Barnes Crossing Kia Game of the Night

Tuesday November 7, 2023
From Thrasher HS
Booneville, MS
(G) Hatley Lady Tigers 1-0 (2A Amory, MS) 60 Overtime
Thrasher Lady Rebels 0-1 (1A Booneville, MS) 56
Notes: The Lady Tigers have a strong core this season with multiple inside and outside players. The have a down low combo of Emma Wright (5-8 ’24 F Hatley 21 pts 9 reb 2 ast 1 blk 2 st) and Gracie Dillard (5-10 ’24 C Hatley 12 pts 2-2 ft 4 reb 2 ast 2 blk 3 st). Wright earned Player of the Game honors with her strong play down the stretch. Hatley also has very strong guard play in lefties Madison Whitt (5-4 ’24 G Hatley 9 pts 1 3’s 4 reb 7 ast 4 st) and Kelsey Coffey (5-5 ’27 G Hatley 9 pts 5 reb 1 ast 1 blk 4 st). Whitt and Coffey are the floor generals that run the offense. Whitt is a smart guard that can get her shot whenever she needs to. She should be a solid target for next level coaches this season. Coffey played with no fear and will be a next level prospect to keep an eye on as she develops over the next several years. Brookelyn Roberts (5-9 ’26 C Thrasher 12 pts (all in 1st half) 4-5 ft 4 reb 3 st) was well on her way to earning Player of the Game honors before she went down in the second quarter with a leg/foot injury that sent her to the ER. Roberts will be another great next level player to keep an eye on when she comes back from her injury. Makayla McDaniel (5-11 ’26 PF Thrasher 16 pts 6-8 ft 4 reb 1 ast 1 st) nailed the 2 point buzzer-beater to send the game into overtime. Her feet were barely past the line and it was almost the game winning basket instead of tying. Valerie Hester (5-7 ’26 PG Thrasher 12 pts 1 3’s 4 reb 4 ast 2 st), along with McDaniel, stepped up in the absence of Roberts.

Notes: Cayson Williams (6-0 ’24 G/F Hatley 17 pts 6 reb 1 ast 1 blk 5 st) stepped up with 7 big points in the 4th quarter to help Hatley get the win. The beast of a post player that I have watched the last several seasons has developed and worked on his game transforming into a bowling ball guard. He won’t go play next level basketball due to football but it was nice seeing him transform his game making him a more dangerous threat. Jarrett Mitchell (6-0 ’25 G Hatley 10 pts 1 3’s 11 reb 3 ast 2 st) was right there with Williams in the running for Player of the Game honors. Williams got the edge with his 4th quarter output. Mitchell was a very good surprise to see with his double-double. This guy can play. He is long and lanky and plays with poise and patience. He showed that he can score on all 3 levels when he wants to. He’s only listed at 6-0 but he looks more like he is 6-3 with his frame. He will be a must see player for next level coaches before he gets out of high school. Thrasher kept the Booneville hospital ER in business sending another player that way in the boys game too. Jonathan Grove (’24 C Thrasher 5 pts 1 reb 1 ast 2 st 1 charge taken) departed the game early with what appeared to be a broken finger. After Grove, the Rebels are junior led. Micah McDaniel (’25 PF Thrasher 10 pts 1 3’s 9 reb 1 ast 3 st) played like a full grown man with his near double-double.
