2020 MHSAA Semifinals Report

2020 MHSAA Semifinals Report

The stats listed are unofficial but are close to what the players accomplished on the court (mostly because I run my mouth too much and don’t pay the closest attention the entire game). The stats used are based on the highest numbers from what I keep, the score book has or stats listed on MaxPreps. These stats were provided by Cspirehoops.com

How do you get on the Magnolia Hoops Report? I put players on here that catch my eye or have a combined stat total of ten. Catching my eye could be leadership from the bench, winning the game or just hard play. Combined stat line of ten can be in any form. It’s doesn’t have to be points only. It can be any of the stats added up to make double-digits.

The Magnolia Hoops Player of the Game award goes to the player that affects the game the most for the winning team. The Katie Roberts Photography Senior Snapshot is the senior that either had the best stat line or one that next level coaches need to be aware of.

The Magnolia Hoops Head of the Class is the player with the best stat line by grade. The Magnolia Hoops Starting Five is the top five players with the best stat line for the entire day. The Magnolia Hoops Head Coach is the Coach that did the best job with their team. The Katie Roberts Photography Senior Squad is the top five seniors with the best stat lines. The Magnolia Hoops Best Game is either the best or most interesting game of  the day. The Magnolia Hoops Top Five Teams is the best teams on this day and not necessarily the entire year.

MS #93, 1A #5

West Tallahatchie Choctaws 19-10 (1A Webb, MS) 55

MS #99, 1A #6

Notes: Baldwyn jumped out to a good start thanks to the great post play of Jacolby Williams (6-2 ’20 G/F Baldwyn 26 pts 11-16 fg 8 reb). He controlled the high and low post area for most of the game. The duo of Williams and Riley Hoard (6-4 ’20 F/C Baldwyn 13 pts 5-7 fg 7 reb 1 ast 4 blk 1 st) were much for the Choctaws especially when sophomore stud Roddarius Moss (6-2 ’22 G/F West Tallahatchie 14 pts 5-8 fg 4 3’s 1 reb 1 ast 2 st 0 turnovers) had to sit with foul trouble.

MS #20, 1A #1

Shaw Hawks 23-11 (1A Shaw, MS) 56

MS #58, 1A #3

Notes: Ingomar scored 29 in the fourth to get the big comeback win. Zach Shugars (6-2 ’21 G Ingomar 21 pts 15-17 ft 15 reb 5 ast 1 st) nailed several free-throws in the final frame to help get the win. It was also his basketball IQ that helped swing the game for the Falcons. As they were about to get a 5 second inbounds violation he brought it to the referees attention that Shaw had 6 players on the court. It was almost missed but it went from being a turnover to free-throws and the ball. Jamarion Walker (6-2 ’20 G Shaw 19 pts 6-12 fg 3 3’s 4-4 ft 3 reb 3 ast 1 blk 2 st) looked good in his final game as a Shaw Hawk.

Notes: Greenwood looked like they were right at home in the Big House despite the valiant effort by Jacquan McDonel (6-2 ’20 G/F Florence 29 pts 10-17 fg 4 3’s 5 reb 2 st). Greenwood has a very balanced, athletic team that is catching the state by surprise. The bulk of the team is younger guys that will be back next year too. Deandre Smith (6-2 ’22 G Greenwood 17 pts 7-13 fg 12 reb 5 ast 2 blk 3 st) earned Player of the game honors. The one prospect I was intrigued with the most didn’t have the best stat line either. Devonte Darby (6-6 ’21 G/F Greenwood 4 pts 4-6 ft 3 reb 0 turnovers) is a nice looking long prospect.

MS #9, 4A #1

Ripley Tigers 28-4 (4A Ripley, MS) 46

MS #17, 4A #2

Notes: Raymond showed why they have 3 championships behind them and look to add another this year. Jordan Marshall (6-1 ’20 G Raymond 23 pts 8-10 3 3’s 4-4 ft 2 reb 1 ast 1 blk 2 st) and the Rangers just couldn’t miss and Ripley just couldn’t hit. Jesus Ruedas (5-9 ’20 PG Ripley 26 pts 1 3’s 13-15 ft 2 reb 1 ast 3 st) tried everything he could to keep the Tigers in it but it wasn’t enough. Jesus really turned some heads with his play at the Big House. A key note in this game was that Raymond was without their leading scorer due to flu like symptoms.

MS #92, 2A #9

Notes: Bentavious “Ben” Galmore (5-7 ’20 G Coahoma County 15 pts 1 3’s 8-8 ft 10 reb 1 ast 1 st) helped push the game out of reach in the last minute of the game connecting on 6 free-throws in 6 attempts. In a game where points were at a premium, Galmore and Keshun Holly (6-4 ’20 F/C Coahoma County 10 pts 5-8 fg 13 reb 1 ast 2 blk 0 turnovers) provided just what Coach Moore needed to get his team back to the championship game. Joseph “Joe” Holloway (6-4 ’21 G/F North Forrest 11 pts 10 reb 1 ast 1 st) had a solid double-double in the loss.

MS #57, 2A #3

Philadelphia Tornadoes 24-6 (2A Philadelphia, MS) 53

MS #77, 2A #6

Notes: Let me start with this, if Martavious “Tay” Frost (6-4 ’20 F Potts Camp 20 pts 7-7 fg 11 reb 3 ast 2 blk 4 st) keeps this up Potts Camp is unbeatable. Philadelphia did a great job of shutting big Mitchell Saulsberry (6-5 ’21 G/F Potts Camp 9 pts 3-6 fg 13 reb 1 ast 1 st) down. They did their homework and shut out the Cardinals biggest weapon. But Mitch is not the only big weapon they have. Tay playing like that and then you throw the recent triple-double machine in the mix. Walter Hamilton (6-8 ’20 G/F Potts Camp 20 pts 7-9 fg 1 3’s 5-7 ft 10 reb 3 ast 11 blk 2 st) earned Player of the Game honors with the back-to-back triple-double. He only blocked 11 shots and I say only because it could’ve been 20 plus with as many as he contested or altered. One thing that goes unnoticed most games with the Cardinals is there guard play. Kedavian Faulkner (5-8 ’20 G Potts Camp 11 pts 3-4 ft 4 reb 4 ast) and JaQuives “Nuk” Muse (5-9 ’20 G Potts Camp 10 pts 1 3’s 3 reb 4 ast) provide a spark with their run outs and defensive pressure.

Notes: Center Hill was able to score early and never trailed the entire game to advance to the championship game. Kaeden Laws (6-5 ’21 G/F Center Hill 16 pts 6-12 fg 1 3’s 3-4 ft 13 reb 1 ast 4 blk) is turning into a versatile, multi-dimensional player right in front of our eyes. Notes: This was another game where a team jumped out to a lead and never let up. Starkville looked dominant in the win with a well balanced team. You can never, ever count a Coach Greg Carter coached team. Harrison Central suffered and early setback with stud junior Carlous Williams (6-6 ’21 F Harrison Central 1 reb) only getting 9 minutes in the game due to a leg injury. The Long Beach transfer, Demarius Coleman (5-7 ’22 G Harrison Central 25 pts 8-16 fg 6 3’s 3-4 ft 1 reb 1 ast) had a hot night from outside trying to keep the Red Rebels in the game.

Notes: A young and talented Murrah team will be making the Championship game a year earlier than expected. Big Joseph Dupree (6-6 ’21 F Murrah 26 pts 7-11 fg 3 3’s 9-12 ft 5 reb 1 ast 1 blk 2 st) had a huge game and it seemed like he couldn’t miss from the floor.
