Houlka at East Union Recap 12-5-2023

Barnes Crossing Kia Game of the Night

Tuesday December 5, 2023

From East Union High School

Blue Springs, MS

(G) East Union Lady Urchins  6-2 (#6 2A Blue Springs, MS) 65

Houlka Lady Wildcats 0-9 (#36 1A Houlka, MS) 6

Notes: East Union took advantage of some stingy defense to get the big win. Josie Mae Bell (5-7 ’26 G East Union 11 pts 1 3’s 5 reb 2 ast 4 st), Caroline Sherwood (5-3 ’26 PG East Union 9 pts 3 reb 6 ast 2 st) and Adison Russell (5-6 ’27 G East Union 10 pts 1 3’s 4 reb 2 ast 4 st) were in the running for Player of the Game honors with Bell barely edging them out. Carrlee Collins (5-11 ’24 C East Union 5 pts 4 reb 1 ast 1 blk 2 st) caught my eye with her length and play down low. Marlee Clayton (5-5 ’28 G East Union 13 pts 1 3’s 1 reb 2 st) was the leading scorer for the Lady Urchins.

Notes: I had a feeling that this boys game was going to be a great game and I was right. It was a back and forth battle that came down to the wire. Nehemiah Flemmings (5-11 ’24 G Houlka 22 pts 2 3’s 6-7 ft 3 reb 1 ast 4 st) was clutch down the stretch for the Wildcats. He scored the final 5 points of the game for Houlka by draining a three and then connecting on two free-throws. Neal Moore (6-2 ’24 F Houlka 8 pts 12 reb 3 blk 1 st) and Elijah Foster (6-2 ’25 C Houlka 10 pts 2-2 ft 12 reb 1 ast 2 blk 1 st) are two really good pieces around the paint for Houlka. They erased shots on the defensive end and dominated the boards on both ends. Houlka has really good shooters in Flemmings and Hayes Paden (6-1 ’24 G Houlka 12 pts 2 3’s 2 reb 2 ast 2 st). Elijah Kilpatrick (5-11 ’24 G Houlka 11 pts 1-1 ft 2 reb 5 ast) is another athletic guard that can score on multiple levels. Houlka is way better than what I was expecting after losing several key seniors last year. I can see this team making some big moves in the playoffs.

Tristan Baldwyn (5-11 ’25 G/F East Union 23 pts (9 in 4th qtr) 6 reb 2 ast 2 st 1 charge taken) was dominant for the Urchins. When he got the ball near the baseline he wasn’t going to be stopped. He easily dropped a game high 23 with nine coming in the fourth quarter. Clayton Russell (5-9 ’25 G East Union 10 pts 2 3’s 3 reb 5 ast 4 st) was another player that impressed me with his all around play. East Union is a very solid team and they will be interesting to keep an eye on when they hit division play.
