Rodney Hood Elite Camp Notes

You can’t begin to talk about the Rodney Hood Elite Camp without thanking all the special people that were involved with putting this event together. First and foremost, Mr Ricky Hood Sr. Mr Hood speaks with authority and kids listen (including his own grown kids). Mr. Hood has instilled generosity into his kids and taught them to have big hearts. The Boys and Girls Club is lucky to have such a great man running the show. Meridian is really lucky to have him in place to help with the young kids. Next, you have to give Rodney Hood the big thank you. I’ve heard the statement, well he makes X amount a year he can afford to do events like this. Well that is correct but look at how may of the NBA guys don’t give back. He don’t have to come to MS and help out. He could do this in Utah or North Carolina. But, he is giving back to the state he came from. You might have noticed that I said MS and not Meridian. He is not only helping Meridian but the whole state by bringing players in from all 4 corners. He helped house and feed players from the hill county, delta, pine belt, gulf coast, golden triangle, Memphis metro, Jackson and the river region. Thank you Rodney Hood, thank you. I started my site to help the kids from all regions of MS and it feels great to see another group with the same objective. They could be just focusing on Meridian. Next you have to mention Ricky Hood Jr. Ricky is like the motor that makes the group go. He is the motivator that sparks the event and keeps it on track. Ricky is one of the most kind hearted persons you will ever meet. Expect great things from the MS Express organization in the next few years. The MS Express is the AAU teams that the Hoods help oversee. Last but not least, you have the true brains behind the event. Nicole Hood is the brain that helps keep things going. It was very difficult to ask a question without getting a response of, let me check with Nicole. She is kinda behind the scenes but is very, very hard working. Thank you Nicole and Ricky for everything you do.

Lebron Johnson 9 yr old Dekalb, MS: stepping out of the box on this one. I usually don’t evaluate the younger kids and I didn’t this one but……. He got the Most Outstanding Camper Award for the 2nd year in a row. Keep an out out for him in about 5 years.

Austin Crowley 6-4 2019 G West Point 6-6 wing span: Totally dominated the 9th and 10th grade portion of the camp. He established himself as one of the top 2019’s in the state. Smooth, shifty guard can get any shot he wants and has the ability to find the open man. He should be getting national attention soon.

Tucker Hill 6-6 2019 G/F Tishomingo County 6-6 wingspan Burnsville, MS: didn’t really have the best camp but he is a great project going forward. 6-6 with handles and a good 3 ball. The best thing about his game??? He can shoot with both hands on a regular basis.Very intriguing to watch down the road.

Casey “CJ” Smith 5-11 2018 G West Lowndes 5-11 wingspan Columbus, MS: Sunday was the best I’ve ever seen him play. He rose to the occasion when challenged. Stocky guard can get to the rack and get good shots off or find the open man.

Reginald Bolden Jr 5-8 2018 PG Gentry 5-7 wingspan Indianola, MS: This guy can go and doesn’t have a problem putting his 5-7 frame up against the big guys when he gets in the lane. Very fast. He should make some noise from the delta this year. He was one of my dads favorite guys to watch at the camp, especially in the 1-on-1 comps.

Tyron “Ty” Brewer 6-6 2018 G Meridian 6-8 wingspan: Long lanky guard that wasn’t afraid of a challenge. He was always in the mix in the good battles on the court. He showed some range, one of the things he was missing last year.

Onyinyechi “Brown” Eyisi 6-9 2018 Prolific Prep, CA 7-2 wingspan Jackson, MS: physical phenom. He will be playing at Prolific Prep in California this year. Will he have an opportunity to play a high school game in MS this year???? We’ll have to wait and see. Look forward to see his game grow over the next few years. Should be special.

Javian Fleming 6-8 2018 C Canton 7-1 wingspan: What do you do if you are an undersized center? You use your 7-1 wingspan, your bullish body and your ballerina footwork to make scoring baskets look easy against the bigger guys. I am even more impressed with him every time I watch him play, just like every college coach out there this summer has been.

Andrew Junkin 7-0 2018 C New Hope 7-0 wingspan: Hmmm???? 7-0 check. High motor-check. High motor-check. High motor-check again. Who needs a smart 7 footer with a high motor? Yeah Coaches should start beating his door down soon.

Hogan Linzy 6-6 2018 G/F Lafayette County 6-5 wingspan Oxford, MS: Yes I know, more love to the smart guys. 6-6 lefty that can handle the ball, pass well and shoot for range (smart range). Automatic 15 footer. Again, Coaches start knocking.

Ladarius Marshall 6-6 2018 F Forest Hill 6-7 wingspan: The best D1 tight end in basketball not playing football. Freakishly strong athlete that can jump out of the gym.

Bryson Mills 6-5 2018 G Mendenhall 6-5 wingspan: the former Magee player didn’t shoot the ball well at all. What do Coaches want to see when players are off? That’s right, he was killing on the offensive boards. His defense was top notch. Ball handling is much improved since last season. He really impressed me with the boards.

Malik Riddle 6-3 2018 G/F Marshall Academy 6-7 wingspan: He had a very good camp. He showed the ability to get in the lane and score with ease. He has a great first step, second step and third step……by then he is scoring while you catch up.

Kenneth Nwuba 6-10 2018 C Oak Hill Academy, VA 7-1 wingspan Jackson, MS: I was very impressed with his passing ability in the low post. Patience and strength is a virtue for him. One National Championship under his belt already and a very good chance of making a run at it this year too.

Tucker Santiago 5-9 2018 G St. Patrick 5-8 wingspan: Heart. This guy doesn’t fear anyone. You would look up and see him playing the biggest and baddest guys at the camp 1-on-1. He never backed down from anyone. Very impressive.

Daquan Smith 6-1 2018 G Holly Springs 6-1 wingspan: Welcome to the top players in the state club. He finally garnered much needed attention and still didn’t play his best this weekend. His shot is so money and his speed is lightning. Why you not get up any on them guys? He has the ability to fly but he kept it reserved. A high D1 player for the taking.

Robert Woodard 6-6 2018 G/F Columbus 7-0 wingspan: A very toned up Woodard. You thought the was a beast before, get out is his way now. He showed a great mid-range game. He wasn’t settling for the 3 every time. Seems like he is also gaining a killer instinct as well.

Robert Boyd 6-1 2017 G Holmes County Central 6-3 wingspan: I would like to first apologize to the JUCO Coaches in the state. Nobody gained more from this camp than Robert. He went in as a good JUCO player and came out the other side as a great mid-major get. The good size guard could have easily been one of the fastest guys at camp. He would be perfect for a team that likes to run and has no need for a shot clock. His outside shooting is much improved. He probably could have scored every trip down the court by shooting layups but he also got his teammates involved. Congrats Robert, you took advantage of the opportunity in front of you. Coach Patrick should be very happy right now.

Anthony Davis Jr 5-9 2017 G Shaw 5-11 wingspan Cleveland, MS: A 5-9 bulldog. I’ve seen video of him and the video on YouTube doesn’t do him any justice. Another guy with no fear and heart. He gave Robert Woodard everything he wanted in the 1-on-1 contest. He plays much bigger than his size. Every team needs a bulldog.

Kendrick Fountain 6-5 2017 G/F Holly Springs 6-8 wingspan: Another big find for the guys not familiar with MS basketball. A 6-5 shifty guard that can get in the lane when he wants. He needs a little refining but what a get he can be.

William Gaines Jr 6-5 2017 G Wayne County 6-6 wingspan Waynesboro, MS: Most people didn’t even notice the 6-5 G playing. Why not he didn’t do anything special. But I noticed him because he didn’t do anything bad either. He played very solid all weekend long. He didn’t have a bad day. He played above average the entire time. Expect great things from Gaines Jr and Wayne County this year. He’s a very good steal for someone.

Da’Quan “DQ” Gaudin 6-4 2017 F St. Martin 6-9 wingspan Biloxi, MS: He is not D1 or D2 but he did show up this weekend. He was actually everywhere this weekend. Every time I turned around he was making garbage plays. Loose balls had his name on them, a great garbage man. He was just plain everywhere.

Xaiver “Zay” Heidelberg 5-10 2017 PG Russell Christian Academy 6-1 wingspan Meridian, MS: The MS kid playing in the AL private league didn’t really have a great day Saturday. He stepped up Sunday and took advantage of playing with the MS kids. He was taking the ball to the rack with ease A very fast guard that played with true grit and toughness.

Travion Jones 6-1 2017 G/F Wilkinson County 6-3 wingspan Woodville, MS: Another one of my dads favorite players to watch. He has the total package. A garbage man that can pass and score very well .He moves very well without the ball. Very similar to an old school player that don’t have a problem scoring.

Jay Malone 5-10 2017 G Meridian 6-2 wingspan: He had probably the best play of the weekend. He shook his defender, drove around another and then hit the scoop wrap around lay-up over one the the big giants down low.

Brandon Mills 6-9 2017 F/C Mendenhall 7-0 wingspan: Hello Mills brothers. Welcome to the big leagues of high school basketball because Brandon and younger brother Bryson are now in conversations. Brandon helped back up a comment I made last season about him being one of the top big guys in the state. The 6-9 post would get a board, turn and start the break by dribbling down or hitting the open target. One of the better passing big guys around. Good mid-range shot with the ability to put the ball on the court. He changed shots and made it hard to get baskets around the rim. I heard this comment about the Mendenhall transfer. “He is the most skilled big man in the state yet he is the most unpolished gem.” He could be a huge asset to college teams with some fundamental development. Here is another guy that was unknown and made his way into the top rankings in the state just by a trip to Meridian.

Tavian “TK” Strobridge 6-1 2017 G St. Patrick 6-5 wingspan Biloxi, MS: The transfer from Memphis is going to be an early Christmas present for Coach Robinson at St. Patrick. A really good, solid guard that can get in the lane, draw contact and get baskets. A hard nosed defender that could lock down opposing teams best players. A smart ball player. He has been coached well before entering the Magnolia State.Welcome to the Sip.

Troymain Crosby 6-4 2017 G/F Laurel 6-6 wingspan: Mr. Hardware. He played above average the entire camp. Solid with no mistakes. He showed more of a PG mentality playing with the Elite guys which should be a welcomed sign to college coaches. He is a triple-double waiting to happen every time he steps on the court. Keep the awards and trophies rolling in this season.
