Barnes Crossing Kia Event of the Day

Booneville Thanksgiving Classic
Tuesday November 21, 2023
From Booneville HS
Booneville, MS
(G) Biggersville Lady Lions 4-3 (1A Corinth, MS) 67
Corinth Lady Warriors 0-6 (5A Corinth, MS) 36
Notes: Biggersville has gone into full rebuild mode without a senior on the team. The Player of the Game honor was a very close contest between Lainey Jackson Little (5-4 ’26 G Biggersville 21 pts 5 3’s 3 reb 1 ast) and Jaylee Stafford (5-9 ’25 F Biggersville 9 pts 5-7 ft 7 reb 1 ast 1 blk 4 st 1 charge taken). Little barely edged Stafford out for the honor. Little is a high level shooter. She fell just a little short with her shooting percentage of her Dad, Coach Cliff Little.

(G) Kossuth Lady Aggies 5-2 (3A Kossuth, MS) 69
Saltillo Lady Tigers 1-5 (6A Saltillo, MS) 33
Notes: This Kossuth team is so fun to watch. They connected on 12 three’s during the contest and should be able tp make a deep run in the playoffs. Alana Lewis (5-5 ’27 G Kossuth 20 pts 1 3’s 2-4 ft 4 reb 3 ast 3 st) has emerged as an early season team leader for the Lady Aggies. She can play. She showed that she can score on all levels and will definitely be a next level player to keep an eye on. Eva Null (5-7 ’24 PG Kossuth 14 pts 4 3’s 8 reb 2 ast 1 blk 2 st), Hadley James (5-6 ’24 SG Kossuth 11 pts 1 3’s 5 reb 3 ast 3 st) and Macadyn Holley (5-4 ’24 G Kossuth 15 pts 3 3’s 1 reb 2 ast 3 st) provided plenty of scoring for Coach Hodum.
Saltillo started the game out slow but picked up their play as the game went along. Cella Kay Dye (5-7 ’25 G Saltillo 15 pts 3 3’s 7 reb 2 ast 1 st) played solid for the Lady Tigers.

(G) Booneville Lady Blue Devils 6-0 (3A Booneville, MS) 66
Canton Lady Tigers 2-1 (5A Canton, MS) 45
Notes: The score didn’t indicate how much fun this game was. It was billed as the match-up of the highly ranked bigs and they did not disappoint. Sa’Niyah Cook (6-3 ’25 C Booneville 16 pts 10 reb 5 ast 1 blk 6 st) earned the Player of the Game title with her team winning the battle. She provided a big double-double with steals and assists to go along with them. Speaking of assists. This Booneville team passes the ball so well and scores easily off of open shots. Ava Kate Smith (5-8 ’25 G Booneville 13 pts 1 3’s 6 reb 9 ast 1 st) has hit the next level with her play. She picked the Canton defense apart with her offensive play. She should now be a target for next level Coaches.
Shamira Morton (6-2 ’26 F Canton 12 pts 7 reb 1 ast 7 blk 1 st) was really impressive for Canton. She appeared to be the best player on the court to me. Morton is long and she protected the basket very well. She is a star in the making. I really can’t wait to see where she ends up at the end of her high school career.
I have a side note for this game that wasn’t related to the game but more to life. Kellan Johnson (5-8 ’27 G Booneville 8 pts 2 3’s 4 reb 1 ast 2 st) caught my eye as the day went along. Booneville played in the middle of the day but she was one of the players that hung around and watched every single game. She could be seen talking with several different coaches about the games that were going on. At the end of the Classic she was walking in the stands picking up trash. This really got my attention of the character that she has instilled in her. About twenty-five years ago I worked with her Dad, Coach Chip Johnson, and he was a very influential worker at the company we worked at. He was a trainer and a leader for incoming employees. All of the Johnson girls are very impressive on the court and off but this really stood out to me.

(B) Canton Tigers 3-0 (5A Canton, MS) 70
Booneville Blue Devils 4-1 (3A Booneville, MS) 49
Notes: This game really surprised me here. I was singing the “Booneville is the best team in the state” praises all preseason. Canton wasted no time making me look really bad with that praise. This game was looked at as the battle of the high major junior prospects as well. Jamarion Fleming (6-8 ’25 F/C Canton 18 pts 12 reb 3 ast 1 blk) easily won this battle with his double-double. He made getting baskets in the paint really hard for Booneville. Baby J has really developed into the prospect I thought he could be at an early age. DeAndre Lewis (6-4 ’24 G Canton 18 pts 6 reb 2 ast 1 st) impressed me for the Tigers. He is a next level guard that showed he has a very well rounded game. He didn’t have any problem getting to his spots. He really had the Booneville guards intimidated with his size. Zakirius Gilkey (5-10 ’24 G Canton 18 pts 3-4 ft 5 3’s 3 ast 3 st) knocked down the long ball and had a big day for Canton as well.
Alec Nunley (6-3 ’24 G Booneville 10 pts 5 reb 1 ast) was the only Blue Devil to have a good start to the game. He came out and played with no fear getting to the basket against the bigger foes. Kedrick Simmons (6-7 ’25 G Booneville 13 pts 1 3’s 4-5 ft 2 reb 2 ast 3 blk) finally showed up in the third quarter showing he can dominate whenever he wants to. He showed that he can score on all levels but it was a little too late for Booneville. I can’t wait to see how Booneville recovers this weekend against Alabama power Mountain Brook at the Lighthouse Classic.

(G) Alcorn Central Lady Bears 6-1 (3A Glen, MS) 55
Shannon Lady Red Raiders 3-2 (4A Shannon, MS) 49
Notes: This game had me so confused. I’m really not sure how good either of these teams are. I have heard how great Alcorn Central is and I don’t think I got to see it because Shannon turned this game crazy and chaotic. Alcorn Central survived the crazy tempo to get the win. Central has a lot of size down low that they can rotate out. Allie Kirkland (6-0 ’24 C Alcorn Central 16 pts 2-2 ft 8 reb 3 ast 1 blk 1 st) was the leader on this day with her play. Branna Quinn (6-2 ’26 G/F Alcorn Central 8 pts 6-6 ft 6 reb 3 ast 1 st) and Emma Barnett (5-11 ’25 C Alcorn Central 12 pts 4 reb 1 ast) were both solid down low.
Coach Shumpert made the game crazy with his offensive and defensive chaos. I’m still not sure if they are good or what happened. Kenyotia Bowers (5-7 ’24 G Shannon 14 pts 9 reb 1 ast 6 st) and Taleiah Brown (5-11 ’24 F Shannon 12 pts 10 reb 1 ast 2 blk) both played very well for Shannon in the loss.

Notes: Jordan Medcalf (’25 G/F Shannon 24 pts 3 3’s 7-8 ft 8 reb 1 st) locked the game down in the end with a fee-throw on his way earning Player of the Game honors. Jeremiah Gardner (6-0 ’25 G Shannon 18 pts 6 reb 2 ast) and Tristen Jones (6-0 ’24 F Shannon 10 pts 6 reb 2 ast 2 blk 1 st) had very solid games to help Coach brim get the W.
Wilson McDonald (6-2 ’26 G Alcorn Central 14 pts 2 3’s 7 reb 3 ast 1 blk 3 st) continued to impress for Alcorn Central.

Belmont Cardinals 4-1 (3A Belmont, MS) 47
Notes: Coach Mitch Howell has transformed his style to fit his weapons at Saltillo. And he has several weapons that can fire the ball up. Gunner Wesson (6-2 ’24 G Saltillo 24 pts (11 in 4th qtr) 1 3’s 9-12 ft 4 reb 1 ast 1 st) edged Cayden Howell (6-3 ’24 G Saltillo 11 pts 2 3’s 6 reb 7 ast 3 st 2 charges taken) for Player of the Game with his 4th quarter burst as Howell had to exit due to fouling out. Howell could’ve messed around and got a triple-double. Beacone Stewart (5-11 ’24 G Saltillo 14 pts 2 3’s 9 reb 1 st) got my attention with his rebounding from the guard spot. Jack Adams (6-0 ’25 G Saltillo 11 pts 2 3’s 3 reb 5 st) another bomber for Coach Howell.
As good as Gunner and Cayden looked as far as next level prospects, Khalil Luster (6-5 ’28 F Belmont 18 pts 2 3’s 5 reb 1 ast 2 blk) was the biggest prospect on the floor. Luster played up on the high school level as an eigth grader and was a head taller than any other player on the court. Luster is playing the post for now but he can step out and play multiple positions on the court. The smooth lefty knocked a couple long balls down and was killing it in the warm-ups nailing them. He can score on all levels and is a solid passer for his age. He is in the running for the top players in his class and that is a very deep and talented group. I can’t wait to watch him play the next FIVE years. Ty Ramsey (6-3 ’24 G Belmont 6 pts 2-2 ft 9 reb 2 ast 2 blk 3 st) was another player that impressed me for Belmont.
