December 3-8 Report

December 3-8 Report

The stats listed are unofficial but are close to what the players accomplished on the court (mostly because I run my mouth too much and don’t pay the closest attention the entire game).

This report will cover the following games (15) or events: Choctaw County at Eupora, Charleston at Coffeeville, East Webster Shootout (Presbyterian Christian, Pontotoc, East Webster, Puckett) and Heritage Academy Shootout (Jackson Prep, Starkville Academy, Madison-Ridgeland Academy, Tishomingo County, Oak Hill, West Lowndes, Heritage Academy, Jackson Academy).

Choctaw County vs Eupora

From Eupora Elementary School

Eupora, MS

(G) Choctaw County Lady Chargers 1-5 (3A Ackerman, MS) 46

MS #182, 3A #27

Eupora Lady Eagles 0-2 (2A Eupora, MS) 24

Notes: The points are from the full game and the other stats are for 2nd-4th quarter. I found a gem in this game. La’Genesis “Gen” Johnson (6-2 ’20 F/C Choctaw County) is only a junior but she needs to be getting some serious offers. She is a good shooting lefty with size. She has handles and can run the break if needed. She can pass off the dribble or from the low post. She scores on all three levels. She is a high level shot blocker on the defensive end. Next level coaches need to see her ASAP. She is an all-A student and has D1 potential. Alaysia Weeks (5-7 ’20 G/F Choctaw County) is a very active player on the court for Choctaw County. Jabria Esters (6-1 ’20 F/C Choctaw County) has added size around the post and Ty’Liyah Alston (5-5 ’20 G Choctaw County) is a very solid guard for the Chargers. T. Towndsend (’22 PG Eupora) was a very quick and speedy guard for Eupora.

Notes: The paint combinations of Logan Murphy (6-4 ’19 C Choctaw County), Jared Bellew (6-1 ’20 F/C Choctaw County) and Israel Whitmore (6-2 ’20 F/C Choctaw County) controlled the boards to help push Choctaw County to the win. Tray Jobe (5-9 ’20 PG Choctaw County) was a shot in the arm for the Chargers as he managed the point duties. Camron Culpepper (6-1 ’19 G/F Eupora) really impressed me with his play. He knocked down a double-double and was strong on both ends of the court.

MS #244 1A #29

Notes: It took a second half push for Charleston to get going but they finally hit the gas and Coffeeville ran out of gas. Bryan Steen (6-6 ’20 F/C Charleston) has gotten much better. He was playing like an Inspector Gadget or Stretch Armstrong on the court. His arms seemed to be in every corner of the playing surface. Next level Coaches need to get on him right away. He will be a prized target next year. Quindario “Skeetie” Curry (6-0 ’19 PG Charleston) is a do-it-all point that makes his teammates better. DeAnte Prince (6-2 ’19 G/F Charleston) is a high level athlete that is committed to Ole Miss football. He filled the stat categories on the hardwood also. Tycarious Collins (6-5 ’20 C Charleston) is a big piece inside for the Tigers but he was forced to ride the pine with early foul trouble. I was actually more impressed with the Coffeeville players upside. Jadarrius “JD” Kincaide (6-3 ’20 SG Coffeeville) has huge potential. He is a deadly shooter with half court, change that, 3/4 court range. He displayed that with a 3/4 court shot near the end of one of the quarters. He nailed it like a normal jumper with ease. Jamario Edwards (5-9 ’20 G Coffeeville) plays with confidence and has that it factor to him. He’s one to keep an eye on. KeAntronie Edwards (5-11 ’22 SG Coffeville) is a strong bodied shooter with high potential also. He has ice in his veins for such a young player. LaTayvien Torrance (5-7 ’21 PG Coffeeville) is a very composed guard that plays very efficient. Coffeeville and Charleston both have chances of making noise and being headaches in their classes.

East Webster Shootout

From East Webster HS

Maben, MS

(G) Pontotoc Lady Warriors 10-0 (4A Pontotoc, MS) 61

MS #8 4A #1

Presbyterian Christian Lady Bobcats 6-5 (AAAA Hattiesburg, MS) 33

MS #94 AAAA #9

Notes: Pontotoc points are for full game but other stats are for 2nd-4th quarter only. I have to start this with the Lady Warriors. I thought they looked good early in November but they really look good now. They are dismantling just about everybody they play and they are really blowing everybody out. In fact, they are averaging 69 points per game and only giving up an average of 35. That is almost averaging doubling the opponents up in ten games. Coach Heard, why you blowing up on folks like that? It’s not his fault. How can he help make the scores look better for the opponents? Go to the bench and not play the starters as many minutes right? Wrong. He is playing the bench players big minutes and their is really no drop-off from starters to the 12th person on the bench. I’ve even seen a big improvement in the bench players with the minutes they are playing. Ok, what next? I know, put your younger kids in the game. Uh oh, can’t do that. The freshmen and sophomores are the “better” starters. He has no seniors on the team. Pontotoc is for real and the rest of 4A better take notice. Amber McCoy (5-5 ’20 F Pontotoc) is a natural scorer, passer and just overall play maker. DeeDee Shephard (’20 G Pontotoc) is a really good passer and sees the court well. Samya Brooks (5-10 ’22 C Pontotoc) and Angela Middleton (’21 F Pontotoc) provide size around the basket. Presbyterian Christian is a very good passing team. They make some of the best and crisp passes as anybody that I’ve seen.  Jillian Rhian (5-4 ’19 G Presbyterian Christian) is a very solid point. Gabby Gallup (5-4 ’19 G Presbyterian Christian) is a very good shooter. She makes the net pop when she shoots. That is one of the best sounds to hear. She also has some handles and is very shifty.

Notes: Pontotoc connected on 11-14 free-throws to help get the win. Caleb Hobson (6-0 ’20 G Pontotoc) is a late addition to the team due to football and he sure is making his mark. He came off the bench and was a bucket. He scored on multiple levels and finished very well around the basket. Cade Armstrong (6-2 ’21 F Pontotoc) is another great addition from football. He contributed a lot of hustle plays. Cannon Garner (6-3 ’21 G/F Presbyterian Christian) is a shooter with good range. Jeremiah Montgomery (6-7 ’20 F/C Presbyterian Christian) transferred from Stone and is very long, athletic and lanky.

MS #31 2A #5

East Webster Lady Wolverines 2-3 (2A Maben, MS) 42

MS #118 2A #14

Notes: I had to go take some pain medicine after this game. It was extremely physical on both ends of the court. Both teams gave it their all. Puckett came out on the high side of the wolf fight. Puckett has two of the biggest and best weapons in 2A in Rose Warren (5-9 ’20 G Puckett) and Alliyah Gray (6-1 ’20 F/C Puckett). Warren didn’t see much court time due to phantom fouls. That’s the first time I’ve ever seen anyone have a foul called on them for not getting back on defense because she was all alone on her offensive end of the court. No one to foul around her. The closest East Webster player for her to foul was actually on the bench?????? Any who, as I was robbed of getting to see her in a full game, I saw enough to realize that she is good. She has good size and handles. Gray stepped up, shouldered the load and dominated the low post.  Macey Tullos (5-5 ’19 G Puckett) and Camille Crain (5-3 ’20 G Puckett) are both solid guards. Joi Richardson (5-10 ’19 F Puckett) provides added size and physicality for the post. For East Webster, Shan Culpepper (5-9 ’22 C East Webster) and Isha Patterson (5-9 ’19 SG East Webster) both banged hard on the boards. Mariah Bell (5-9 ’19 SF East Webster) brought serious hustle and heart to the court. Whitney Winter (5-5 ’21 PG East Webster) is a nice young, lefty prospect for Coach Jon Ginn.

Notes: Jackson Prep is a very nice looking team. And I say TEAM. They passed and moved the ball with so much ease and perfection. Their patience was top notch and they are extremely fundamentally sound. They are very solid and have a deep bench. They will be a team that makes some noise in the overall. Thomas Thornton (6-2 ’19 F Jackson Prep) looked very solid in the win. A key player to keep an eye on down the road for Prep is Cam Brent (5-6 ’22 PG Jackson Prep). Cam will be a future stud.

DH Dew (’20 G MRA) had a very solid game in the losing effort. He is improving rapidly and will be one to watch for next year. Josh Hubbard (’23 G MRA) looked like a polished junior on the court. Eli Acker (6-6 ’20 F/C Heritage Academy) looked like a monster on the offensive end and he still looked like a football player on the defensive. He was a little foul happy and that reduced his minutes big time. He will be a beast when he gets back into basketball mode. Wenton Walker (6-4 ’20 G/F Jackson Academy) is a force for JA. He can shoot and has good size. Jonathan Lucas (6-5 ’21 F Jackson Academy) battled hard down low against Acker. He will be a great prospect to keep an eye on.
