4A Preseason Preview

4A Preseason Preview

1-4A

Division Breakdown:

What a difference a year makes. Tishomingo County will be the most experienced team in the division, they have the best player in the division and they also host the division tournament. For you that don’t know, Tish County is way up and out there (very close to Tennessee and Alabama lines). It seems even far out there for most NE MS teams. This will give them a super huge advantage in the division tournament. That and two next level senior players. Ripley will be semi-rebuilding with one of the best young coaches in the state in Coach Adam Kirk. They will be in contention for the title. New Albany has tons of athletes finally making it up to the upper class ranks. They could be one of the best overall athletic teams out there. Corinth will be really young this season but Coach Greene has a knack for making me look really bad so keep an eye on them. Senatobia and Byhalia will both be under the direction of new coaches this season so they could both jump in and make some noise. Byhalia brings back some key experience, size and athleticism and they always play at a scrappy level. Senatobia has a rising player in Kavan Wooten to watch this season.

Division Breakdown:

I gotta go with a football school here. Darryl Wilson has a very talented team with some size at Fulton. Itawamba is very well rounded and can compete at just about every position on the court. Caledonia is coming out of nowhere as a dark horse team. They will be starting several next level players and can shock a lot of opponents this year. Cooper McClesky might be one of the most underrated and slept on players out there. Pontotoc will be under the direction of former Ashland Coach Rolley Tipler. Coach Tipler is no stranger to high level basketball and it won’t take him long to develop Pontotoc into a high level team with all of their young studs. Shannon was really scrappy last season and I fully expect Coach Brim to field the same team this year. A much improved Amory team will definitely be in the mix under Coach Brian Pearson and monster athlete Isaiah Thompson.

Division Breakdown:

I really don’t know what to make of 3-4A. I keep hearing that Rosa Fort is going to be super tough and then I hear Rosa Fort will be in rebuilding mode. Rosa Fort, what are you? Gentry can either be the division champ or runner up. They looked horrible over the summer but Coach Chico Potts will have them ready by division tournament time. Clarksdale will be in reloading mode and shouldn’t take them too long to get back to the Poo Bear days. Legendary Coach Anthony Carlyle takes over his home school at Yazoo City and is expected to take the team to the state championship, but he’s several years away from that. Expectations need to be lowered and let him build just like he did at Velma Jackson.

Division Breakdown:

Louisville is a team that i liked very much last year and I like them even more this year. Kosciusko is a team that’s been on the way up and I think they take that next step up again this year. Noxubee County will be a wild card team. Will they show up and be dominant or will they take some time to adjust this season. Leake Central will have the most dominant low post presence in the division and will battle for a playoff spot. New Hope will have to learn how to play without two D1 players around the basket this season. Will the small ball team be able to jump in and compete right away or will it take some time to figure it out?

Division Breakdown:

Quitman will have potential to be pretty good this year with 4 starters returning. They have size, skill and depth to make some noise in 4A. West Lauderdale will be really young but really talented. They have some talented size coming up so they will be a championship contender in a few years. Mendenhall will try and add to last years success and should be a very solid team. Northeast Jones and Northeast Luaderdale will be neck and neck for playoff spots. They will both be improved programs. Coach Steve Harber is entering his 45th season coaching this year and he will also be in the mix with Newton County after what was supposed to be a complete rebuild this year.

Division Breakdown:

All six teams in this division can possibly be in the top ten at some point this year but it really don’t matter. This is a two team division race and 4A is a two team state championship race. Raymond and Florence are both head and shoulders above everybody else in 4A. Raymond is loaded with talent, both young and old. They are very deep this year and probably have a better team than last years state championship team. Florence is a carbon copy of Raymond but they do have the bigger weapon in Alabama commit Jaylen Forbes. The ability of the younger guys at Florence to step up this year could be the difference in which team takes home the gold ball. The 3-6 spot can come down to any of the remaining teams. McComb is the “slept on” team right now. Coach Karshae Peterson comes in and has some size and athletes to play with. Lanier still has Earl Smith and that says enough right there. They made it to Jackson last year as a four seed. South Pike returns a top scorer in Demarcus Ellzey and Coach Hilton Harrell is no stranger to the big house. Richland has a chance to be very, very good this year and will be led by the most underrated player in the division, Isaiah Patrick.

Division Breakdown:

I had the opportunity to see Forrest County in the summer and they have a very good team coming up. I expect Ashton Campbell to make a major impact and jump onto the scene this year. Poplarville was blessed to get a transfer from Washington in 6-7 SG Dante Carroll. This will put Coach Bowen right in the mix with his already upcoming team. Greene County was a nice team to see last season and should be a playoff team this year with Jared Nicholson and a strong senior supporting cast. Sumrall and Lawrence County will put up big time fights for playoff spots this season too.

Keandre Booker is much improved from last season and will help lead Moss Point to the division title. Pass Christian has a pretty talented and athletic team that can push you to the limit. East Central will be another team to with the same capabilities. Bay will be a regrouping team but home court in the tournament will be an added plus. Vancleave will be rebuilding also this season. St. Stanislaus could be a really tough sleeper to watch out for. They are a very solid team that can’t be overlooked by any opponent.
