Hot Bed Classic Notes

New Albany Hot Bed Classic Notes

The New Albany Hot Bed Classic means so much to me. It is the tournament that started it all for me. My 1st Hot Bed was 1996 and I have not missed one since. I almost got snowed out this year but I made it. Friday I got in a massive snow storm in Kentucky. I was driving 25 mph most of the way. It took 6 hours to go 84 miles total before the state shut the road down. I got up early Saturday and fought threw the mess to make it in by lunch. There is a video on my Instagram, Facebook and Twitter for evidence. The Hot Bed is where so many people can come together. You can’t go 2 rows without seeing high school coaches or players from teams not participating in the event. One year I was extremely sick with a 102 degree temp and I was pumping advil to stay. I’ve been to some Hot Beds where you had to get personal with the person sitting next to you, even if you didn’t want to. I met a larger man at one of these events where you had to get close, he went by the name “Bo Peep” on the radio as a truck driver. He is no longer with us but he was a great man. I met another short, skinny coach one year and have grew to respect his opinion greatly over the years. You never can tell who will be sitting around you at these events so ask, Where are you from? It’s a great place to make friends. It doesn’t matter what race or from what town. We are all there for great basketball.  This Hot Bed was attended by many JUCO coaches, an Ole Miss assistant, Alabama assistant and MS State head coach Ben Howland. Under Armor had reps there as well as the head guy over the City of Palms Classic in FL. For those that don’t know, it is a top 10 event in the country. There were many AAU coaches looking for new summer players. Thanks to New Albany and Mr David Goode for putting on a top notch event. Also, a special thanks to Olive Branch for coming in to play at the last minute to play a hard game against Columbus. JO Johnson, Huntsville AL, was not able to make it due to snow and icy conditions in north AL. It’s really hard to just jump in and play a team without notice and they did it.

Notes

Center Hill

Job Vernor 5-8 Sr G: 22 pts, 3 3’s, 7-7 ft. Smooth lefty ball handler. He gets to the basket really fast. Can drive and dish or get the ball to the basket. Long range shot.

New Albany

Miles Washington 6-7 Sr F/C: 21 pts. I walked away really impressed with him. Rebounds well. He hustled the entire game. He is one of the better defenders around. Usually blocks a ton of shots.

Jordan Lipsey 5-7 So G: 16 pts, 2 3’s, 2-2 ft. The last time I watched him play I was intrigued by him. This time I was impressed. He plays great defense. He is very fast and can handle the ball. He has a pretty pull up J.

Lawrence County

Gabe Lewis 5-8 Sr G: 15 pts, 2 3’s, 3 reb. I was really impressed with his hustle and athletic ability.

KeyShawn Feazell 6-8 Jr F/C: 21 pts, 8-10 fg, 3 3’s, 8 reb, 1 st. He is the #1 ranked Jr in the state. He is very under ranked and under rated. Wait how is that, he is #1? Ok, I watch a lot of basketball across the US and I’ve probably seen about 75 of the top 100 players in the nation. He should be nationally ranked. I will even step out and say he will potentially play in the association one day and he’s not nationally ranked now. Some Coach is going to get a big time steal with him in D1. He should be high D1.

Clinton

Clinton: This is a very good shooting team that played basketball with great discipline. They play good defense and will be in the mix in 6A this year. Throw in a big man like Smith and they are really dangerous.

Galin Smith 6-9 Jr C: 15 pts. Another over looked player in the state. He really impressed me with the way he played. He was holding Alex Reese, a 6-9 Jr that is being highly recruited, and went toe to toe with him. That says a lot because Reese is very good and rising in the ranks. Smith made him look weak at points of the game.

Columbus

Columbus: Top 25 nationally looking team again. They played aggressive and physical. They played above the rim most of the game. They looked unbeatable again. Jartavious Dobbs 6-9 Sr F/C, Arteveous McDyess 6-8 Sr F/C and Demetrius Clopton 6-9 Sr F/C were killers on the boards also.

Robert Woodard II 6-6 So G: 20 pts, 2 3’s. I don’t have all of his stat line but he had to have close to a triple double. He was grabbing boards and taking off down the court hitting open guys for shots. And it seemed like he was doing this on every play down the court. His basketball knowledge is impressive at such a young age.

22 FT Academy

Darius Hicks 6-7 Sr F: 15 pts, 2 3’s. The MS native moved to SC to play his Sr season. Hicks looked really good and has improved greatly over the last year. Showed great range and the ability to play inside and out. The competition is doing him well.

Southwest Christian Academy

Tyrik Dixon 6-1 Sr G: 20 pts, 3 3’s. OK I know he is not from MS but this is his 4th time to play here this season so why not. This is a special player. His heart is huge and he hustles and gives it his all on every play.
