4th Annual Tangle on the Trail
Presented by Pontotoc County Rotary Club
From Pontotoc HS
Pontotoc, MS
Notes: The Tangle didn’t disappoint. A few last minute schedule changes made for a bigger and better event than originally planned. 3 games were decided by one point including one in overtime. Three high level upsets. The average margin of victory was 5.5 points. The combined record of all teams coming into this event was 214-39 this season. Let that sink in. Average win-loss of 13-2. The average rank of all teams involved was #25.

Jai’sheldon “Jay” Yates (6-4 ’21 C Coahoma County) had a dominant game in the post showing his developing skills and toughness. Coahoma County showed why they are the front runners to repeat in 2A this season.

Notes: Wow, what a crazy game. First off, the crowd was at max capacity awaiting the highly anticipated battle of Starkville/Center Hill. Then the game started off kinda boring with Pontotoc taking a double digit lead early. Then it got interesting when Ingomar Coach Jonathan Ashley got a tech for sarcastically applauding a good call I think? After he lost his right to stand, he was questionably ejected for saying “You’re a better ref than that.” From my vantage point that was all I heard. Former head Coach and current assistant Chip Johnson took over for the absent Ashley. Ingomar then went on a defensive tear. They held Pontotoc scoreless for nearly 10:00 minutes ending the 1st quarter and 2nd quarter. They also went on around a 15 or 16-0 run in that span to get back in the game. Ingomar took a double-digit lead in the second half before Pontotoc started causing chaos and created about 6-8 turnovers in a row to get back in the game. During the craziness of the game, Ingomar also had three key players foul out in regulation. Two more fouled out in the overtime frame. That is finishing the game without five players and a head coach. I’m not taking anything away from Pontotoc because they are definitely good and earned the victory but this just gives credit to what Ingomar survived to stay in the game. Brandon Keys (5-8 ’19 G Ingomar) came of the bench in the closing seconds of the game and scored 3 points on the and-1 play to take it into overtime. Rock Robinson (6-5 ’21 G/F Pontotoc) waited to score his biggest two of his 21 with the game winning basket at the end. Latres Vaughn (6-3 ’20 F Pontotoc) had a solid game and looked impressive in the winning effort. Zach Shugars (6-4 ’21 F/C Ingomar) had a stretch where he couldn’t be stopped when getting the ball in his hands. Shugar Bear is developing at a nice rate. Clayton Stanford (6-3 ’20 F Ingomar) had an impressive game for Ingomar as well.

Notes: The highly anticipated game between two high ranked teams didn’t disappoint. Edzerick “Zeke” Cook (6-4 ’20 F/C Starkville) stepped up and had a very good game in the upset win. Jamarrion Brown (6-0 ’19 G Starkville) put the team on his back down the stretch and scored several key baskets to help get the win. Forte Prater (5-10 ’20 G Starkville), Coltie Young (6-2 ’21 G Starkville) and Jarmarvious Phillips (6-2 ’21 F Starkville) all made solid contributions for Starkville. Calvin Temple (6-1 ’19 PG Center Hill) got the look he wanted for the winning shot but it bounced around the rim several times before falling off. Kenneth Lewis (6-0 ’19 G Center Hill) had a good shooting night for Center Hill. Kaeden Laws (6-4 ’21 G/F Center Hill) continues to improve for the Mustangs. Kevin Henry (6-2 ’19 G/F Center Hill) provided a solid defensive effort in the loss.
