4th Annual Tangle on the Trail

Presented by Pontotoc County Rotary Club

From Pontotoc HS

Pontotoc, MS

Notes: The Tangle didn’t disappoint. A few last minute schedule changes made for a bigger and better event than originally planned. 3 games were decided by one point including one in overtime. Three high level upsets. The average margin of victory was 5.5 points. The combined record of all teams coming into this event was 214-39 this season. Let that sink in. Average win-loss of 13-2. The average rank of all teams involved was #25.

(G) Tupelo Lady Golden Wave 11-5 (6A Tupelo, MS) 55

MS #51 6A #11

Olive Branch Lady Conquistadors 16-3 (5A Olive Branch, MS) 51

MS #4 5A #1

Notes: Tupelo comes in and gets the big upset over the highly ranked Quistors. Che’mya Carouthers (5-8 ’20 G Tupelo), Jalancia Kohlheim (5-8 ’19 G Tupelo) and Jaliscia Florence (5-5 ’21 G Tupelo) contributed big time play for Tupelo in the win. Endya Buford (5-7 ’20 PG Olive Branch) is a player. She can do it all. She is a very good point that has high level handles and great passes. She has a nice shot and can also score around the basket.

Notes: Coahoma County took control of this game early and cruised for the win. Nakia Cheatham (5-10 ’20 G/F Coahoma County) came away with a big double-double and a MVP award. Taakaius Fonzy (6-0 ’19 C Coahoma County) didn’t have the best numbers after the game but was a big force on the defensive end. Ashley Spearman (5-5 ’19 PG Coahoma County), Nyriah Artis (5-5 ’22 G Coahoma County) and Calysia Phillips (5-5 ’20 G Coahoma County) navigated the court very well getting inside to dish the ball to the bigs.

Lafayette Lady Commodores 14-2 (5A Oxford, MS) 42

MS #10 5A #3

Notes: This game lived up to the hype of a top ten showdown. It even came down to a last second missed shot. Coach Bill Smith has his girls playing as they always do. They are high level and have a chance at taking home another gold ball. Azariah Buford (5-8 ’20 G Lafayette) amazes me every time I see her play.

MS #15 4A #3

Ingomar Lady Falcons 17-3 (2A New Albany, MS) 46

MS #25 2A #2

Notes: Coach Kyle Heard had the opportunity to play his alma mater in front of a crazy packed house and he made the best of it. It was a signature win for his Lady Warriors proving to the rest of the state that Pontotoc is for real and they are ready to compete for a 4A title. This game had an intensity that is hard to duplicate. It was really fun to watch.

Coahoma County showed why they are the front runners to repeat in 2A this season.

MS #38 4A #5

Ingomar Falcons 16-4 (2A New Albany, MS) 61

MS #64 2A #6

Notes: Wow, what a crazy game. First off, the crowd was at max capacity awaiting the highly anticipated battle of Starkville/Center Hill. Then the game started off kinda boring with Pontotoc taking a double digit lead early. Then it got interesting when Ingomar Coach Jonathan Ashley got a tech for sarcastically applauding a good call I think? After he lost his right to stand, he was questionably ejected for saying “You’re a better ref than that.” From my vantage point that was all I heard. Former head Coach and current assistant Chip Johnson took over for the absent Ashley. Ingomar then went on a defensive tear. They held Pontotoc scoreless for nearly 10:00 minutes ending the 1st quarter and 2nd quarter. They also went on around a 15 or 16-0 run in that span to get back in the game. Ingomar took a double-digit lead in the second half before Pontotoc started causing chaos and created about 6-8 turnovers in a row to get back in the game. During the craziness of the game, Ingomar also had three key players foul out in regulation. Two more fouled out in the overtime frame. That is finishing the game without five players and a head coach. I’m not taking anything away from Pontotoc because they are definitely good and earned the victory but this just gives credit to what Ingomar survived to stay in the game. Brandon Keys (5-8 ’19 G Ingomar) came of the bench in the closing seconds of the game and scored 3 points on the and-1 play to take it into overtime. Rock Robinson (6-5 ’21 G/F Pontotoc) waited to score his biggest two of his 21 with the game winning basket at the end. Latres Vaughn (6-3 ’20 F Pontotoc) had a solid game and looked impressive in the winning effort. Zach Shugars (6-4 ’21 F/C Ingomar) had a stretch where he couldn’t be stopped when getting the ball in his hands. Shugar Bear is developing at a nice rate. Clayton Stanford (6-3 ’20 F Ingomar) had an impressive game for Ingomar as well.

MS #4 6A #3

Center Hill Mustangs 17-1 (5A Olive Branch, MS) 62

MS #1 5A #1

Notes: The highly anticipated game between two high ranked teams didn’t disappoint. Edzerick “Zeke” Cook (6-4 ’20 F/C Starkville) stepped up and had a very good game in the upset win. Jamarrion Brown (6-0 ’19 G Starkville) put the team on his back down the stretch and scored several key baskets to help get the win. Forte Prater (5-10 ’20 G Starkville), Coltie Young (6-2 ’21 G Starkville) and Jarmarvious Phillips (6-2 ’21 F Starkville) all made solid contributions for Starkville. Calvin Temple (6-1 ’19 PG Center Hill/IUPUI) got the look he wanted for the winning shot but it bounced around the rim several times before falling off. Kenneth Lewis (6-0 ’19 G Center Hill) had a good shooting night for Center Hill. Kaeden Laws (6-4 ’21 G/F Center Hill) continues to improve for the Mustangs. Kevin Henry (6-2 ’19 G/F Center Hill) provided a solid defensive effort in the loss.
