Magnolia Hoops 2020 Hotbed Classic Report

2020 New Albany Kiwanis

Hotbed Classic Report

The stats are provided by Blake Long and his Northeast MS CC crew. They are the best in the business at keeping stats and can’t be thanked enough for the great job that they do.

Thank you to Mr. David Goode for putting together a really great schedule for our enjoyment. The Hotbed Classic was also a result of all the work that Gerald Snider put in over the years. Mr. David and the Hotbed staff did a great job of remembering Mr. Gerald. He had a seat in his memory on the baseline with popcorn and a diet Coke. And of course, Gerald’s favorite place at any event was named after him with the Gerald Snider Hospitality Room. Not seeing Gerald at the Hotbed and in New Albany gym was hard to do. I’m sure he was watching the “Real Deals” and “Sleepers” from above.

Notes: A.I. Nugent (5-9 ’21 F Myrtle 28 pts 8-15 fg 12-14 ft 6 reb 1 ast 4 st) played as hard as he could keeping the Hawks in the game until Amory finally woke up. Isaiah Thompson (6-4 ’20 F Amory 16 pts 7-11 fg 1 3’s 9 reb 3 ast 1 blk) and Jamerison Martin (5-10 ’21 PG Amory 19 pts 1 3’s 10 reb 7 ast 2 st) were just too much for Myrtle to handle in the opening game of The Hotbed.

Alcorn Central Golden Bears 5-19 (3A Glen, MS) 62

MS #248, 3A #37

Notes: East Union jumped out to an early lead and cruised to the easy victory despite the strong post play of John Rilee Williams (6-3 ’20 C Alcorn Central 22 pts 9-17 fg 10 reb 1 ast 1 blk). East Union was paced by DeJuan Hubbard (6-0 ’20 G East Union 28 pts 4 3’s 5 reb 1 blk 5 st). They have good size down low in Josh Henderson (6-5 ’21 PF East Union 8 pts 4 reb 2 ast 2 blk 1 st). West Union 13-10 (1A Myrtle, MS) 56

MS #141, 1A #11

Notes: West Union played the perennial west Tennessee power close in the first quarter but didn’t have enough weapons to hang with the Tigers. Luke Willard (6-2 ’20 G/F West Union 23 pts 10-19 fg 3 3’s 10 reb 2 ast) played his heart out and had no fear of the bigger and faster team. Coach Moe Miller is working to develop a great squad. Javar Daniel (6-8 ’23 F/C Arlington 18 pts 9-14 fg 7 reb 3 blk) leads a talented young group of underclassmen that will be fun to keep an eye on over the next few years.

MS #43, 4A #9

Potts Camp Cardinals 16-6 (2A Potts Camp, MS) 53

MS #62, 2A #2

Notes: Potts Camp was coming of a very hard division game the night before and just ran out of gas against the rested 4A team. The dominant guard duo of Isaiah Ball (5-10 ’20 G New Albany 33 pts 11-15 fg 8-9 3’s 4 reb 2 ast 1 blk 2 st) and Mitchell Shettles (6-1 ’20 G New Albany 22 pts 4 3’s 7 reb 9 ast 1 st) took advantage of the sluggish Cardinals and ran them off the court. Isaiah only missed 4 shots from the floor while Mitchell was messing around trying to get a triple-double. Ball received an offer from Blue Mountain College shortly after the game and I’m sure there will be many more to come as the next level coaches begin to see the duo.

Hueytown Golden Gophers 8-18 (6A Hueytown, AL) 64

AL #190, 6A #40

Notes: Holly Springs is finally starting to gel and they are starting to look like a championship contender. Of course, Tyhem Reaves (6-2 ’20 G Holly Springs 13 pts 3 reb 1 ast 1 blk), Cori Bell (6-1 ’20 G Holly Springs 23 pts 10-16 fg 3 3’s 1 reb 2 ast) and Derek Fountain (6-8 ’20 G Holly Springs 21 pts 2 3’s 12 reb 3 ast 2 blk 4 st) are doing what they do. Derek is the one that gets all the attention but Tyhem and Cori are really showing that they can play on the next level. Another player that I’m starting to see a very high future in is Marquavous Jones (6-2 ’22 G/F Holly Springs 3 pts 1 3’s 3 reb 1 ast 2 blk 1 st). He is starting to show glimpses that he has the potential to be the next big star at Holly High.

MS #3, 6A #2

Mountain Brook Spartans 25-2 (7A Birmingham, AL) 81

AL #1, 7A #1

Notes: Cameron “Mook” Matthews (6-6 ’20 F Olive Branch 21 pts 10-14 fg 9 reb 9 ast 6 st) just refuses to lose. I think I missed the mark on OB. I would now put them in the rankings as the number one team in the state. You have a beastly monster in Mook and then a lot of shooters to around him. If Terry Joyner Jr (6-5 ’22 F Olive Branch 19 pts 6-7 fg 4-5 3’s 6 reb 1 st) continues to have games like this, it helps put OB on that next level. They knocked off an extremely great team in Mountain Brook. Holt Bashinsky (6-6 ’20 G Mountain Brook 22 pts 5 3’s 5-7 ft 1 reb 3 ast 1 blk 1 st) can flat out shoot it. Colby Jones (6-5 ’20 G Olive Branch 38 pts 13-23 fg 4-5 3’s 8-10 ft 11 reb 3 ast 1 st) was the best player at the Hotbed. He is so fun to watch.

(B) Ingomar Falcons 27-0 (1A New Albany, MS) 57

MS #12, 1A #1

New Site Royals 23-3 (2A New Site, MS) 56

MS #35, 2A #1

Notes: This game was packed. It was circled on my must watch games since Thanksgiving. I was hoping at the time that New Site would’ve come in undefeated and we’d have a battle for the first loss. That didn’t work out but we did have the #1 1A team verses the #1 2A team. This was an instant classic and will be remembered for years to come. The basketball play in this game was top quality. In fact, there were only 8 turnovers combined by both teams in the entire game. The game had 5 lead changes and was tied 9 times. With 8 seconds remaining, your New Site with one of the best shooters in the country and your down by three. Who gets the ball? Yep, Walker Moreland (5-11 ’20 SG New Site 16 pts 2 3’s 4-4 ft 2 ast) gets his shot from outside. Every single person in the gym knew it was going in. But wait, he missed it. Walker, whaaaaaat. Oh, ok. He got fouled. He goes to the line after two consecutive Ingomar time-outs by Coach Ashley and sinks all three while barely touching the net. Tied game. Hunter Bynum (5-10 ’20 G Ingomar 14 pts 2 3’s 3 reb 4 ast) brings the ball up the court and is fouled with 5 seconds to go. He is going to the line for the one-and-one. Veteran mastermind Rick Howell says whatever you can do I’ll one up you. You tried to ice my guy with two time-outs then you get three consecutive time-outs. It was like a nasty game of UNO with time-outs being dished out instead of skips. Bynum knocks down the first free-throw for the one point lead. Second shot up, it’s a miss. New Site is in great position to get the rebound with two 6-6 guys manning the low block but Clayton Stanford (6-3 ’20 F Ingomar 8 pts 7 reb 4 ast 1 st) sneaks in, snags the ball and dribbles the clock out. So here is my dilemma, who gets the Magnolia Hoops Player of the Game? Hunter for hitting the free-throw or Clayton for sealing the game with the rebound. As bad as they both deserve it neither one. I got to go with the kid that got on my nerves so bad about four years ago in summer league play. This little kid was running on the court at every single dead ball or stop in play throwing shots up. He was in the way so bad and kinda held the games up by waiting for him to move before they could put the ball in play. As bad as I was aggravated I could tell he had a true love for the game, more than most. Several years later he is playing in one of the most intense and loudest games that he could possibly ever participate in to keep his team undefeated. And other than the championship game itself, it’s on one of the biggest stages in Mississippi at the Hotbed Classic. For Hill Country folks, this is a dream come true. Tyson Smithey (6-3 ’21 F Ingomar 10 pts 5-8 fg 13 reb (7 offensive) 1 ast) stepped up with a big double-double that included very timely offensive boards. His hustle play earned him the Magnolia Hoops Player of the Game. Another positive note from the Ingomar side of the notepad was how Zach Shugars (6-4 ’21 G/F Ingomar 14 pts 2 3’s 4-5 ft 7 reb 1 ast 1 st) looked. Shugar Bear has recovered from his leg injury that he suffered over the summer and is back and better than ever. He is transitioning from a 4/5 guy into a 2/3 guy and I can ever see him continue to develop into a 1. On the New Site side of the note pad, Carson Fitzsimmons (6-1 ’20 G New Site 24 pts 2 3’s 10 reb 2 ast) had a very solid game in the losing effort. I know the stat cheat doesn’t reflect a great game but I’d like to also acknowledge the play of his cousin Colton Fitzsimmons (5-7 ’21 PG New Site 2 pts 1 reb 2 ast). Colton doesn’t look to cram the stats. He simply protects the ball and helps run the team. He played 28 minutes against a very stingy and tough Ingomar defense without having a single turnover. I would also like to send a special thanks to Coach Ashley, Coach Howell, players from both teams and the crazy fan bases for both teams for making this a game to remember for years to come.
