-off Classic

November 20-21 Gentry Thanksgiving Classic

December 28-30 Hattiesburg Coca Cola Classic

January 16 Lanier MLK Classic

What to look for this year:

Gentry had one of the toughest, fastest and best defensive teams around last season. Coach Potts thinks that this years team might be his best defensive team yet. He is in his third year at Gentry and the players are starting to learn and understand him as a coach and what he expects of them on the defensive end. 5-11 2017 G Rickey Smith is one of the best defenders for the Rams. The lefty can get to the basket and finish in traffic on the offensive end. 5-9 2017 G Cartisco Brown is a scorer that has the ability to take over a game. Then you get to the 2018’s. 5-8 2018 PG Reginald Bolden should start to get serious looks this season from colleges. The Mighty Mouse looking guard plays all out and will not back down from anybody. Coach Potts described him as being tough as nails. He even caught my dad’s attention at a camp over the summer, and that’s hard to do. 6-4 2018 SF Ernest Minton could have a breakout season if he continues to bring his energy to the court. He will be hard to handle on the boards and around the basket on offense. 6-4 2019 SF Darrius Clark will continue to grow as a player as the season goes on. He improved his outside game over the summer to go along with his great athletic ability. Coach Potts will have his Rams right back in the top of 4A this season.

Yes, the Rangers fell 4 points short in overtime to Corinth, at Corinth, in the 4A playoffs. Raymond will be a problem this year. Coach Green will have a more balanced, junior lead team with plenty of depth. 6-6 2018 F Cameron Woodall and 6-5 2018 G/F SharDarrion Allen will be the key athletes to help run the Rangers. 2018 F Jekeivious Williams and 2018 G/F Jared Keyes will help their fellow classmates out to propel Raymond. Players to watch for:

Keyshawn Gladney 6-0 2018 G

Chris Frazier 6-4 2017 C

Stefan Jones 5-9 2017 G

What to look for this year:

The Wildcats return 10 players that saw significant minutes from last season. This years team will use that depth to put defense as the main focus. The deep bench will also provide a balanced scoring attack that will be created by the stingy defense. Key contributors to watch for this year will be the guard combination 6-0 2018 G Keyshawn Gladney and 5-9 2017 G Stefan Jones. Keep an eye on 6-4 2017 C Chris Frazier in the post. Louisville went to the playoffs last season after a short hiatus under the direction of a new Coach. What to look for this year:

The Tigers had the toughest schedule in the state last season. Coach Crawford, in his first year at Noxubee County, thinks that benefited his guys greatly. Coach Crawford took West Lowndes to the title game last season and he now brings that experience to Macon. He has the leading scorer back in 6-0 2017 lefty G Jaqwavian Jones. 6-3 2019 G Dantonio Deloach is one of the most athletic players on the team. 6-3 2017 Coby Clark and 6-1 2017 G Armoni Clark provide added scoring. The Tigers will bring in some toughness with 6-0 2019 Maliek Stallings, 6-2 2017 Kymbotric Mason and 6-5 2017 C Antonio Roby after football season is over. Coach Crawford said. “His guys have been working hard and are looking good right now.” The Tigers are in rebuild mode but Coach Crawford is looking to win right away and turn this team loaded with athletes into a physical program. This team could very easily be a dark horse going into the playoffs.

Brandon is possibly the best big man in the state with an outside/inside game. His 7-0 wingspan helps him defensively and offensively with passing. Bryson is one of the better defenders in the state and is improving his offensive game from the outside. They come in and join 2018 PG Chanston Berry. Berry is the floor general. 6-2 2018 G/F Kenneth Fultz will be a rebounder and defender for the Tigers. 6-6 2017 F/C Cortland Johnson will be a cleanup guy on the boards.
