North Pontotoc at Blue Mountain Recap 12-5-2023

Barnes Crossing Kia Game of the Night

Monday December 4, 2023

From Blue Mountain High School

Blue Mounatin, MS

(G) Blue Mountain Lady Cougars  10-0 (#1 1A Blue Mountain, MS) 52

North Pontotoc Lady Vikings 8-2 (#6 4A Ecru, MS) 38

Notes: Blue Mountain jumped out to an early lead and was able to hold on for the victory. North Pontotoc cut the lead to six in the fourth quarter but Blue Mountain had another run in them to get the win. A big note from this game is that the Lady Cougars just went 10-0 with only six players on the team. Keyauna Foote (6-0 ’24 G Blue Mountain 16 pts 2 3’s 4 reb 6 ast 2 blk 6 st) had a big game in the win. Foote is a lock for next level programs and she should be getting a lot of interest and offers. She looked really good in the pick and rolls mixing it up with jumpers and great passes to the roller. Ahkeelah Lipsey (5-11 ’24 PF Blue Mountain 10 pts 7 reb 2 ast 1 st) took advantage of being the roller and connected on some hard baskets. A’rare Foote (5-5 ’24 PG Blue Mountain 16 pts 2 reb 5 st) used her speed on the defensive end to get some steals and easy baskets.

The Keyauna Foote and Kiara Shelly (5-8 ’24 F North Pontotoc 3 pts 7 reb 1 ast) match-up was the big draw for me in this one. Foote got the better of Shelly this time with Shelly having an off night. But don’t sleep on Shelly. She is freakishly athletic and should be a steal for next level Coaches. The big surprise for me with the Lady Vikings was Emma Burks (5-3 ’25 PG North Pontotoc 12 pts 3 reb 3 ast 2 st). She is sneaky good at running the point with her ability to drive and dish. She could’ve easily had double digit assists if the baskets would’ve fallen for the Lady Vikings. Envi Judon (5-9 ’24 C North Pontotoc 11 pts 5-6 ft 7 reb 2 blk) took advantage of Foote guarding Shelly and was on the receiving end of the drive and dishes from Burks. She played very solidly at the post spot for North Pontotoc.

Notes: I figured this was going to be a very evenly matched game but I didn’t realize it was going to be as exciting as it was. North Pontotoc outscored Blue Mountain 22-2 in the final quarter to get the seven point win. They turned the pressure up in the fourth quarter and came away with eleven steals in the final frame. The Player of the Game was a close race between DeAnthony Slaughter (5-10 ’26 PG North Pontotoc 18 pts 1 3’s 3-4 ft 9 reb 3 blk 3 st) and Brayden Brown (6-0 ’25 SF North Pontotoc 15 pts (9 in 4th qtr) 3-4 ft 6 reb 2 ast 2 blk 2 st 2 charges taken). Slaughter edged Brown out with his defensive play. His 3 blocks that he had were timely and impressive. Brown had a big fourth quarter scoring nine points. SirJustin Marshall (6-0 ’24 G/F North Pontotoc 4 pts 4 reb 4 st, 3 in 4th qtr) was big in the final frame with his defensive pressure on Javari Hall (6-6 ’24 F Blue Mountain 19 pts 3-3 ft 8 reb 1 ast 2 blk 1 st). He guarded Hall tightly and could’ve earned Player of the Game with that defensive effort.

As for Hall, it felt like North did a great job of shutting him down in this game and then you look back at it and he still had 19 points. He is a must see for next level Coaches needing a 6-6 stretch four. He can score around the basket and has the ability to knock down 15-18 foot jumpers. He can score off the drive and has a variety of turn-around jumpers in his bag. Chance Venson (5-9 ’26 G Blue Mountain 10 pts 3 3’s 6 reb 2 ast 5 st 1 charge taken) is another one to keep an eye on at the Mountain as he develops over the next couple years. He has extra long range on his three ball.
