January 25-26 Report
The stats listed are unofficial but are close to what the players accomplished on the court (mostly because I run my mouth too much and don’t pay the closest attention the entire game). Thanks to Blake Long and his Northeast MS CC staff for doing the stats at the Hot Bed Classic.

Notes: Dakota Fernholtz (6-6 ’19 C Magnolia Heights) took over in the fourth quarter to help get the win. He had a near double-double with most stats coming in the final frame. Seth Powell (6-1 ’20 PG Magnolia Heights) and Trace Buffkin (6-3 ’20 G/F Magnolia Heights) both looked solid in the win. Breck Bolin (6-3 ’19 G Pillow Academy) has a nice mid-range pull-up jumper. Shane Houston Stephens (6-2 ’20 G Pillow Academy) had a strong game in the loss for Pillow Academy.

Notes: East Union got up early after a late night long trip to Strayhorn and they didn’t seem to have any jet lag. They used a big second and third quarter to get the big win over Kossuth. DeJuan Hubbard (’20 G East Union) had an easy time scoring on his way to a game high 15 points. Weston Mallette (’19 G East Union) had a near double-double. Colton Plunk (6-2 ’21 F/C East Union) looked really solid. Hayden Roberts (5-8 ’22 PG East Union) displayed to several media and scouts as to why he is a high end freshman in the state. Bricen Hales (6-0 ’20 F Kossuth) had a good showing in the loss.

Notes: Walker Moreland (5-11 ’20 SG New Site) continues his run as the national leading three-point shooter. He also displayed his array of skills by dropping 5 dimes and grabbing 4 boards. His basketball IQ is higher than anything that I can even say to describe it. Dalton Pounds (6-4 ’21 F/C New Site) continued his hustle play on the defensive end. Carson Fitzsimmons (5-11 ’20 G New Site), Ethan Eaton (5-11 ’21 G New Site) and Chandler Johnson (6-2 ’20 G New Site) provided a scoring spark. New Site also shot 82% from the free-throw line. Luke Willard (6-2 ’20 G/F West Union) is a very strong player for West Union.

Notes: Coach Cowboy Eric Robinson and his Power Center Academy Knights rolled into New Albany and used a big third quarter to get the win over Myrtle. Justin Border (5-6 ’20 G Power Center Academy) used his speed to earn MVP honors. The football star from Myrtle, A.I. Nugent (5-9 ’21 G Myrtle), posted a strong double-double. Christian Cummings (6-4 ’21 F/C Power Center Academy) will be one to keep an eye on with his length and size.

MS #97 4A #18
Holly Springs Hawks 14-9 (3A Holly Springs, MS) 66
MS #43 3A #3
Notes: Holly Springs looked pretty good. Coach Sylvester Kilgore is mixing up young talent with experienced players. Cori Bell (6-1 ’20 G Holly Springs) had a high level performance in the loss. Derek Fountain (6-8 ’20 G/F Holly Springs) snagged about every board that came off the glass and he also looked like he get accomplish anything he wanted on the court. Deveon Miller (6-5 ’19 F/C Holly Springs) had a very efficient double-double. Dylan King (6-2 ’21 G/F Holly Springs) looked impressive with his strong play around the basket. I said all of this to say the following….. New Albany looked better. The host school played the best I’ve seen so far this season. They looked under control and played as a playoff level team. Mitchell Shettles (6-0 ’20 G New Albany) was extremely impressive in the win with his shooting. Isaiah Ball (5-10 ’20 G New Albany) posted a strong game looking calm and collected on the court. Artaveion High (6-2 ’21 G/F New Albany) gained attention of fellow scouts with his strong play. Speaking of young players, New Albany had several play of their own. Michael Smith (6-3 ’22 G/F New Albany) and Albert McDonald (6-2 ’22 G/F New Albany) both played quality minutes for New Albany.

Plainview Bears 25-4 (3A Rainsville, AL) 69

Notes: Florence fought hard to get this win. Jaylon Forbes (6-4 ’19 G/F Florence) and Lerenzo “Trey” Fort (6-4 ’19 G Florence) both rose to the occasion to help get the win. Devin Carter (6-1 ’21 PG Florence) turned heads with his solid play. Wayne Lewis (6-2 ’19 G Florence) stepped up with a solid performance. Plainview is one of my favorite teams to watch in the country if not the favorite. Every basketball junkie should check out a Robi Coker coached team. They are fun to watch and amazed the fans seeing them for the first time. Florence Coach Darrin “DC” Chancellor walked away while exhaling a big breath, “Whoa, they are good.” Koby Tinker (6-2 ’19 G Plainview) was the high scorer in this game with 28 points. Caden Millican (6-3 ’19 F Plainview) was on his way to a triple-double. Check out these stats on the overall game. Both teams shot over 50% from the field. They shot 44% from the three-point line. Free-throw???? No missed free-throws in the game, 100%. they combined to go 12 of 12 from the charity stripe.

Notes: This was the Memphis-Brimingham battle, round 1. The 5A Alabama power never had the lead in the game until the clock hit 0:00. To see the video click here. Cameron Tucker (6-2 ’19 PG Wenonah) drained a three at the buzzer for the win. Justin Minter (6-4 ’19 G Wenonah) had a near triple-double. JaDerryus “JD” Eatmon (6-9 ’19 C Wenonah) didn’t have the best stats but he looked very solid. Schyler “Sky” Forest (6-5 ’19 G/F Lausanne) played like a beast. He knocked down a couple three’s and scored down low with ease. Hayden Ledbetter (’22 PG Lausanne) will be a player to keep an eye on as he develops.

Notes: This game wasn’t what it should’ve been without Jaykwon Walton (6-6 ’19 SG Carver). He only played 2 minutes and 59 seconds before going down with a facial injury. Best of luck to him in his recovery from the injury. He’s a great kid with a great family and I wish him the best. Jereme Robinson (’19 Carver) had a team high in points and rebounds in the loss. Sylvester Thompson (5-10 ’19 G Bartlett), Takori Rooks (6-6 ’19 F Bartlett) and Antavion “Dude” Collum (6-8 ’19 G Bartlett) were the key contributors for Bartlett.

Notes: Round two of Memphis-Birmingham. This game was one of the biggest games in the country between two national powerhouses. The two big-time national players didn’t disappoint either. Trendon Watford (6-8 ’19 F Mountain Brook) got the better of this head-to-head battle. He scored half of his points in the fourth quarter by demanding the ball and putting his team on his back. Alex Washington (6-2 ’19 G Mountain Brook) stepped up big draining the long balls. “Big Ticket” James Wiseman (7-0 ’19 F/C Memphis East) wowed fans with his long range shot, highlight reel dunks and energetic blocks. This was a heavyweight battle from beginning to end.

Notes: Zach Shugars (6-4 ’21 F Ingomar) continues to improve this season but he actually reached another level in this game. It’s like the light clicked on that says they can’t stop you. He plays hard and plays smart. Trent Bradley (5-5 ’19 G Ingoamr) stepped up big in the win for Ingomar. Jacorrieous Moore (6-2 ’19 G Bay Springs), Damien Wheaton (6-8 ’19 F/C Bay Springs) and Kevin Grimes (6-3 ’19 G Bay Springs) fought hard to keep the Bulldogs in the game. I was also impressed with the progress of Daylan Lindsey (6-3 ’20 F Bay Springs) from last season to now. Another key stats for Ingomar was the high free-throw percentage. They connected on 22 of 25 from the line.
