Saturday January 18, 2025

From New Albany Middle School

New Albany, MS

Stats are unofficial and were kept by me. I did the best I could but the action was fast at this event so I missed a good bit while writing and taking pictures.

(G) Oxford Lady Chargers 17-5 #42 (7A #10 Oxford, MS) 57

Walnut Lady Wildcats 18-2 #27 (2A #2 Walnut, MS) 52

Notes: This game was way better than anticipated. Oxford is really good and I could see this team getting some surprise wins in the playoffs. I knew about the very athletic Zoe Metcalf (5-8 ’25 G Oxford) already but was caught off guard by Sidney Glahn (5-8 ’26 G Oxford). The Georgia transfer can play. Scouts, next level coaches and any basketball minds need to know about her sooner than later. CC Frierson (5-8 ’25 F Oxford) came off the bench to provide an extra scoring punch.

Oxford was able to get up right at or over the twenty point mark before Walnut started fighting back. This Walnut team will make a deep run in the playoffs. And when I say deep it may even be 220 miles deep depending on the bracket.

(G) Lauderdale County Lady Tigers 19-1 #13 (3A #2 Rogersville, AL) 61

Ingomar Lady Falcons 21-2 #16 (2A #1 New Albany, MS) 58

Notes: Ingomar got the opportunity to play basically Ingomar. Lauderdale county was about the closest team I’ve seen this season to being, other than Ingomar, your typical Ingomar team. They were very fundamental with multiple options to come at you with. They are well rounded with a superstar in the bag to use if needed. They play really good defense and shoot at a high level after moving the ball around until they find the right shot. Shila Marks (5-7 ’25 G Lauderdale County) is that superstar. She blew me away with her triple-threat positioning and her ability to get any shot she wanted. She used a jab step and fade away to get what she made look like easy baskets. She is going to Shelton State and I will say that they got an absolute steal. She should easily be going D1.

There is no need for the Lady Falcon fans to panic. Lauderdale County is really good. This was two teams that should end the season with gold balls.

(G) Collierville Lady Dragons 19-4 #54 (4A #19 Collierville, TN) 47

Pontotoc Lady Warriors 19-5 #17 (5A #2 Pontotoc, MS) 46

Notes: This game was sloppy and ugly and I’m pretty sure that is the way Collierville wanted it. They didn’t want Pontotoc to flex the finesse so they uglied it up with some strong defense down low. Jekhyra Rodgers (5-8 ’26 PG Collierville) earned Player of the Game honors by only scoring 4 points but she stuffed the stats in all other categories. Ehi Aigbomian (6-2 ’27 C Collierville) is an interesting prospect to keep an eye on across the northern border.

(G) Tupelo Lady Golden Wave 19-3 #4 (7A #2 Tupelo, MS) 76

Tishomingo County Lady Braves 19-1 #8 (4A #2 Iuka, MS) 62

Notes: Tupelo jumped out to the big lead and was able to keep it on cruise control to keep the Lady Braves at a short distance. Jade Rucker (6-0 ’25 G Tupelo) was welcomed back off the bench to a healthy applause from the Wave faithful. Nadia Norfleet (5-6 ’25 PG Tupelo) dropped 25 points on the way to being Player of the Game. Olivia Smith (’26 G Tupelo) looked really good with her near double-double.

This was a loss that Tishomingo needed going down the home stretch. They still looked good in the loss but they just ran into a team that had hunger in their eyes. Tupelo will not lose a game in state if they continue to play like this.

(G) Belmont Lady Cardinals 18-3 #23 (3A #2 Belmont, MS) 68

Biggersville Lady Lions 17-4 #52 (1A #1 Corinth, MS) 45

Notes: Biggersville had the challenge of facing Belmont coming off a division loss to Booneville and Belmont is almost getting back to full speed. They have speed, size and shooters. They are working on getting back to a complete team and will be dangerous when they do.

Biggersville, keep your head up. There is not much you can do with a team like this. You will not see a team like Belmont in 1A.
