Bay Springs Alfa Insurance Shootout

Bay Springs Alfa Insurance Shootout Notes

Thanks to Mr Ben Cole III of Alfa Insurance and to Coach Mackey for sponsoring this event.

Newton

Newton: this team is staying at the top of 2A with an even brighter future ahead. Newton has 2 of the most talented freshmen that I have seen in 2A this year.

Isaiah “Lil Nut” Edwards Sr PG: Great ball handler. Very quick defensively. Great passer wit ha quick jump shot.

Yorel Phillips 6-5 Fr F/C: 12 pts, 1 3’s. Big body athlete with raw potential. Great form on his shot. He was playing his 2nd game back from a knee injury.

Jalon Shephard 6-5 Fr F/C: 6 pts. A spitting image of Phillips. Big body athlete with raw potential. Great form on his shot. Both can play facing the basket or with their back to the basket.

Magee

Magee: 9-7 team? This is the best 9-7 team in 3A. Coach Lockhart is doing an amazing job with this team. I’m extremely impressed with his coaching ability. He is one of the hidden gems in the state. This is a team that could surprise some folks and make a run in the 3A playoffs.

Brandon Mills 6-9 Jr F/C: 24 pts including game winning put back basket at the buzzer, 2-3 ft, a lot of rebounds. This is a top 5 Jr in the state. Probably the most talented big man in the state. Long lanky body. Can handle the ball for a big man. He has a 15 foot jump shot. Great passer! Great passer! Great passer! Most likely the best passing big man I have ever seen. I’m not a big baseball guy but a contributor to my site that keeps up with baseball said he has to be a pitcher, and most likely a really good one. He would get the rebound and hit a full court pass on the money. Great hands around the basket. He is D1 for sure and for some reason nobody knows about him.

Bryson Mills 6-3 So G: 17 pts, 2-2 ft. Very athletic player that will blossom into a force. Top notched defensive player. Good jump shot.

Cortez Hubbard 5-8 Jr G: 16 pts, 3 3’s, 3-3 ft, 14 pts in 2nd half come back. Very stocky built guard. Great shooter. Pure shot with great form.

Heidelberg

Heidelberg: Long athletic team. Very deep and shoots good. They crash the boards well and play a high pressured defense.

Rondarius Arrington 6-2 Sr G: 15 pts, 3 3’s, 4-4 ft. Good Size guard. Good shooter. Rebounds well and plays good D.

Laurel

Laurel: Laurel is a very deep and athletic team, like 12 deep or so. Another team that has the team appeal rather than player appeal. They get after you with a suffocating defense. They play with very high pressure the full length of the court. It will be worth watching when they meet up with Neshoba in Jackson.

Meridian

Ladarius Brewer 6-4 Jr F: 13 pts. Long lanky ball handler. Has the ability to create his own shot.

Tyrone Brewer 6-5 So G: A very gifted ball player with tons of potential. Long lanky ball handler with a great shot.

Jay Malone 5-10 Jr G: 20 pts, 8-12 ft. Very fast guard with tons of heart. Gets to the basket easy.

Bay Springs

Bay Springs: after losing all but 1 player on the state championship team you would think they would be finished, but they are reloading and starting over. The 2 freshmen they have are very similar to what they had with Stevens and Spivey. In my opinion these 2 new freshmen will surpass what they had with Big Bruce and Jonnas.

Damien Wheaton 6-7 Fr F: 6 pts and a lot of blocks. He could be the most talented freshman in 2A. A 6-7 mobile forward, not a guard yet but could posssibly be. Long lanky body with room to grow. Big time shot blocker. Offensively raw with plenty of room to grow.

Kevin Grimes 6-1 Fr G: 20 pts, 3-3 ft. Hustle player trying to find his way on the court. Hustled his way to 20. Another Fr that is going to be great.

Nick Fenderson 6-0 Sr G: 20 pts, 2 3’s. The only Bulldog with a championship ring. He is the heart and soul of this team. He runs the offense and scores when needed. Very good at driving and dishing.

North Forrest

North Forrest: This team reminds me a lot of a West Tally team from 2 years ago. Tally is 26-0 this year and a front runner for the title. They are a very fast team full of hustle. Keep an eye on them down the road.

Armonte Barnes 5-8 So SG: 18 pts, 5 3’s. Possibly the best shooter at the event.
