3A Preseason Preview

3A Preseason Preview

1-3A

Division Breakdown:

This division starts with Booneville. The Blue Devils have the ability to be as good as they want to be in the state. Coach Michael Smith has the hardest problem in that he has 15 possible starters. Most Coaches would die for this problem and I fully expect him to develop his team into a future top team in the state. Now, how far will they go in 3A this year? That depends on if the 15 starters can find individual roles for overall team success. If this happens, watch out 3A. North Pontotoc should be a control for the 2 spot with a great developing group of young players. Alcorn Central will be a year older and on their way to developing into what Coach Mike Lewis wants. The Belmont team always seems to play like a bunch of Guy Gardners and that can be trouble for opponents on any night. Mantachie has some solid talent coming back and Kossuth will be under new leadership this season. Kossuth has some sharp shooter and they always play country-strong.

Division Breakdown:

Who wants this division? Holly or North Panola? Both have a tremendous chance at winning it all. Holly Springs welcomes back Derek Fountain after venturing to Tennessee last year. The budding star has potential to be one of the better players in the state if he wants to be. The Hawks will have size, skill and experience that comes back after a heartbreaking state finals loss last season. I feel like they will be hungry enough to be the favorite this year. North Panola has some studs as well including a top 5 freshman in the state, DaeDae Hunter. North Panola should have 3 monsters in the starting lineup with Gross, Fenner and Jefferson. Coahoma and Palmer with both be quality teams. Water Valley could end up being a surprise team wit ha current unknown roster and new Coach. Independence will be in rebuilding mode this season after losing a lot of quality seniors last year.

Division Breakdown:

Yazoo County will be the surprise team in the state on the 3A level. Coach Rahim Lockhart brings his JUCO and D1 experience to go along with some highly skilled players. I really like Charleston this year as they have at least 3 three year starters, size and skill. Elzy and Ruleville will both look to continue success from last years teams. J.Z. is a team on the way up with younger players getting plenty of minutes last year. Sorry Shoes, Humphreys County should be in developing mode after several good years.

Division Breakdown:

I think this division will be down from last year but will be very evenly matched and fun to watch. Aberdeen has size and skill and also will have the Aberdome when the division tournament rolls around. Nettleton will be in the mix with their fun style of play. South Pontotoc has 5 year starter leading the way in Eddie Ivy. South also has some size and shooters so they can’t be overlooked. Choctaw County lost a huge piece in Akeem Kirkwood so who will step up and take the slack from the do-it-all guard. I’m sure Coach Gary Beals has some tricks up his sleeves to get his guys going. Houston was very young last year and have one year under the development stages. This might not be their year but I’m calling it now, watch out for them next year. Hatley will be developing some younger kids and will take the same past as Houston is taking to the top. This really could be anybody’s division.

Division Breakdown:

Choctaw Central seems to be the early favorite here with Coach Brent Farmer fielding a solid team every year. Kemper County has the best big in the division to go along with some very solid young players that got valuable experience last year. Forest would’ve been a favorite but they lost freak athlete Diwun Black to Florida. Black is athletic enough he could’ve played D1 in both football and basketball. Forest will look to gain lost production from Black from several different players. Southeast Lauderdale always has a defensive minded team with several offensive weapons. Morton has some young players that can make some noise this year too. Winona fell victim to the unfortunate consolidation with Montgomery County and was placed in 3A south instead of 2A north last season. Coach Presley Coleman went with the Trent Adair and Ingomar tactic as he started several 8th and 9th graders with his ability to see the big picture and is building for the future. Winona will be a team that makes serious noise a few years from now.

Division Breakdown:

Speaking of divisions not being as good? This was the toughest division in 3A last year with the state champ losing to two division opponents during the season. Sophomore Josh Lee and Velma Jackson look to be a very solid team this season. The post Garrison Wade Saints will try and defend their title with Rashad Bolden leading the team. Magee and McLaurin will both be much improved teams and could finish around the top of the division. Crystal Springs always has talent roaming so look for them to be at a high level again this season.

Wilkinson County might be the sneaky team to watch as they started and played a hefty number of freshmen last year some they have skill and experience this season.

Division Breakdown:

Possibly the hardest division in the state. This division is 5 super-strong. All 5 teams could make it to the second or third round of the playoffs also. Jefferson Davis County is the early favorite with plenty of depth and athleticism. Tylertown will be a dominant 3A team if everybody comes back from last years playoff team. Wesson is very good with several next level players manning the court. Seminary will be playing younger players……. with a major amount of skill and experience. Columbia is right there with Seminary in size and experience.
