2017 Marshall County Hoop Fest

2017 Marshall County Hoop Fest Report

Reed Condor Gymnasium

Marshall County HS

Benton, KY

A special thanks to Mr. Dan and the entire crew that put on the Marshall County Hoop Fest and the Grind Session events. Their hospitality and friendliness go unmatched. The Hoop Fest is the best event in the country and should be a bucket list item for any basketball fan. I strongly urge any and everyone from Mississippi to give this event a try at least once. That’s all it takes and you will be hooked into making the trip every year. Another special thank you goes out to Magnolia Hoops contributor Wesley Odle. Mr. North Carolina Tar Heel worked tirelessly this week and was a big time help in covering the event. He has a special talent of befriending players, Coaches and every person he comes into contact with and he will never meet a stranger.

I was asked the question many times over the last several days from people back home, “Why are you covering that, that’s not MS?” There is multiple answers. Number one is that it is the Hoop Fest and should be seen by everyone and number two is that it turned into a MS show. Out of 19 boys games, we had 9 games with Magnolia Hoops ranked players playing in them. Four of the nine, we had the player of the game. Our guys created some major buzz while there and represented the state very well.

I hope you guys enjoy the coverage from Benton, KY. Go check out the Hoop Fest site below for all-time records, scores and information. You can also watch the games presented by Tanager Sports.

Curie Condors 1-1 (Chicago, IL) 46

Watch Columbus vs Curie

Big time win for Columbus and Coach Carlyle. He is know for his zone defense, which looked really impressive, but it was his man defense that made the difference in this game. Columbus guarded well as a team and got into them defensively. Robert Woodard II (6-7 ’18 G/F Columbus 22 pts 8 reb 3 blk 10-17 fg) played like a beast. The MS State commit impressed fans and media with his leaping ability and physical frame. Denijay Harris (6-7 ’18 G/F Columbus 13 pts 9 reb 4-7 fg 5-7 ft) played solid against higher ranked players with D1 offers showing that he can contribute on the next level also. Casey “CJ” Smith Jr (5-8 ’18 PG Columbus 8 pts 2 st) played smart and solid as well. CJ played with poise and composure against the much bigger opponents. Curie is a very tough and good team and they will have a very successful season.

Olive Branch tried everything they could to slow Zion Harmon (5-11 ’21 G Adair County #1 ’21 34 pts 7-8 ft 6 reb 5 ast 3 st 5 3’s) down but it didn’t work. Harmon scored easily with double and triple teams against some high end defenders. Harmon is getting early interest from Kansas and Kentucky.
