2020 MHSAA State Championships Report
The MHSAA moved the championship games to the Pavilion at Ole Miss and it was a huge success. The Ole Miss media did an outstanding job with this first time event in north Mississippi. The facility and people working the event made it first class. I can’t wait to see how it advances from here on out.
The stats listed are unofficial but are close to what the players accomplished on the court (mostly because I run my mouth too much and don’t pay the closest attention the entire game). The stats used are based on the highest numbers from what I keep, the score book has or stats listed on MaxPreps. These stats were provided by Cspirehoops.com and olemissstats.com
How do you get on the Magnolia Hoops Report? I put players on here that catch my eye or have a combined stat total of ten. Catching my eye could be leadership from the bench, winning the game or just hard play. Combined stat line of ten can be in any form. It’s doesn’t have to be points only. It can be any of the stats added up to make double-digits.
The Magnolia Hoops Player of the Game award goes to the player that affects the game the most for the winning team. The Katie Roberts Photography Senior Snapshot is the senior that either had the best stat line or one that next level coaches need to be aware of.
The Magnolia Hoops Head of the Class is the player with the best stat line by grade. The Magnolia Hoops Starting Five is the top five players with the best stat line for the entire day. The Magnolia Hoops Head Coach is the Coach that did the best job with their team. The Katie Roberts Photography Senior Squad is the top five seniors with the best stat lines. The Magnolia Hoops Best Game is either the best or most interesting game of the day. The Magnolia Hoops Top Five Teams is the best teams on this day and not necessarily the entire year.

Notes: First off, congrats to Coach Jonathan Ashley and his Ingomar Falcons for earning the state championship. There is not a more deserving team than these guys. They play basketball the right way and truly are a team. Hats off to Baldwyn for actually making this a good game. They went in against the 1A giants and took them down to the wire. Baldwyn was able to hold and contain Zach Shugars (6-2 ’21 G Ingomar 4 pts 2 reb 2 ast 1 blk 2 st) in all but one play. That one play ended up being #3 on Sportscenter Top 10 and will be remembered for ages around Ingomar. Zach said, “This is what you dream of as a kid. Playing in the back yard, grabbing the ball then counting down from 5 and shooting.” His 18 foot jumper he connected was one that he practices all the time. He is deadly from the lost mid-range game. One thing that is missed by most on the historic shot is the wedge blockers going down the court. Ingomar is a school that doesn’t have football but Clayton Stanford (6-2 ’20 F Ingomar 20 pts 8-10 ft 5 reb 1 st) and Nyhiem Jones (6-6 ’20 F/C Ingomar 4 pts 2-4 fg 4 reb) would be great offensive linemen or special teams blockers. They set up a perfect wall for him to get behind them to get the shot off. Then he stepped up and nailed it. This is also a storybook ending to the season for Shugars. Over the summer he suffered a leg injury playing travel ball and he worked his tail off to get back on the court this year.
This play came behind a game-tying put back from Riley Hoard (6-4 ’20 F/C Baldwyn 13 pts 6-8 fg 7 reb 1 blk 1 st 0 turnovers) with 9 seconds to go. Andy Trollinger (6-2 ’22 G Baldwyn 2 reb 3 ast 1 blk 1 st) did a great job of limiting Shugars to 2 points and 2 rebounds up until the buzzer-beater. Another note of interest for me was the play of freshman Jamaury Marshall (5-10 ’23 G Baldwyn 6 pts 2 3’s 1 reb). He played very valuable composed minutes for the Bearcats and will be a very good player to keep an eye on going forward. Baldwyn Coach Grant Goolsby just ended his fourth season as head coach and he now has two second place finishes in the four years. That’s not Tony Tadlock status but it’s pretty dang good. Can he also get a little credit for helping create a state champion? This group of Ingomar juniors and seniors were coached by him in junior high at Ingomar.

Notes: Greenwood came into this game wanting to dethrone the reigning 4A powers. It took an extra four minutes but they finally knocked the favorites from the top. This game was very close with each team not getting a lead more than 7 points. The Bulldogs were powered by DeAndre Smith (6-2 ’22 G Greenwood 30 pts 11-19 fg 2 3’s 7 reb 4 ast 1 blk 2 st). He absolutely refused to lose and did whatever he needed to do on both ends of the court. He came into the state tournament as an unknown on the hardwood and walks out of the Pavilion on everybody’s radar similar to what he is on the football field. From what I hear, he is a high level qb on the Friday night grass. He has potential to play either sport on the next level.

Abby helped spark a 21-8 1st quarter with his big 3’s. Tarkevious Logan (6-0 ’21 Coahoma County G/F 10 pts 12 reb 3 ast 1 blk 2 st) and Keshun Holly (6-4 ’20 F/C Coahoma County 8 pts 4-7 fg 11 reb 1 blk 2 st) battled the bigger Cardinals the whole game for rebounds while Bentavious “Ben” Galmore (5-7 ’20 G Coahoma County 17 pts 6-12 fg 1 3’s 4-4 ft 4 reb 4 ast 2 st) helped control the 4th quarter.

Notes: This was supposed to be the big game but it ended up being the not so great game. Callaway came to take the Gold Ball back to Beasley Road and they didn’t let up. They proved to be the most dominant team in Mississippi by finishing the season as the only team not to lose to a Mississippi team. Big Johnathan “John” Crumley (6-7 ’20 C Callaway 17 pts 8-11 fg 13 reb) had his best game of the season on this big stage while Daeshun Ruffin (5-10 ’21 G Callaway 33 pts 4 3’s 13-14 ft 6 reb 4 ast 1 blk 6 st 0 turnovers) was doing Daeshun things. His lightning quick explosion was in full affect as he wowed the crowd. One of his biggest stats was the 0 turnovers while doing all this work. Decorian “DeDe” Payton (6-6 ’21 F/C Center Hill 28 pts 12-16 fg 9 reb 2 st) played his last high school game and he did everything he could for the Mustangs.

Notes: St. Andrew’s was a team that got tired of being counted out. Coach Cronin and his guys controlled the pace of the game and was money from the free-throw line. They shot 83% connecting on 20 of them to help control the game. Rashad Bolden (6-0 ’21 PG St. Andrew’s 25 pts 3 3’s 12-12 ft 6 reb 1 ast 2 st 0 turnovers) did his part before fouling out early. He smashed 12 of 12 from the charity stripe while not committing a turnover. Noel Wiggs (6-3 ’20 C St. Andrew’s 12 pts 4-4 fg 4-6 ft 7 reb 3 st) played way above his size to help Bolden out against the much more athletic Falcons. The Saints also used this game to avenge to earlier losses to Velma Jackson. Sometimes it’s better to win the war instead of winning a battle. For Velma, Jordan Harvey (6-3 ’21 G/F Velma Jackson 12 pts 6 reb 1 blk 2 st) battled hard to help them in the comeback attempt.

MS #9, 6A #6
Notes: The last time I saw Starkville, Coach Carter had a bunch of little guards. They looked like they just came out of Space Jam when they took Craddock Court at The Pavilion. They jumped out to a large lead then Murrah fought back. Murrah finally took the lead late in the game then Coltie Young (6-3 ’21 G Starkville 10 pts 3 3’s 1 reb 2 ast 2 st) stepped up with back-to-back long three’s to grab the lead back. Trey Jackson (6-2 ’20 G Starkville 16 pts 7-9 fg 2 3’s 5 reb 1 ast 1 st 0 turnovers) looked really good in the Championship game.
