New Albany Kiwanis Hotbed Classic Recap 1-28-23

Saturday January 28, 2023

From Historic Memorial Gym

New Albany, MS

(B) East Union Urchins 10-14 (2A Blue Springs, MS) 58

Thrasher Rebels 5-14 (1A Booneville, MS) 52

Notes: You usually start the Hot Bed with a big old pile of hot cakes. This Hot Bed started with some hot hands. Clayton Russell (’25 G East Union 19 pts 7-12 fg 5-8 3’s 2 reb 6 ast 4 st) had the hot hand in the opening game for the Urchins. Brandon McGaughy (’23 G Thrasher 17 pts 6-10 fg 5-7 3’s 5 reb 2 ast 1 st) was also hot in the early morning contest for the Rebels. Jonathan Grove (’25 G/F Thrasher 9 pts 4-5 fg 1-2 3’s 10 reb 1 ast 1 blk 6 st) is an interesting prospect for the powder blue wearing Rebels.

Notes: The battle of the Hawks ended up with Holly High Flying high in the win. Colain Brown (’24 F Holly Springs 15 pts 7-10 fg 1 three 3 reb 2 ast 1 blk 4 st) put on a dunk show for the fans. Jabez Jones (6-2 ’23 F Holly Springs 14 pts 4-6 fg 4-5 3’s 2-2 ft 2 reb 1 ast 1 st) was very efficient in the win. Wes Stanton (’27 Myrtle 4 pts 6 reb 2 ast 2 st) made the rare 8th grade appearance for Myrtle.

(B) New Albany Bulldogs 21-5 (4A New Albany, MS) 80

Nettleton Tigers 20-4 (3A Nettleton, MS) 70

Notes: I had this game circled as a must see and they did not let me down. I knew it would be an up-and-down, fast-paced game. Braden Shettles (6-2 ’26 G New Albany 25 pts 11-17 fg 2 3’s 12 reb 4 ast 1 blk 3 st) plays more like a seasoned veteran than a freshman. He’s also not afraid to throw one down in traffic. This might not be the year for New Albany but mark it down, they are coming to Jackson. Cayden Howell (6-3 ’24 G New Albany 18 pts 1 three 7-8 ft 6 reb 7 ast 2 blk 2 st) is a true point with great court vision. Emanuel Tucker (6-6 ’26 F New Albany 7 pts 3-3 fg 6 reb 1 blk) and Issac Gilbert (6-5 ’25 F New Albany 5 reb 2 blk 1 st) will man the post for the Bulldogs over the next few years. Decorion Hardin (6-0 ’26 G New Albany 7 pts 2-4 fg 1 three 2-2 ft 2 reb 1 ast) is a crazy impressive athlete. His elevation is off the charts when rebounding and contesting shots.

This Nettleton team also has a shot at making some noise this year in 3A. Zavian Dilworth (5-10 ’23 G Nettleton 18 pts 7 reb 12 ast 2 st) had a massive near triple-double in the loss. Jamarion Ball (6-3 ’23 G/F Nettleton 14 pts 5-10 fg 4-8 3’s 8 reb 1 ast 2 st) has good range and length. Jayden Carruthers (6-4 ’24 F/C Nettleton 19 pts 6-11 fg 1-2 3’s 6-8 ft 4 reb 1 ast 2 blk 2 st) is a nice big for the Tigers.

(B) Jasper Vikings 20-7 (5A Jasper, AL) 78

West Union Eagles 19-5 (1A Myrtle, MS) 45

Notes: When you 1A teams see this score don’t overthink it. West Union stepped out and played a monster Jasper team. Coach Burns has a really nice team across the state line this year. JB Beaty (6-0 ’23 G Jasper 20 pts 7-10 fg 6-9 3’s 3 ast 2 st) shot the ball really well in the win. West Union players and fans, do not get down after this loss. You will not see a team like this in 1A this year.

(B) Buckhorn Bucks 18-7 (6A New Market, AL) 61

Neshoba Central Rockets 20-6 (5A Philadelphia, MS) 51

Notes: I was afraid when Coach Childs stepped in as a replacement that this game might’ve been an ugly game. I was thinking, I hope he don’t get mad at me for throwing him to the wolves last minute but to my surprise it was a really good game. I knew what to expect out of his team with his coaching style but they were much better than I expected. This Rockets team can make some noise in 5A this year. He had the daunting task of going against the full-grown, man-child Caleb Holt (6-6 ’26 G Buckhorn 21 pts 1 three 8-10 ft 10 reb 6 ast 6 st). Holt had a really good day and impressed just about every single person in attendance. Buckhorn has a really good team and will be a force for the next several years.

This Neshoba team is pretty even across the board with quality role players in place. One player that really stood out to me and I am now a big fan of is Jordan Ben (5-7 ’24 G Neshoba Central 12 pts 5-9 fg 2 reb 6 ast 5 st). He is fearless and plays with a massive amount of confidence. I loved watching him play and as he gets polished over the next year could be a very viable next level option.

Olive Branch Conquistadors 17-4 (6A Olive Branch, MS) 66

Notes: Another fun and fast-paced game. This game was tied 5 times and we had 13 lead changes. Seth Grandberry (6-0 ’23 G Lausanne 31 pts 13-21 fg 2-3 3’s 4 reb 2 ast 4 st) was dropping buckets for the Linx in the win. Jaylyn Tyler (6-0 ’24 G Olive Branch 17 pts 3-6 3’s 9 reb 8 ast 1 blk 2 st) continued to have a wonderful season with the near triple-double.

Tupelo Golden Wave 14-8 (6A Tupelo, MS) 56

Notes: Rossview had a big second quarter to get a 19 point lead. Tupelo made a big push in the second half but the comeback fell short. Cam Ward (6-2 ’24 G Rossview 17 pts 3 3’s 2-2 ft 7 reb 4 ast), Chanx Martin (6-6 ’24 PF Rossview 13 pts 5-10 fg 1 three 2-2 ft 5 reb 3 ast 4 blk) and Jacob Edwards (6-2 ’24 G/F Rossview 11 pts 14 reb) had big games in the win. (B) Plainview Bears 24-4 (3A Rainsville, AL) 57

Desoto Central Jaguars 12-10 (6A Southaven, MS) 50

Notes: This is another game that was way closer than the score appears. In fact, the final score was the largest lead of the game for either team. Plainview is one of my favorite teams in the country and they never fail to put on a good show. Luke Smith (6-4 ’23 G/F Plainview 24 pts 9-18 fg 3-6 3’s 3-4 ft 6 reb 3 ast) provided a spark for the Bears in this game. Jonah Williams (5-11 ’23 G Plainview 12 pts 4-6 fg 4-6 3’s) passed the 2,000 point milestone in this game. I can remember watching him back as an 8th grader thinking he was going to be tough and he has lived up to the hype.

I know Desoto Central doesn’t have the best record but I called them as a team to watch out for at the Bigg Classic. I’m still sticking with that because they are starting to get some quality wins. This might not be the year of the Jags but they are going to be good the next few years. And if you guys don’t remember, I was the guy who called Lake Cormorant and that Olive Branch team before they hit the stride. Yeah I think both of them ended up in Jackson at one point or another. Bob Dickson Jr (6-7 ’25 C Desoto Central 8 pts 3-6 fg 2-2 ft 15 reb 1 ast 1 blk 2 st) is going to be a highly sought after big when he gets fully developed.

(B) Ingomar Falcons 18-10 (1A New Albany, MS) 73

Tunica Academy Blue Devils 0-4 (MAIS 3A Tunica, MS) 56

Notes: I loved seeing this game. Coach Troy Howell having the opportunity to coach against his alma mater in such a prestigious event. He is the true definition of Ingomar. He has been very successful and he loves his Union county folks. Troy is one of the best guys you will ever meet and I could see the hurt in Coach Ashley from beating a friend when his team defeated the Blue Devils. Jack Denton (6-1 ’25 C Ingomar 24 pts 9-15 fg 9 reb 1 ast 1 st) got big against Tunica and he banged his way to a great game. Almonzo Payne (’23 G Tunica Academy 30 pts 13-21 fg 3-6 3’s 3 reb 1 blk 6 st) did everything he could to try and get his Coach the victory.
