Barnes Crossing Kia Game of the Night

Tuesday November 14, 2023
From New Albany Middle School
New Albany, MS
(G) West Union Lady Eagles 2-2 (1A Myrtle, MS) 58
New Albany Lady Bulldogs 0-2 (4A New Albany, MS) 39
Notes: West Union was able to keep the Lady Bulldogs at bay with a solid victory. Zoey Wright (5-6 ’24 G West Union 20 pts 2 3’s 6 reb 6 ast 5 st) and Crissa Goodwin (5-7 ’24 G West Union 17 pts 7 reb 5 ast 5 st) both posted Player of the Game worthy stats but Wright just barely edged Goodwin out. This senior combo is a tough one-two punch for the Lady Eagles. Kylie Jourdan (5-10 ’25 G West Union 10 pts 3 reb 2 ast 1 blk 2 st) and Laina Corder (5-9 ’24 F West Union 9 pts 5 reb 3 ast 1 st) add height to the starting lineup. The whole starting lineup is well rounded and they play very well together. I could see this experienced team making some noise in the playoffs. New Albany got a solid performance from Gabrielle Starks (5-2 ’25 PG New Albany 13 pts 4 reb 1 ast 2 st) and I was impressed with ZaKathryn Cameron (5-7 ’25 F New Albany 11 pts 1 3’s 5 reb 1 st).

Notes: I showed up at New Albany expecting to see a good West Union team and a solid New Albany team. I was pleasantly shocked at the product I saw on the court. West Union is a good bit better than what I was expecting and New Albany is really, really good. Both of these teams have the potential to make deep playoff runs including trips to the Big House. We all know that brackets determine exactly how far they make it but both of these teams have solid shots at playing in Jackson this season.
New Albany is a very well rounded and deep team. Senior Kylan Lindsey (6-3 ’24 G/F New Albany 17 pts 5-6 ft 6 reb 2 ast 2 st) looked really good in this game. He is a shifty guard that plays bigger than his 6-3 frame. Dee Johnson (5-9 ’24 G New Albany 18 pts 4 3’s 4-4 ft 3 reb 1 st 2 charges taken) took advantage of the open trey balls. Emanuel Tucker (6-6 ’26 F/C New Albany 11 pts 9 reb 1 ast) is a beast down low and Issac Gilbert (6-5 ’25 F/C New Albany 8 pts 8 reb (5 in 4th qtr) 1 blk 1 st) provides size and athleticism. The rusty quarterback, Braden Shettles (6-2 ’26 G New Albany 15 pts 2 3’s 3-4 ft 2 reb 2 ast 2 blk), came off the bench but will surely get plugged into the starting lineup soon. New Albany is a solid nine player deep team that can play with multiple lineups and styles.
West Union rolled out three seniors, a sophomore and a freshman with the starting rotation. Benjamin Carter (5-11 ’24 G West Union 21 pts 4 3’s 1-1 ft 3 reb 3 ast 1 st 1 charge taken) took advantage of his open looks that his teammates created for him to post solid numbers for the Eagles. Jon Grey Morrisson (6-6 ’26 F West Union 10 pts 7 reb 4 ast 2 st) did his thing with the inside out game. Cole Morris Willard (5-11 G 14 pts 1 3’s 5-6 ft 6 reb 3 ast 1 st) was the Eagle that flew the highest. His ability to handle and get to the rack was on full display. I’ve watched him play several times and I’ve heard about his ability to play at that level and he put it on full display against the Bulldogs. I have gained much respect for him after this game. Carson Conlee (5-10 ’27 G West Union 12 pts 7 reb 3 ast) will be a stud down the road for West Union. They have a very talented freshman group led by this very controlled guard. He’s going to have some bumps this year while learning on the fly but it will help him when the playoffs arrive.
Next level Coaches need to see both of these teams this year. Both have several next level quality players.
