Tuesday February 14, 2023

Saltillo, MS

(B) Saltillo Tigers 20-9 (5A Saltillo, MS) 59

Ridgeland Titans 17-13 (5A Ridgeland, MS) 54

Notes: Saltillo jumped out with an early five point lead and would be able to cling to that margin throughout the game. The Tigers would push it out to a ten point deficit then the Titans would cut it back to two or three. Jack Adams (5-10 ’25 SG Saltillo 11 pts 3 3’s 1 reb 1 ast) started the game on fire connecting on three early 3’s and then knocked down a couple big free-throws late in the fourth quarter. Gunner Wesson (6-2 ’24 G Saltillo 11 pts 2 3’s 5-6 ft 4 reb 2 ast 1 st 2 charges taken) was also clutch in the final frame going 4-4 from the charity stripe. Tre Terrell (5-8 ’25 Saltillo G 3 pts 1 reb 2 ast 1 st) stepped up and knocked down a couple free-throws in the fourth quarter. Matthew Armstrong (6-3 ’23 F Saltillo 10 pts 8 reb 1 ast 4 blk 2 st 1 charge taken) had a crucial block in the final seconds on a three point attempt from the Titans. However, the biggest story of the night came from the biggest guy on the court. Demetrius Duffy (6-6 ’25 C Saltillo 22 pts 19 reb 2 blk 1 st) finished the night with a near twenty-twenty performance. His played with a soft touch on the offensive end making shots from crazy angles around the rim. Every time he rebounded the ball it seemed like he was about to pop it. Saltillo advances to play at Provine on Saturday night.

Ridgeland put an impressive trio on the court with Montravius Skinner (6-0 ’23 G Ridgeland 18 pts 6 reb 2 ast 3 st), Amare Holmes (6-3 ’23 G Saltillo 18 pts 2 3’s 4-5 ft 2 reb 1 ast 2 blk 1 charge taken) and Phil Nelson (6-1 ’25 G Ridgeland 8 pts 2-2 ft 4 reb 5 ast 3 st). Skinner and Nelson seemed to have a special connection going early on swapping baskets and assists with each other. Holmes showed the ability to be able to stroke the long ball with a couple three’s as well as finish above the rim. He caught a nice and-1 body in the second half and also was on the receiving end of a nice drawn up alley late in the fourth quarter.
