MHSAA 4A 1st Round
Schedule and Projections
Interesting 1st Round Games
Shannon (12-10) #107 travels 89 miles to Louisville (15-9) #85- I have a feeling that this is going to be a very good game.
Leake Central (14-8) #75 travels 117 miles to Caledonia (11-10) #144- Another game that grabs my attention. Senior Cooper McClesky at home against a solid Leake Central team.
North Pike (11-20) #156 travels 137 miles to Pass Christian (14-14) #130- You have to overlook North Pike’s record here. They are much better than the record indicates. I really can’t see senior Alijah Martin ending his career in the first round this year.
Kosciusko (22-5) #67 travels 97 miles to Pontotoc (21-8) #35- This might be the best first round game out of all the classes. Pontotoc at home seems like it will be too much for a very athletic and deep Kosciusko team to overcome.
New Albany (21-7) #40 travels 146 miles to Gentry (24-6) #29- New Albany has been riding high and looking good all year until a slip up in the division tournament. That slip up earns a trip to Indianola. Gentry is just too good at home.
Yazoo City (18-10) #41 travels 182 miles to Ripley (25-3) #17- Young aspiring Coaches better take notes if you go to this game. Possibly the best two Coaches in the state are faced with slip up problems too. Coach Carlyle has turned Yazoo City around faster than anyone expected and Coach Kirk has Ripley looking like contenders. I can see this game ending with both teams scoring below 30 points each. Ripley has the experience to eventually pull this one out.
Richland (19-6) #86 travels 119 miles to Stone (19-10) #106- Richland was an early season favorite of mine and I can still see his guys making the NFHS Network scramble to find Coach Marsalis a TV replacement. But a very athletic Stone team stands in the way. This will be another very tough game.
Biggest Potential Upset According to MaxPreps Rankings
I think Cooper McClesky and his Caledonia guys pull out the big home-court upset to keep rolling.
