Friday December 15, 2017

#107 MS Booneville Blue Devils 6-7 (3A Booneville, MS) 70

#87 MS Choctaw County Chargers 5-3 (3A Ackerman, MS) 59

Booneville applied the tight, stingy defense and kept Choctaw County at bay for the win. Akeem “Keem” Kirkwood (6-2 ’18 PG Choctaw County 17 pts, 8 in the 4th qtr, 4-4 ft 11 reb 10 ast 2 st 2 blk) did everything he could to help the Chargers and he is a serious option for all the JUCO’s around. He plays with fast hands defensively and has good court vision on the offensive end. Cole McGrath (6-0 ’19 SG Booneville 18 pts 2 3’s 3 reb 5 ast 6 st) paced Booneville.

Leading the charge during the dunk fest was senior trio of Cameron “Beno” Smith (6-7 ’18 G/F Okolona 19 pts, 15 in 2nd qtr, 7 reb), Ladarrius “Moo Moo” Spears (6-6 ’18 C Okolona 12 pts 5 reb 3 blk) and Jaylon “Jay-Mo” Bailey (6-1 ’18 G Okolona 12 pts 5 reb 6 ast 5 st).

#257 MS Bruce Trojans 1-9 (2A Bruce, MS)

#48 MS North Panola Cougars 10-2 (3A Sardis, MS)

I was only able to stay until halftime of this game but it was a very close contest in the early frames. My takeaways from North Panola was size, size and more size. They come with Ankerion Gross (6-4 ’20 F North Panola), Mario Fenner (6-4 ’19 F/C North Panola) and freak athlete Kenneth Jefferson (6-5 ’19 F North Panola) to go in the starting lineup with Jamarcus Jones (6-6 ’18 F/C North Panola). Jones showed that he could play outside by knocking down a three and hitting several 18 footers. He handled the ball with confidence as well. Bruce looked to be a much improved team that was athletic across the board.

All-American City Shootout

From Tupelo HS

#65 MS Coahoma County Red Panthers 7-3 (2A Clarksdale, MS) 62

#175 MS Kemper County Wildcats 1-10 (3A DeKald, MS) 56

Coahoma used overtime to get past the Wildcats. Coach Moore was without his stud junior Markevius Phillips (6-4 ’19 G/F Coahoma County) while he attended the debutante ball. No worries, his underclassmen stepped up in the spotlight. Jai’Sheldon “Jai” Yates (6-4 ’21 C Coahoma County 15 pts, 7 in OT, 3-3 ft 12 reb 2 ast) and Bentavious “Ben” Galmore (5-10 ’20 PG Coahoma County 19 pts 3 3’s 4-4 ft 3 reb 4 ast 3 st) helped the defending 2A Champs pull off the victory. Timothy McElroy (6-4? more like 6-7 ’19 F/C Kemper County 14 pts) gave Coahoma County fits with his size and length.

#25 MS New Site Royals 14-2 (2A Booneville, MS) 55

#134 MS Itawamba AHS Indians 5-5 (4A Fulton, MS) 51

This one was Itawamba’s game to lose and a couple mental errors late in the game cost the young Indians team. Ramsey Ivy (6-1 ’18 G New Site 17 pts, 10 in 4th qtr, 6-7 ft 8 reb 6 st 2 blk) lifted New Site up in the fourth quarter for the win. Jaxon Orr (6-6 ’19 G/F Itawamba AHS 22 pts 17 reb 6 blk) had a big game for Coach Wilson. Isaiah Herndo (6-8 ’19 C Itawamba AHS) didn’t have a great stat line but he was a key for stopping the New Site offense.
