2019-21 MHSAA Basketball Divisions

A lot of people are already starting to ask about the new regions. Schools moving up, schools moving down. There is a good bit of movement for the next two seasons so I will try my best to break it down for you. The new divisions will be fun to see how they shake out.

1A

1-1A

Last year: Biggersville, Blue Mountain, Jumpertown, Pine Grove, Thrasher, Wheeler

Next year: Biggersville, Blue Mountain, Falkner, Jumpertown, Pine Grove, Thrasher

Notes: Wheeler moves out and Falkner moves in.

2-1A

Last year: Ashland, Byers, Falkner, Hickory Flat, Myrtle, Potts Camp, West Union

Next year: Baldwyn, Ingomar, Smithville, Tremont, TCPS, Wheeler

Notes: Smithville was on their way to being the leader in whatever division they would be in. However, traditional 2A powers Baldwyn and Ingomar join this division as new 1A teams.

3-1A

Last year: Brooks, Coldwater, Shaw, Simmons

Next year: Ashland, Coldwater, Byers, Hickory Flat, Myrtle, West Union

4-1A

Last year: Houlka, Okolona, Smithville, Tremont, TCPS

Next year: Coffeeville, Hamilton, Houlka, Okolona, Vardaman

What happened: Houlka and Okolona stayed and everybody else changed.

Notes: Congrats to Coffeeville, Hamilton and Vardaman for being in the north again.

5-1A

Last year: Coffeeville, Ethel, French Camp, McAdams

Next year: Ethel, French Camp, McAdams, Nanih Waiya, Noxapater, West Lowndes

Notes: Nanih Waiya, Noxapater and West Lowndes joined a small divison.

6-1A

Last year: Hamilton, Nanih Waiya, Noxapater, Vardaman, West Lowndes

Next year: Leflore County, Ray Brooks, Shaw, Simmons, West Bolivar, West Tallahatchie

Notes: Big changes here. All teams move to the south. Leflore, Rosedale and Tally move down from 2A. This is probably the deepest and best division in 1A.

Notes: Defending state champ, East Marion, moves up to 2A and Richton moves down.

2A

Last year: Baldwyn, East Union, Ingomar, New Site, Strayhorn, Walnut

Next year: East Union, Mantachie, New Site, Potts Camp, Strayhorn, Walnut

Notes: Baldwyn and Ingomar are gone. A dangerous Potts Camp team moves up after making it to Jackson in 1A. A very improving Mantachie team moves down from 3A.

Notes: Leflore moves down to 1A and Northside changes divisions. A very improving JZ George team moves down from 3A.

Next year: Charleston, Coahoma County, Leland, M. S. Palmer, Northside, O’Bannon

Notes: A very good and tough division. Charleston and Palmer move down from 3A. Northside moves to a division closer to home.

Next year: Pelahatchie, Pisgah, Riverside, South Delta, Madison St. Joseph Catholic

Notes: Wholesale changes here. Pelahatchie, Pisgah and St. Joe move to the north.

Next year: Bay Springs, Enterprise-Clarke, Heidelberg, Mize, Puckett, Taylorsville

Notes: These teams changed division numbers and moved to the south.

Notes: A very tough division gets tougher. Richton moves down to 1A and is replaced by defending 1A state champ, East Marion.

Notes: 1-6A and 2-6A are kinda confusing. Why did they not leave Hernando, Horn Lake, Southaven and Desoto Central in the same division and put Oxford, Tupelo, OB and Lewisburg in the other?
