Booneville Christmas Classic Recap 12-30-22

Friday December 30, 2022

From Booneville HS

Booneville, MS

(G) Kossuth Lady Aggies 9-3 (3A Kossuth, MS) 56

Pine Grove Lady Panthers 2-11 (2A Ripley, MS) 20

Notes: Coach Rick Hodum has his Lady Aggies running a very interesting offense and playing with a unique offensive strategy. They put up a large number of three’s connecting on 14 of them in this contest. He has them running a fun offense to watch. Anna Greene (5-6 ’23 G Kossuth 19 pts 6 3’s 2 reb 4 ast) knocked 6 of the three’s down on her way to player of the game honors. Dacy Kate Marsh (5-2 ’23 G Kossuth 15 pts 5 3’s 1 reb 1 ast 2 st) added 5 three’s. Jessica Hughes (5-7 ’23 G/F Kossuth 6 pts 2 3’s 10 reb 1 ast 1 st) pulled down double-digit boards and also added a couple trey balls. Bella Fryar (’26 F Pine Grove 6 pts 7 reb 2 st) was the top stat leader for a young Pine Grove team.

(B) West Point Green Wave 6-3 (5A West Point, MS) 67

Pine Grove Panthers 11-6 (2A Ripley, MS) 45

Notes: West Point started off the game on fire and never looked back. Daveon Willis (’23 G/F West Point 15 pts (11 in 1st qtr) 3 3’s 1 reb 2 ast) was one of the key first quarter forces with his 11 points. Elijah Young (6-4 ’23 G/F West Point 15 pts 1 three 2-2 ft 4 reb 7 ast 2 blk 4 st) filled the stat sheet up to earn Player of the Game honors. Michael “MJ” Smith (6-6 ’23 F/C West Point 13 pts 1 three 2 reb 6 blk) also looked really impressive in the win. He is a must see for next level coaches. This West Point team looked very impressive and they played very patiently on the offensive end trying to get the right shot on every possession. Pine Grove didn’t look bad in the loss either. Don’t count the Grovers out this year in 2A. They will be a contender.

(G) Booneville Lady Blue Devils 15-0 (3A Booneville, MS) 46

Biggersville Lady Lions 10-3 (1A Corinth, MS) 39

Notes: This game was very physical and intense. The atmosphere was championship like and both teams responded like repeat champs and current contenders. Both of these teams are very evenly matched with guards and bigs. The most anticipated match-up was Niyah Cook (6-1 ’25 C Booneville 8 pts 7 reb 2 ast 3 blk 1 st) and Asia Stafford (6-1 ’23 F Biggersville 21 pts 16 reb 1 ast 1 st). The two bigs did not disappoint with the senior getting the best of the younger post player. It was the guard play of Ava Kate Smith (5-7 ’25 G Booneville 20 pts 1 three 4 reb 5 st) that stole the show and the ball a lot on her way to Player of the Game honors. Hallie Burns (5-5 ’23 G/F Booneville 13 pts 2 3’s 5 reb 3 ast 2 st) had a solid performance for the Lady Blue Devils in the win also. This Booneville team has so many weapons including the Johnson trio of Kaylee Johnson (5-9 ’24 SG), Kylee Johnson (5-5 ’25 G) and Kellan Johnson (5-7 ’27 G) that will be with Smith and Cook the next several years.

Don’t let the 10-3 record of Biggersville fool you. The combined record for teams that Biggersville has lost games against is 47-6. They will easily be right back in the 1A mix again with all of the senior experience.

(B) Booneville Blue Devils 13-2 (3A Booneville, MS) 60

Biggersville Lions 8-1 (1A Corinth, MS) 39

Notes: Another championship level game from repeat champs and current contenders. Kedrick Simmons (6-6 ’25 G Booneville 27 pts (11 in 1st qtr) 4 3’s 3-4 ft 4 reb 1 ast 2 st) had a solid performance with Mississippi State Coach George Brooks watching. Simmons had spurts where he was untouchable on the court to earn the Player of the Game award. James Dukes (6-6 ’23 F Booneville 9 pts 5-6 ft 13 reb 5 blk) was right there in the running with Simmons for the award with his defensive effort and rebounding. The size and length of Booneville really bothered the Lions. At one point Coach Michael Smith had a line-up of a guard, 6-3 G Nunley, 6-5 F Trenton Rocker (6-5 ’23 F Booneville 4 pts 4 reb 1 st), 6-6 G Simmons and 6-6 F Dukes. This was the group that really pulled away from Biggersville. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Booneville has another Dukes to keep an eye on. Elijah Dukes (6-6 ’26 G Booneville) was able to get on the floor and get some minutes and he might be the best Dukes yet. But I’m also hearing there is one or two more in the junior high system that may be better.

Biggersville might’ve been on the wrong end of this game but that won’t happen many times this year. This team is loaded and should easily make another run in 1A.
