5A Preseason Preview

5A Preseason Preview

1-5A

Division Breakdown:

I feel really bad for Lewisburg and Lake Cormorant but as they say what doesn’t kill you will make you stronger. They will both be fighting for the three spot with Olive Branch and Center Hill going for glory. Olive Branch should come away with the title because they are a national level team. The defending 5A State Champs will be playing the hardest schedule in the state with travels to Florida, Kentucky and Massachusetts. They start out the season as a MaxPreps Top 30 Team in the country. But don’t count Coach Mealer and Center Hill out. They are a very good team and will lay the wood to many teams this year.

Division Breakdown:

Saltillo will most likely continue to dominate the division with another very solid team. Coach Brad Gray will bring some new energy to Lafayette and I think he will have some positive results. Grenada and West Point could battle it out for the three hole. Grenada will have a senior led team and that should help them throughout the season. West Point will be athletic and scrappy this season.

Division Breakdown:

This division took a hit with the loss of several D1 players. Canton took the largest loss but will still be a very athletic team with some size. Holmes County Central actually gained with the combining of the Durant players. Coach Patrick brings on some talented players to go with his younger studs. Cleveland Central has several pieces still in place but will be young at some positions. Neshoba Central will be fighting an uphill battle in this division but as we all know, never count Coach Byrd out. He is one of the best coaches in the state at getting the most out of his guys.

Division Breakdown:

Another tough division. Ruffin is just too good to bet against at this point and he should have Callaway in the leaders position. Vicksburg is good, very good. They have some monsters waiting to be unleashed on 5A. They are a team that I can’t wait to see. Ridgeland will be a defensive minded team as always and they will rely on this to get them into the playoffs. Germantown is another team that can’t be counted out with some young talent finding their way.

Division Breakdown:

Wayne County continues to reload with phenomenal athletes and can be the favorite right now. Laurel will always be a problem for opponents as long as Coach Price is there. They are strong and athletic and will get better as the year goes on. The battle of the Jones’ will be interesting to keep an eye on. Both are programs that are being turned around and are on the way up.

Division Breakdown:

This division is silently tough. It will not get the respect of other top loaded divisions but it is solid from top to bottom.  Forest Hill seems to be the top dog right now with some talented players coming back. Lafollete Bogan will be a really strong piece for Brookhaven. Wingfield will be paced by one of the best athletes in the state is Damarion Arrington. Natchez will be really solid and they have the manpower to knock any of these teams off any given night.

Division Breakdown:

Hattiesburg is going to be tough, tough, tough. These juniors have been grinding the last two years for Coach Watson and they will start to get the recognition this season. North Pike will try and answer with Mr Do Every Sport At A High Level, Alijah Martin. Pearl River Central should continue to improve on a great season last year. Picayune will be under new leadership this season. I’ll be watching closely to see what Coach Vianney and Marvun Arnold accomplish this season.

Division Breakdown:

Another hard division to figure out. Gautier boasts the best defense in the state by far and it’s not even close. Their offensive patience last season was unheard of. Stone would look to be the favorite off the bat with players bringing experience back from last seasons run to Jackson. Long Beach has the best younger team on the coast. Will they be able to insert themselves into the division title hunt or will next year be their year to dominate. West Harrison has some talented seniors and shooters that could light it up any given night.
