2019 Magnolia Hoops Southern Spring Invitational Report

2019 Southern Spring Invitational Report

This report will cover the 2019 Southern Spring Invitation. Ty Quarles with Team Carroll does an outstanding job with this tournament. It is a “can’t miss” event for me every year with top level teams and talent under one roof. In fact, 20 courts under one roof. There is plenty of food at and around the facility so no reason to drive anywhere. Ty does a really good job of reaching out to media and scouting services to get them in the building to cover the event. Check out Southern Spring Invitational for all teams, scores and bracket results.

Notes: MEBO came to play early and jumped out to a big lead. Daeshun Ruffin (5-11 ’21 G Callaway) continues to impress with scoring ability and defensive presence. He has really started bulking up and has the look of a next level guard.

Notes: Jayden Stone (6-3 ’20 G Sunrise Christian Academy KS) continues to dominate. I was really impressed with Jalen Myers (’20 G Bob Jones AL). He has good size and length. He really extends the defense with his shot and his ability to put the ball on the floor.

MEBO (EYBL) 4-1 (Meridian, MS) 80

Hawks Elite 1-2 (Tuscaloosa, AL) 53

Notes: Jay Barnes (’21 G Oak Grove) looked really, really good in the win. That was the best I’ve seen him play and he really impressed me. Big Joseph Dupree (6-6 ’21 F Murrah) is just as smooth as ever with the ball. It was also the best I’ve seen Jayme Mitchell (6-2 ’21 SG Forest Hill) play too. The potential really shined for him at the event. Jamarvious Phillips (6-2 ’21 F Starkville) continued to rebound at such a high rate. Every ball that comes of the glass is his when he’s on the court. Bo Barber (5-7 ’21 PG Homewood AL) was really impressive. He was about the only player that could get anything going against MEBO.

MEBO (EYBL) 4-1 (Meridian, MS) 74

Nike Elite Stars 2021-Blake 4-2 (Winfield, AL) 64 Bronze Champs

Notes: I had this one marked as a must see game. There was a few things I hoped happened. First was hoping that Joseph Dupree (6-6 ’21 F Murrah) and Bryson Hall (6-8 ’21 F Tuscaloosa County AL) matched up against each other. It happened and it was fun for me to watch the few times it did. Bryson is one of my favorite players in Alabama. Bryson and Joseph are the same players. They are so close with their skill sets. The next was to see how Devin Carter (6-0 ’21 PG Florence) responded against the high powered MEBO guards. He did just fine and he more than held his own. He runs a team so well that when he has to sit you really see a big difference. Jay Barnes (’21 G Oak Grove) and Jayme Mitchell (6-2 ’21 SG Forest Hill) continued their impressive play in the game of spurts.

Notes: It’s been a couple years since I had the opportunity to watch Cam Hunter (6-2 ’21 G Bryant AR) and he is developing into a major college prospect. He plays just as smooth and he has really grown and is developing a college body.
