January 10-12 Prentiss County Tournament @ Baldwyn

January 28 Hot Bed Classic @ New Albany

What to look for this year:

The Bearcats return two starters from a 27-5 team that made its way to the state semifinals. Coming back to direct the team will be the ankle breaking 5-10 2017 PG C.J. McGaha. The lightning quick guard should really start to get college looks this season with his ability to always get the ball to the open man. He has also worked on his offensive game over the summer and can score when needed. The leading scorer and rebounder returns in 6-2 2017 G/F Felix Hayes. Hayes plays like a 6-8 guy trapped in a 6-2 athletic and muscular body. Hayes has developed an extremely long outside game to go with his presence above the rim. 6-3 2018 G Michael Crump possibly has the most potential with his length on the defensive side of the ball and his ability to score from outside on offense. Crump also has a killer first step to go with his handles and he can get to the rack whenever he needs to. 6-3 2019 G/F Calvin “Smurf” Harris is the most athletic player on the Bearcat team and will be a match up issue for a lot of players he goes against. This Baldwyn team will be deeper than teams in years past. 5-10 2017 SG Ovurton “Obie” Gates will contribute as a shooter on the offensive end. 5-10 2018 G Dequantrae “Money” Welch and 5-8 2018 G Shamaur Agnew will give added depth at the point guard spots, especially on the defensive end. 6-2 2019 C D’Mondrea “Mon” Doss will provide back up down low. 5-10 2019 G Josh Hester and 5-10 2019 G Ethan Carmichael will contribute as the season goes along. 2020 guard Taye Barnett is very athletic on both ends of the floor and always finds his way to the ball. Keep an eye on his as this year progresses. With all the depth, Coach Goolsby will have his team putting constant pressure on the ball and try to force tough shots on the defensive end. Offensively, the first year Coach will have his guys getting up the court fast trying to score in transition. This Bearcat team will be a new and different team from years past. Keep an eye on them to see if they can gel together with a new Coach, new style and newer players. If they can, they will be a force to deal with down the stretch.

Byers Lions

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 200

Players to watch for:

Exavier Martin 6-2 2017 PF

Michael Mabon 5-8 2018 PG

Tournaments, classics and events:

December 3 Walnut Classic

December 28-30 Marshall Academy Holiday Tournament

What to look for this year:

The Lions enter this season after one year with Coach Frenzel. The Cincinnati native brought his style of Coaching to North MS and it took a little while for Byers to get use to it. From what I saw during the summer, they have finally bought in. They played a very hard nosed, fast paced defense that will give the regular fan a headache watching. Leading his fast paced offense will be 5-8 2018 PG Michael Mabon. The lightning quick guard can get to the basket or create easily for others. That is good news for 6-2 2017 PF Exavier Martin. Martin will benefit from the easy baskets and will be able to play all out on defense. Coach Frenzel thinks he has a battle tested team that will be able to surprise some people. I agree with him if they continue to play like they did over the summer.

East Union Urchins

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 196

January 28 Hot Bed Classic @ New Albany

What to look for this year:

East Union will be a much improved ball club this year. 6-3 2017 G/F Ty McDonald will be the key for this team. He should also see a rise in his recruitment as the season goes along. 2018 Bo Nobles will provide some help for Ty. Coach McDonald will have his guys ready going down the stretch.

December 30 Rumble on the River @ ICC

January 13-14 Union County Tourament @ West Union

What to look for this year:

The Falcons will be a team with experience but still growing. The offense will be powered by the 2018 duo of 6-2 2018 F Kelton Hall and 6-1 2018 SG Jay Pickens. Hall is one of the best long range shooters around. He can step out and shoot a high percentage from NBA range. Pickens can knock down the three or can get to the rack and get shots off after contact. 5-4 2019 PG Trent Bradley will provide a valuable ball handling skill and control the tempo of the game. Coach Ashley thinks that Pickens and Hall have to be the focal point on offense. That should come easy for the two automatic scorers. Look for Ingomar to make a huge run this season if they can get big time defensive contributions from Hall and Pickens. The Falcons could also make the jump and claim the division title with leadership and contributions from senior players.

Instead of doing a Bulldog walk, Coach Jones hopes the Cardinals have the experience this season to be able to walk into the playoffs. He stated, “I’m looking forward to this season and I think we have the experience and talent to do well in our division and move on into the playoffs.”

What to look for this year:

Coach Thomas fell one game short last season of the prize. He will look to get back this year with his Tigers. 6-3 2017 G/F Malik Gilliam will be one of the main focal points of the offense. Gilliam should see a big rise in his recruitment this year. 6-4 2018 G/F Cornelius Holly is a high flyer that can score with the best of them. 5-3 2018 PG Lovorius Tenner will help control the tempo of the game. Coach Thomas will have his guys in the mix of 2A again.

The Red Panthers will have a very deep and athletic team this year. Leadership will come from 6-3 2017 G Jaylin McCray, 6-4 2017 F/C Effernee Taylor and 6-4 2017 C Brandon Hornburger. Coahoma County has great team size across the board. 2018’s  6-4 G/F Keion Crosby and 6-4 F Derrick Moore Jr will assist the seniors with athletic ability and size. 6-1 2019 G/F Alshun Ross and 6-4 2019 G/F Markevius Phillips will make good strides this year to help the elder players. Coach Moore described, “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” You can surely expect his team to be working hard all season and they should be able to make the trip to Jackson this year.

J.Z. George Jaguars

2015-16 MS MaxPreps rank: 198

Tournaments, classics and events:

What to look for this year:

Blake Bland 6-2 2018 SG

Tournaments, classics and events:

December 28-30 Battle at the Barn @ Lewisburg

What to look for this year:

The Mustangs had a 13-10 season last year. 13-10? Well that’s ok I guess? No. That’s impressive, the first winning season for boys basketball EVER at Strayhorn. That is also in a division with the 2 teams that played for the 2A title. This year, Coach Suddoth will look to build on that success and grow as a team. 5-9 2019 PG Deonta Jones will return as a co-leading scorer from last years team. He averaged 13 ppg. The play maker has one of the smoothest shots you will ever see. The other co-leading scorer returns, 6-5 2018 C Terry Coleman Jr. His 6-10 wingspan suggest that he will continue to grow and be an even more dominant post player. He will contribute greatly on the offensive and defensive ends of the court with his advanced fundamental skills. Two other 2018’s will be in the mix this year too. 6-2 G Cameron Crump is an explosive guard that can get to the basket and attack the rim. He will contribute on both ends as well. 6-2 SG Blake Bland continues to improve and he gives the Mustangs another good shooter from outside. “I like to think of our team as a gritty bunch, not scared to take a charge or dive into the bleachers to grab a loose ball.” said Coach Suddoth. That style of play with growing talent will give them a chance in every game they play.

The Choctaws return 2 starters off of last years undefeated championship team. Returning will be 5-11 2017 G Tyler Berryhill. His leadership will be used to go along with the play of 6-4 2017 F Dan Locke IV. Locke has the skill and athletic ability to play inside or stretch the court. Then you have 6-4 2017 F/C Eli Powell. He lead Hernando, a 5A team, last season in scoring at nearly 20 ppg. Other 2017’s that will contribute heavy minutes are 6-0 2017 F Ken Speight, 5-9 2017 G LaCedric Hines and 6-0 2017 G Nathan Hill. 6-2 2018 G/F Milton McGee Jr and 6-1 2020 G/F Malique McGee will also get heavy minutes to contribute this season. Coach Berryhill said, “This team has developed an identity with a strong work ethic that will give us the best opportunity to make its own run.” He has his guys striving to get better every day. Sure an undefeated season with a trophy is great but Coach Berryhill is not satisfied with just one season, it’s all part of the process and he seems to have the Choctaws fully committed.
