January 21-22 Report
The stats listed are unofficial but are close to what the players accomplished on the court (mostly because I run my mouth too much and don’t pay the closest attention the entire game).

Lanier MLK Tournament
From Lanier HS
Jackson, MS
(B) Piney Woods Tornadoes 9-3 (1A Piney Woods, MS) 66
MS #83 1A #6
Yazoo City Indians 6-15 (4A Yazoo City, MS) 43
MS #151 4A #30
Notes: The last time I saw Tyrek Chambers (6-1 ’19 G Piney Woods) play he dropped 40+ points against Houlka in the state tournament. That was two years ago. He has put some muscle mass on and he only dropped 39 this time. His added muscle also allowed him to rebound at a high level and while still keeping his same speed. He scores on all levels. He can pull the mid-range jumper, hit three’s, shoot high free-throw percentage, score through contact or play above the rim. He has developed into a next level body and player. He needs to me an immediate target for next level Coaches. Geronimo Warner (6-2 ’19 G/F Piney Woods) is another one that needs to be seen too. Yazoo City will be GOOD in the future as long as William Grayson (’23 PG Yazoo City), Daon Henry (’21 G Yazoo City), Jacquaris Rogers (’22 F Yazoo City) and Jaquarrius Collum (’22 F Yazoo City) continue to develop. Henry and Grayson both have very high potential.

MS #30 5A #10
Hazlehurst Indians 6-11 (3A Hazlehurst, MS) 46
MS #175 3A #26
Notes: Who is Ridgeland? They are exactly who I thought they were. They play hard, scrappy defense and are a well coached team just like they are every year. They are a little younger than I thought they were. Christian McCullum (5-10 ’21 PG Ridgeland) stepped up big in the fourth quarter to earn Player of the Game honors. Zy McDonald (5-11 ’21 G Ridgeland) had a solid game too. Toby Williams (5-9 ’20 G Hazlehurst) was a solid looking player for Hazlehurst. Hazlehurst is a feisty team that fought hard the whole time.

Greenville Hornets 13-11 (6A Greenville, MS) 49
MS #76 6A #23
Notes: Next level Coaches need to be watching Vicksburg as many times as they possibly can. They are loaded with next level guys with size. Tyron Moore (6-4 ’19 SG Vicksburg) had a good game and shot the ball well. He knocked down a couple three’s and rebounded hard. Darius Johnson (6-3 ’19 F Vicksburg) is solid and posted a double-double. Devan Kiner (6-6 ’19 G Vicksburg) was playing with a fractured wrist and still looked good. He should be a priority target for next level with his size, speed, handles and soft touch. He shot free-throws well and knocked down several three’s even with his injured hand. Jameson Norfort (6-4 ’19 G/F Vicksburg) is also very solid and he played high level defense while making all the hustle plays. Danny Washington (6-0 ’19 PG Greenville) played hard and had a solid all-around game. Shermichael Young (5-11 ’19 G Greenville) had a stretch where he couldn’t miss and it felt like he scored 20 points in a row because they were all big shots even though it only counted for 12 in the book.

MS #57 5A #17
Cleveland Central Wolves 14-10 (5A Cleveland, MS) 46
MS #66 5A #19
Notes: Marvun Arnold (6-0 ’19 G Picayune) willed his team to win scoring 12 points in the final frame to hold off Cleveland Central. He is a great point for the next level that does a little bit of everything. Kobe Jones (6-0 ’20 G Picayune) and Derai Jones (6-4 ’21 G Picayune) are two very good players on the way up. Both are really athletic and could develop into good next level targets. Leroy Cotton (6-4 ’19 PG Cleveland Central) seemed like he was the only Wolve that could score early in the game after Jamal Anderson (6-4 ’21 G/F Cleveland Central) was benched with foul trouble. Tajiri Hope (6-1 ’20 F Cleveland Central) had a solid game. Josh Kirkham (5-8 ’21 G Cleveland Central) arose to the occasion and jumped onto the scene. He has some major hops, get up, jumped and arose. Ok, never mind. He played very solid and shared the ball leading his team in assists. Kirkham, Anderson and Hope will be a fun trio to watch develop going into next season.

Brookhaven Panthers 16-5 (5A Brookhaven, MS) 62
MS #40 5A #12
Notes: Josh Lee (6-1 ’21 G Velma Jackson) dropped a smooth 27 before fouling out in the fourth quarter. He scored in a variety of a ways showing why he is one of the top ’21’s in the state. Jordan Harvey (6-3 ’21 SF Velma Jackson) is a high flying lefty that added a double-double. RD Wilson (6-0 ’21 G Velma Jackson) is another great looking prospect for the Falcons. Velma Jackson has a chance to be a power again with this solid sophomore group. Laffollette “Follie” Bogan (6-3 ’19 G Brookhaven) was a beast in the loss for Brookhaven. He scores on every level and does everything on the court. He rebounds, handles, passes, defends and does it all efficiently. He should be a priority for next level Coaches. Get to see him ASAP. Jermario Hersey (6-0 ’20 SG Brookhaven) is a heck of an athlete. He has some bounce to him and is a big piece for Brookhaven. La’darius Thrasher (5-11 ’21 PG Brookhaven) is a very nice young prospect. He is one to keep an eye on with his development.

Notes: Provine has good size and are loaded with athletes. Deion Smith (6-4 ’21 G/F Provine), De’Monte Russell (6-6 ’19 F/C Provine) and Shermontis Mitchell (6-5 ’19 F Provine) are high flyers. Mark Drone (5-10 ’22 PG Provine) and Samarion Grant (5-10 ’22 G Provine) are two young, tough guards that have bright futures ahead of them. Anthony Ratliff (6-4 ’19 G/F Terry) is explosive and had a big game for Terry. Speaking of big. It doesn’t get much bigger than Fredrick Jefferson (6-8 ’19 C Terry). He is a beast in the paint. Darien Newchurch (5-11 ’19 PG Terry) looked solid in the loss. It was also good to see Omarion Walker (6-0 ’22 G Terry) and Devin Ree (6-5 ’22 G/F Terry) again to see how the’ve progressed this season.

Earl Smith (6-3 ’19 PG Lanier) did what Earl does best. A bright spot for Lanier in the loss was hitting 28 of 38 free-throws.

Northside vs Calhoun City
From Calhoun City HS
Calhoun City, MS
(B) Calhoun City Wildcats 12-12 (2A Calhoun City, MS) 60
MS #145 2A #17
Northside Gators 7-9 (2A Shelby, MS) 52
MS #131 2A #15
Notes: Calhoun City is deep and crazy. They need the game to be as sloppy and chaotic as possible. I can see them hitting a big run and knocking some teams off down the stretch. Calhoun City also crashes the boards hard and are a very good rebounding team. Jayvian Shaw (6-2 ’20 G/F Calhoun City) has some good length on him and had a good fourth quarter in the win. Northside is very patient and methodical. They wait for the right shots offensively and strike at the right moment. Northside had the biggest and longest player on the court in Quadzavius Daugherty (6-8 ’19 C Northside). Dravon Williams (6-2 ’19 G/F Northside) had a very solid game. He has a football body and needs to be seen by next level Coaches. Laterrence Moore (6-4 ’20 F Northside) has good size and length. Northside was looking like they were going to steal a win in City until Karltavius Burrage (5-10 ’20 PG Northside) fouled out. He can control the tempo of the game and he has a solid mid-range pull-up jumper. Kamiryn Wright (6-5 ’22 F Northside) has the highest upside of any player on the court. It will be interesting to see how he develops under Coach Marlon Dorsey over the next few years.
