January 14-19 Report
The stats listed are unofficial but are close to what the players accomplished on the court (mostly because I run my mouth too much and don’t pay the closest attention the entire game).

New Site vs Ingomar
From Ingomar HS
New Albany, MS
(B) Ingomar Falcons 20-4 (2A New Albany, MS) 44
MS #56 2A #4
New Site Royals 16-7 (2A New Site, MS) 42
MS #92 2A #11
Notes: This game came down to game winning free-throws by Zach Shugars (6-4 ’21 F Ingomar). Kelon Hall (6-2 ’19 G/F Ingomar) didn’t fill the stats up but he probably had the biggest impact in the game with his defensive pressure on Walker Moreland (5-11 ’20 SG New Site). Nathan Weeden (’20 F Ingomar) came off the bench and nailed some three’s to provide a scoring spark for the Falcons. Dalton Pounds (6-4 ’21 F/C New Site) looked really impressive for New Site.

Caledonia vs Pontotoc
From Pontotoc HS
Pontotoc, MS
(B) Pontotoc Warriors 19-2 (4A Pontotoc, MS) 73 OT
MS #27 4A #5
Caledonia Confederates 15-5 (4A Caledonia, MS) 70
MS #53 4A #9
Notes: Pontotoc outscored Caledonia 31-22 in the fourth quarter and overtime to get the come-from-behind win. As free-throws go for Coach Gary Griffin in the girls game it was the opposite in the boys game. His team only made 13 of 33 free-throws in the loss. Rock Robinson (6-4 ’21 G/F Pontotoc) put the Warriors on his back with his double-double. Austin Nickson (6-3 ’20 F/C Pontotoc) stepped up big down the stretch before fouling out late in overtime. Tyrin Johnson (6-3 ’19 G Caledonia) did start the game running point but was quickly moved into that position after Romeo Sanders (6-2 ’19 G Caledonia) went down with an injury. Tyrin made the best of his change and rose above for a huge game with his high motor. He needs to be looked at ASAP by next level Coaches. I watched him run point and score with ease over the summer and he showed the same in this game. His big and strong body allows him to handle contact all the way up the court or in the paint. Jarvis Leigh (6-0 ’21 G Caledonia) rose to the occasion and knocked down big shots. The lefty shooter was a nice find. Devonte Martin (6-3 ’20 F Caledonia) and Donderius Jones (6-1 ’19 G Caledonia) had solid games. Cooper McClesky (6-5 ’20 G/F Caledonia) couldn’t get his shot to fall but still contributed by getting to the rim before fouling out early in the game.

Notes: Reggie Shepherd (’20 F/C Sebastopol) was too much to handle down low and he helped Sebastopol to the win. He played strong on both ends. Trey McMullan (5-11 ’21 PG Nanih Waiya) is a solid looking young point for Nanih Waiya.

MS #79 6A #24
Tupelo Golden Wave 12-9 (6A Tupelo, MS) 70
MS #38 6A #16
Notes: This was a very interesting game not only as being a northeast Mississippi team against a gulf coast team but as a battle of very good young players. In a silent and probably unknown battle other than by myself was the battle of two top freshmen in the state. Both played pretty evenly and both stepped up big in the end of the game. Demarius Coleman (5-6 ’22 G Harrison Central) stepped up and nailed 3 free-throws to send the game into overtime and also went 2 for 2 in ot from the stripe. See the video of the free-throws by clicking here for Magnolia_hoops Twitter. Braxton Bishop (5-9 ’22 G Tupelo) had the better looking game with eye appeal however he also came up short on the game winning three in ot. As far as stats go, they had very similar games. Both these young guns played very solid but another young monster stole the show. Big Carlous Williams (6-6 ’21 F/C Harrison Central) posted a 17 pt, 18 reb night for the unanimous Player of the Game honors. He has so much potential to just overpower and out play opponents on any given night. Noe Tchuamo (6-5 ’21 F/C Harrison Central) is also a nice looking prospect to keep an eye on to see how he develops. Jacobi Moore (6-2 ’22 F Harrison Central) also caught my eye with his high motor and energy. Keondre Hampton (5-9 ’22 G Tupelo) was flirting with a double-double before fouling out in the fourth quarter. His passing continues to impress and his shiftiness is at a high level. Mason Gary (5-11 ’20 G Tupelo) had a solid game in the loss especially from the free-throw line. Josh Mitchell (6-7 ’20 F Tupelo), Keyshawn Ward (6-3 ’20 F Tupelo) and Fabian Perry (6-3 ’19 F Tupelo) also looked impressive for Tupelo. Coach Jeff Norwood had to be pleased with his team for going 29 of 38 from the free-throw line. This could easily be a playoff rematch in the future with both teams having such great young players. Coach Boo Hardy and Harrison Central are loaded with sophomores so I will eagerly be watching both programs to see how they develop the next few years.

MS #68 1A #5
Seminary Bulldogs 5-9 (2A Seminary, MS) 41
MS #196 3A #29
Notes: East Marion should be the favorite to win 1A. They have size and speed. Everyone knows about big John “Bill” Rawls (6-8 ’19 F/C East Marion), Caleb Rawls (6-5 ’21 F East Marion) and Vashon Sims (6-2 ’21 G East Marion) right? They took their whooping from Okolona last year and are primed to win it this year. I keep hearing but they don’t have guard play. Well from what I saw with guard play is that they are just fine. Flenard McLin (5-11 ’19 G East Marion) and C.J. Myers (5-5 ’20 G East Marion) both looked very solid running the point.

MS #31 6A #13
Notes: Akiva Burton (5-8 ’19 G Northeast Lauderdale) helped lead the charge of a very experienced Northeast Lauderdale team. The strong and shifty guard did a little bit of everything in the win. Christian Luvene (5-11 ’20 PG Northeast Lauderdale), Deundrick Silliman (6-2 ’19 SF Northeast Lauderdale) and Dennis Heidelberg (5-10 ’20 SF Northeast Lauderdale) all had solid games along with Burton. D’yasmond “Dee” Booker (6-3 ’19 G/F Pascagoula) had the best game I’ve ever seen him have. He was a beast crashing the boards and picked his scoring opportunities. Jayden McCorvey (6-6 ’19 G Pascagoula) looked fluid and showed his range.
