Beat Cancer Shootout Report

Saturday November 9, 2019

From Northwest Rankin HS

Flowood, MS

The stats listed are unofficial but are close to what the players accomplished on the court (mostly because I run my mouth too much and don’t pay the closest attention the entire game). The stats used are based on the highest numbers from what I keep, the score book has or stats listed on MaxPreps.

How do you get on the Magnolia Hoops Report? I put players on here that catch my eye or have a combined stat total of ten. Catching my eye could be leadership from the bench, winning the game or just hard play. Combined stat line of ten can be in any form. It’s doesn’t have to be points only. It can be any of the stats added up to make double-digits.

The Magnolia Hoops Player of the Game award goes to the player that affects the game the most for the winning team. The Katie Roberts Photography Senior Snapshot is the senior that either had the best stat line or one that next level coaches need to be aware of.

The Magnolia Hoops Head of the Class is the player with the best stat line by grade. The Magnolia Hoops Starting Five is the top five players with the best stat line for the entire day. The Magnolia Hoops Head Coach is the Coach that did the best job with their team. The Katie Roberts Photography Senior Squad is the top five seniors with the best stat lines. The Magnolia Hoops Best Game is either the best or most interesting game of  the day. The Magnolia Hoops Top Five Teams is the best teams on this day and not necessarily the entire year.

(B) Ridgeland Titans 3-1 (5A Ridgeland, MS) 73

Jim Hill Tigers 0-3 (5A Jackson, MS) 70

Notes: Jeff Blackmon (5-11 ’20 G Ridgeland 29 pts 4 3’s 10-15 fg 4 reb 2 ast 2 st) waited until the second half to really take it over and show why he will be a next level guard. Christian McCullum (5-10 ’21 G Ridgeland 17 pts 7-9 ft 2 reb 4 ast 5 st) continues to impress me with his solid play. Jim Hill didn’t show up early in the game but they continued to make it interesting as the game went on. Every time Ridgeland went on a run and you thought it was over they would get right back in it. Anthony “P-Nut” Womack Jr (6-1 ’21 G Jim Hill 11 pts 4 reb 9 ast) did everything he could to keep the Tigers in the game.

(B) Provine Rams 3-0 (5A Jackson, MS) 74

Newton Tigers 0-3 (2A Newton, MS) 53

Notes: Samarion Grant (5-11 ’22 G Provine 26 pts 4 3’s 1 reb 2 ast 5 st) scored at will to help the Rams get the win. However, it was the all-around play of Malik Ransom (6-5 ’20 F Provine 12 pts 8 reb 1 ast 1 st 2 blk) that earned him Player of the Game honors. Newton was very impressive at the free-throw line going 26 of 34. Newton also has a really good young nucleus to work with and will be hard to handle in 2A in a few years. Justin Thompson (6-3 ’22 G/F Newton 3 pts 5 reb), Rayvion Nettles (6-2 ’22 F Newton 7 pts 3 reb 1 ast 2 st 1 charge taken) and Kedrick Osby (6-7 ’23 G/F Newton 19 pts (13 in 4th qtr) 1 3’s 10-11 ft (6-7 ft in 4th qtr) 8 reb 2 ast 1 st) will be big pieces for the Tigers down the road.

(B) Vicksburg Gators 2-0 (5A Vicksburg, MS) 59

Terry Bulldogs 1-2 (6A Terry, MS) 57

Notes: This was a very good game from start to finish. Every time I looked up at the scoreboard I thought that Terry would’ve been winning but Vicksburg pulled out the win. They did it with big man Jaden Williams (6-7 ’21 F/C Vicksburg 2 pts 4 reb 1 ast 1 st 1 blk) sidelined with foul trouble. Rickendrick Johnson (6-1 ’20 G/F Vicksburg 17 pts 6-8 fg 7 reb 1 ast 1 st 1 charge taken) stepped up big down low in his absence when the game was on the line. Keshawn Brown (6-5 ’21 G Vicksburg 9 pts 4-6 fg 1 3’s 6 reb 2 ast 1 blk) continues to improve and develop. He has a chance at being one of the top players in his class if he keeps going in the right direction. The biggest and best surprise for me was the play of Peytin Jackson (6-0 ’20 G Vicksburg 10 pts 4-7 fg 6 reb 5 ast 1 st 1 blk). I had been hearing about him over the summer and going into the season and he was even better than what I was thinking he would be. He is a very solid and strong next level point guard. He’s kinda like an old fashioned guard that runs a team and tries to make his teammates better. He is tough and hard nosed with the ball. Next level Coaches need to see him ASAP. That seems to be a recurring theme this year is with coaches looking for toughness. AJ Warnsley (6-6 ’20 F/C Terry 9 pts 5 reb 1 st) is about as tough as it comes when your talking about bigs. He didn’t have the best stat line but stat lines don’t always tell the whole story of a persons game. He is an aggravating defender that just seems like he takes pleasure in banging around other players in the paint. Devin Ree (6-7 ’22 G/F Terry 17 pts 2 3’s 5-6 ft 12 reb 3 ast 1 st) is improving in leaps and bounds with his skill level and play. The sky is the limit for Devin if he continues to work.

(B) Brandon Bulldogs 3-2 (6A Brandon, MS) 54

Velma Jackson Falcons 2-2 (3A Camden, MS) 49

Notes: Ismail Rashid (6-5 ’22 F Brandon 19 pts 6-8 fg 5-6 ft 10 reb 3 ast 3 st) is another one of the top players in the very talented ’22 class. He easily walked away with player of the game honors with his all-around and efficient play. Joshua Lee (6-2 ’21 G Velma Jackson 28 pts 5 3’s 9-10 ft 8 reb 4 ast 5 st) had a killer performance and showed why he is right behind Ruffin for top players in the ’21 class. Velma Jackson fans hang tight. The schedule is probably the toughest in 3A so you will have some bumps in the road and losses but it’ll be worth it in March.

(B) Northwest Rankin Cougars 3-2 (6A Flowood, MS) 81

Lanier Bulldogs 1-3 (4A Jackson, MS) 52

Notes: Don’t look now but Coach Luckett has them Cougars runnin an gunnin. They play with such a high energy and really pick you up on the defensive end. Matthew Mackey (6-3 ’20 G Northwest Rankin 10 pts 2 3’s 9 reb 6 ast 1 blk 2 st) was messing around trying to get a triple-double while Michael Forbes Jr (6-3 ’20 F Northwest Rankin 15 pts 1 3’s 6-9 fg 12 reb 2 ast 2 blk 2 st 1 charge taken) put together a very solid game across the board. Both are solid candidates that need to be seen by next level coaches. LaDarion “LD” Perkins (6-3 ’22 F Northwest Rankin 19 pts 5 3’s 2 reb 3 ast 1 st) is one to watch down the road. He is so skilled and has really high potential.
