The 10th Annual Lighthouse Classic

Friday November 24, 2023

From Corinth HS

Corinth, MS

(B) Central Wildcats 1-1 (4A Florence, AL) 44

Kossuth Aggies 0-1 (3A Kossuth, MS) 42

Notes: The first game of the 10th Annual Lighthouse Classic got us off to the right start as it foreshadowed what was yet to come over the weekend. This first game was decided by a game winning shot and defensive stop. Cole Wilcoxson (6-2 ’26 G Central 7 pts 1 3’s 2 reb 4 ast 1 st) delivered a bullet pass to Jackson Brewer (6-3 ’25 F/C Central 14 pts 6-7 fg 2-2 ft 4 reb 1 st) and he was able to connect on the go ahead basket down low for the win. Wilcoxson was then able to apply the defensive pressure on the other end of the court to help get the win. Brody Cole (6-4 ’25 F/C Central 16 pts 6-7 ft 11 reb 2 ast 2 blk 2 st) earned MVP honors with his impressive play and double-double.

Kossuth got a really good showing from Cade Essary (5-11 ’26 F Kossuth 15 pts 6-7 fg 2 3’s 3 reb 1 ast). Essary displayed his ability to finish around the basket and knock down the long balls too. Ethan Killough (6-0 ’28 G Kossuth 7 pts 2 3’s 2 ast) came off the bench and looked very solid for an 8th grader. Aiden McCalmon (5-5 ’29 G Kossuth) became the first ever 7th grader to play in the Lighthouse Classic. He was able to play a couple minutes and will be a top player in his class to keep an eye on as he develops the next several years.

Below is the video of the Brewer game winner.

Notes: Moravian Prep showed up bombing 3’s and it didn’t take them long to get the big lead. They set a Lighthouse Classic record with 24 3’s made. Abu Yarmah (6-7 ’25 F Moravian Prep 18 pts 7-10 fg 4-6 3’s 9 reb 2 ast 1 st) and Eli Ellis (6-1 ’25 PG Moravian Prep 18 pts 8-14 fg 1 3’s 4 reb 7 ast 1 st) had big games in the win. (B) Bartlett Panthers 5-0 (4A Bartlett, TN) 66

Germantown Mavericks 4-2 (7A Madison, MS) 32

Notes: Germantown had the hard task of trying to take down the best team in Tennessee. That task didn’t work out too well as Bartlett got the win in convincing fashion. The combo of R’Chaun King (6-7 ’24 F Bartlett 11 pts 5-9 fg 1-1 ft 13 reb (11 offensive) 3 ast 3 st) and Christian Alston (6-5 ’24 G/F Bartlett 22 pts 4-7 3’s 3 reb 1 ast 2 st) were hard to handle. This Bartlett team has size, speed, depth and are just flat out good. I fully expect them to walk away with a championship this season.

For Germantown, Joseph Anthony (6-1 ’26 G Germantown 15 pts 4-6 fg 7-7 ft 1 ast 1 blk 2 st) was a pleasant surprise to find out about. The young guard played very well against the powerhouse guards from Bartlett.

St. Thomas More Cougars 1-1 (4A Lafayette, LA) 44

Notes: This is one of the games that I had circled on day 1 as “must see” and it lived up to the hype. Raymond was able to come away with the win on two defensive stops. Mekhi Strong (6-4 ’24 G Raymond 11 pts 3-4 ft 8 reb 2 ast) stole the ball and connected on the go ahead dunk with 22 seconds to go in the game. Chris Stephens (6-3 ’24 G Raymond 2 pts 2 reb 4 ast 2 blk 1 st) provided a huge block with seconds remaining to lock the win down. Keymarius Lewis (5-10 ’24 G Raymond 16 pts 4 3’s 2 reb 2 ast 2 st) earned MVP with his offensive play when he went on a 9 point scoring run earlier in the game. Michael Mouton (6-5 ’24 G St. Thomas More 17 pts 2-2 3’s 5-5 ft 1 reb 4 ast 1 st) had a solid game for the Cougars.

(B) Yazoo City Indians 6-0 (5A Yazoo City, MS) 45

Pinson Valley Indians 7-1 (6A Pinson, AL) 43

Notes: This is the other Friday game I had circled as the other “must see.” It also lived up to the hype. Yazoo City won out with the defensive style. Damarion Winston (6-2 ’24 G Yazoo City 19 pts 2 3’s 3-4 ft 1 reb 2 ast 2 st) dropped nearly half of his teams’ points with his ISO game. Clyde Walters (6-7 ’26 G Pinson Valley 9 pts 6 reb 3 ast) and Quay Lynch (5-9 ’26 PG Pinson Valley 15 pts 3 3’s 4 reb 2 ast) both chipped in solid games for Pinson Valley. Yazoo City is off to an impressive start and appears to be sitting in the #1 overall spot in the state so far. Can Coach Carlyle get another Gold Ball in his 4th classification????
