2020 Division Tournament Report
The stats listed are unofficial but are close to what the players accomplished on the court (mostly because I run my mouth too much and don’t pay the closest attention the entire game). The stats used are based on the highest numbers from what I keep, the score book has or stats listed on MaxPreps.
How do you get on the Magnolia Hoops Report? I put players on here that catch my eye or have a combined stat total of ten. Catching my eye could be leadership from the bench, winning the game or just hard play. Combined stat line of ten can be in any form. It’s doesn’t have to be points only. It can be any of the stats added up to make double-digits.
The Magnolia Hoops Player of the Game award goes to the player that affects the game the most for the winning team. The Katie Roberts Photography Senior Snapshot is the senior that either had the best stat line or one that next level coaches need to be aware of.
The Magnolia Hoops Head of the Class is the player with the best stat line by grade. The Magnolia Hoops Starting Five is the top five players with the best stat line for the entire day. The Magnolia Hoops Head Coach is the Coach that did the best job with their team. The Katie Roberts Photography Senior Squad is the top five seniors with the best stat lines. The Magnolia Hoops Best Game is either the best or most interesting game of the day. The Magnolia Hoops Top Five Teams is the best teams on this day and not necessarily the entire year.

South Pontotoc Cougars 6-20 (4A Pontotoc, MS) 44
MS #254, 4A #44
Notes: Jeremy Emerson (’22 C Caledonia 8 pts 12 reb 1 st) couldn’t be stopped on the boards. The undersized, strong, post player only totaled 12 but it seemed like he had 30. The heartbreaking loss ended the season for South Pontotoc. If they had pulled out the win, Alex Collins (’20 G South Pontotoc 9 pts 2 3’s 3-4 ft 2 ast 2 charges taken) would’ve easily been the Player of the Game. His defensive effort on Cooper McClesky (6-6 ’20 G Caledonia 5 pts 4 reb 1 st) was very annoying and bothersome. I think he even sat with Cooper on the Caledonia bench during timeouts. He didn’t leave his side in the box-and-one set and limited him to one made field goal the entire game. He did this by limiting his total offensive touches to less than ten. When he did touch the ball he was immediately doubled or tripled.

MS #131, 4A #26
Itawamba Indians 8-20 (4A Fulton, MS) 44

Notes: The duo of Kha’sen Mitchell (6-1 ’20 G/F Mooreville 9 pts 3-4 ft 8 reb 1 ast 1 st) and Javonn Hadley (’20 G/F Mooreville 21 pts 7-9 ft 5 reb 1 st 1 blk) was too tough for Itawamba to overcome. Pat Patterson (5-10 ’20 PG Mooreville 6 pts 7 reb 6 ast) came off the bench and provided a much needed spark for the Troopers. Dathan Timms (G/F Mooreville 7 pts 1 3’s 4 reb 3 ast 2 st) is another very solid looking piece coming off the bench for Mooreville. Deion Shells (5-10 ’20 PG Itawamba 12 pts 4-4 ft 4 reb 6 st) gave everything he had in his final high school game. Arvesta Troupe (6-3 ’22 G/F Itawamba 9 pts 1 3’s 4 reb 1 st) is an interesting looking prospect for Coach Wilson. Isaac Smith (6-0 ’23 SF Itawamba 12 pts 17 reb 1 ast 4 st 1 blk) is one that caught me by surprise when going over the stats. I didn’t really notice him or he didn’t catch my eye as a young prospect but he sure did fill the stat sheet up. I was probably thinking he was an experienced upperclassman. He’s one that I need to check out again.

MS #106, 1A #6
Vardaman Rams 1-22 (1A Vardaman, MS) 30
MS #318, 1A #45
Notes: Coffeeville might have the best duo in 1A in Jadarrius “JD” Kincaide (6-3 ’20 SG Coffeeville 20 pts 6 3’s 2 reb 2 ast 1 blk 1 st) and Quavon Marion (6-0 ’20 G Coffeeville 21 pts 1 3’s 3 reb 5 ast 3 st). Marion is so smooth with his play. He plays within the game and scores with ease. JD has to be one of the best lights out shooters in the state. And he has extended range too. How are the next level coaches not all over these two? Dontavious Poole (6-3 ’22 F/C Coffeeville 2 pts 4 reb 1 ast 1 blk 2 st) and Edarious Williams (6-5 ’22 F Coffeeville 8 pts 2 reb 1 ast 1 st 2 blk) provide a very good future for Coach Mays over the next few years. Coffeeville is a team that has a chance to beat any team around on the right night. They could be extremely dangerous in the playoffs.

Okolona Chieftains 11-15 (1A Okolona, MS) 53
MS #184, 1A #14
Notes: Okolona did about as good of a job as you can possibly do with DaShun Berry (6-1 ’20 G Houlka 26 pts (11 in 4th qtr) 9-15 fg 2 3’s 18 reb 2 ast 1 st). He was face guarded and double or triple teamed when he touched the ball. His scoring was held in check, even with his 26. He did come alive in the fourth quarter with 11 points and most of them was within the last couple minutes of the game. Okolona kept Houlka down for most of the game with their wild and crazy defensive pressure. What DaShun did do to impress was his rebounds. His timing on rebounds was impeccable. Brandon Pulliam (6-3 ’23 G/F Houlka 19 pts 1 3’s 8 reb 1 st) kept the Wildcats in the game with his career high night. Andrew Crape (6-3 ’21 C Okolona 18 pts 9 reb 1 ast 2 blk) was a force down low for Okolona when he got the ball.

MS #90, 6A #22
Horn Lake Eagles 16-13 (6A Horn Lake, MS) 58
MS #38, 6A #16
Notes: This was a game where both teams left their all on the court. Josh Williams (6-4 ’21 G Hernando 20 pts 3 3’s 5-6 ft 10 reb 2 ast 3 blk) earned Player of the Game honors with his big double-double. He is a good, long guard that has really high potential. Dezmon Cummings (5-5 ’21 PG Hernando 19 pts 2 3’s 5-5 ft 2 reb 5 ast 1 st) was also in the running with his strong play down the stretch. Christian “Chris” Terrell (5-11 ’20 G Horn Lake 38 pts (19 in 4th qtr) 2 3’s 14-17 ft 4 reb 4 st) can play. The Horn Lake guard can easily play on the next level. He is so fast. His quickness allows him to get into the lane and get shots up or get to the foul line. He hits free-throws at a high clip too.

MS #50, 6A #17
Oxford Chargers 22-9 (6A Oxford, MS) 49
MS #25, 6A #12
Notes: Let me know if you’ve heard this story before. Southaven has a 6-4 stud, SEC level, wide receiver. And he’s really good at basketball too. The previous 5 star football player that now plays for the Toronto Raptors, Terence Davis, was in attendance to see his Chargers claim the division title. The current football stud claimed Player of the Game honors. Isaiah Brevard (6-4 ’21 G Southaven 16 pts 2 reb 1 ast 2 st 1 blk) has turned into a very good player on the court too. Jonterious “JT” Chalmers (6-2 ’22 PG Southaven 12 pts 1 3’s 3 reb 1 ast) came off the bench to provide a spark. Kylan Blackmon (6-3 ’21 G Oxford 26 pts 2 3’s 8-10 ft 9 reb 1 ast 2 st) took plenty of bumps and still managed to have a great game.
