BIGG Christmas Classic

BIGG Christmas Classic

at Biggersville

First things first. Let’s get the important things out of the way for us larger guys. Here is a list of sponsors for the BIGG hospitality room: Mi Toro, Don Julios, Dilworths Tamales (new celebrity endorsement from Northeast Coach Wright-I think they actually had to ban him from the tamales), Taylor’s Escape (fish, fries and hush puppies),Zaxby’s (nibblers), Kenny’s BBQ, Pizza Hut, Peppers Deli, Rib Shack, Backyard Burgers, White Trolley Cafe, McCalisters Deli, Dinner Bell, Pizza Grocery, Subway, Domino’s, Borroum’s Drug Store (famous slug burgers), Briggs Wholesale and AB’s Quick Stop. All pitched in and donated food or items for the hospitality room. Thanks to Coach Little and Mr. Nash for the great hospitality shown at this event. Great games, great teams and great players.

BIGG Christmas Classic Notes

Ripley

Ripley: this team has some good pieces with a great leader. A couple big guys that looked good. This team could get much better as the season goes on and as they gain chemistry with each other.

Dewayne Cox 5-9 Jr G: 12 pts, 10 reb, 8 ast, 6 st. Now that is a stat line. Silky smooth guard; good passer, not great but doesn’t make mistakes or careless passes. He is a natural born scorer. When he shoots the ball it seems to really be magnetized to the rim. He does everything on the court as proven by his stat line. He does it naturally, not going out of his way to get it done.

West Union

West Union: Hoping not to offend anyone with this prediction but these guys are not going to win 1A. However, they will give some folks some problems. They are undersized and are definitely not the most athletic team on the court. Back to back weeks I’ve seen them beat a more athletic and much more talented New Site team and a much, much larger Tishomingo County team. They play old school basketball, hustle and hit free throws (27-34 against Tishomingo County). This is a very scrappy team and Coach Henderson gets MAX effort out of his guys.

Tishomingo County

Caleb McCalmon 6-1 Jr G/F: 17 pts, 2 3’s. He had a low post and 1 dunk, caught the ball under the basket and went up one handed for the flush. Hits free throws and 3’s. Can handle the ball, not great but can do it. He could be a steal for a JUCO Coach if he gets in the weight room. Reminded me a lot of Kenny Paul Geno when he was a sophomore, just a little shorter.

Myrtle

Chris Hill 6-5 Sr F: 25 pts. Big beast around the goal. Played with great hustle, his hands were great around the basket.

Tanner Cox Sr W: 3 pts. Just 3 points, why is his name on here. He is kinda pushed to the side with all the size that Myrtle has. He is really good. He does the small stuff that doesn’t get noticed. He can handle the ball and shoot. He gets to the rim. He defends and doesn’t care if he scores.

Desoto Central

Desoto Central: great team speed; deep bench with no drop off of talent. They play really good team ball.

Jaylan Shelton 5-11 Sr SF: 18 pts. Can really get up for 5-11; quick guard that has a knack for being everywhere on the court

Tavares McGlaun 5-10 Sr G: 15 pts, 3 3’s. He has a really good shot on him, muscular guard that played really good defense.

Justin Flakes 6-0 Sr PG: 12 pts. This is the silent leader of the team. He is capable of going out and putting up big numbers but sets back and lets his teammates get the numbers.

Aberdeen

Queshod Young 5-9 Sr G: 27 pts, 7 3’s. He was hot. Plays all out every game; all over the court

Horn Lake

Jitaurious Gordan 6-0 Jr G: 22 pts, 3 reb, 7 ast. He took the game over in the 4th quarter for the comeback win. He scored 13 of his 22 points in that quarter and also defended Young from Aberdeen. He held Young to 2 points, both free throws in the 4th. Outscoring your man 13-2 in the 4th, that’s clutch. Created a lot of lay-ups and fast break opportunities for his team.

Ashland

Ashland: Team got down big but hustle got them back in it. They never give up.

DeAnthony Tipler 5-9 So G: 33 pts, 4 3’s, 6 reb, 5 ast, 4 st. Another great stat line. Effortlessly all over the place. Another guy with the knack of being in the right place, basketball English I guess you could say.

Biggersville

Biggersville: great team win to put them in the conversation again in 1A. They are still a year away but at least they are back in the mix again.

Devonte Spears 6-0 So G: 24 pts. He hit the game winning basket at the buzzer. Coach Little trusted a sophomore with the ball to win the game. That should tell you a lot about this guy. You can check out the game winning shot coming soon to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YoTube.

Gentry

Gentry: this team is a legit contender in 4A. They play great team ball. They will get after you the whole game all the way down the court. Coach Potts has these guys playing ball. Amazing ball movement, each player is very unselfish. Crash the boards well, shot 9-11 free throws in the game.

Ernest Minton 6-4 So: This guy has potential to be good. Long, lanky and athletic playing with high energy. Keep an eye on him down the road.

Corinth

Corinth: I was not a believer in this team until this game. They played very hard and played well as a team. Very good team defensively. It was hard to pick a player of the game for this one because both teams played great team ball. Hit 18-24 free throws in the 4th quarter and 30-43 for the game.

Baldwyn

C. J. McGaha 5-10 Jr G: 6 pts. Quick guard with exceptional ball handling skills. CJ showed the ability to get around the quick Tupelo defenders anytime he wanted to. His ability to get in the lane and distribute is special. Expect great things down the road from him as he continues to grow into a ball player. He is playing his 1st true year of basketball.

Tupelo

Tupelo: WOW fast. Great team. The more I see them the more I’m thinking they might actually be able to make a run in 6A. This team is 10 deep with no drop off of talent and still waiting on 6-6 big man to return from hand injury. Great team ball. Coach Norwood has done a great job with these guys. Very tough schedule coming up to test their abilities. Another team that plays from end line to end line. They get after you defensively and crash the boards.
