Lighthouse Classic Day 1 Video Highlights

Special thanks go out to Gerald Snider, Billy Roberts, Chris Street, Cole Street and Gabe Bennett for videoing, keeping stats and contributing to this report.

Notes

Alcorn Central Bears

Carter Hughes 5-10 2020 G 17 pts, 3 3’s: Freshman lead the team in scoring hitting several threes.

Houlka Wildcats

Ma’Darius Hobson 6-2 2018 G/F 19 pts, 16 reb, 3 ast, 3 st: The MVP tied a Lighthouse Classic record with his 16 rebounds. Solid play. Great passing and scoring.

Smoody Turner 5-8 2018 G 14 pts, 6 reb, 2 3’s, 6 ast, 2 st: Smoody was all over the place defensively. He ran the point well passing and getting the ball down the court on the breaks.

Smoody Turner Video Highlights

Dashun Berry 6-0 2020 G 10 pts, 5 reb: This guy is on the way up. He can play and you can tell he is continuing to get comfortable.

Ripley Tigers

Defense was everywhere. Way to many hands in the air and bodies on the ground to handle. Coach Kirk has got his guys playing. Ripley was also missing their starting PG, Iverson Smith 5-10 2018 G.

Dewayne Cox 6-1 2017 G 21 pts, 9-15 fg, 2 3’s, 4 reb, 8 ast, 8 st: He done messed around and stole a Lighthouse Classic record. No that was supposed to say he done messed around and bout got a triple-double. Well, he did both. He did really good for himself in front of the college Coaches.

Asa Howard 6-1 2020 F 10 pts, 5-6 fg: I kept hearing last season about the Ripley 8th grade team. Howard and 5-9 2020 G Jesus Ruedas will be a good combo to keep an eye on in he future.

Biggersville Lions

Biggersville just couldn’t get anything going. The highlight of their night was a put back dunk by 6-7 2017 F Greg Robinson.

Columbus Falcons

Robert Woodard 6-6 2018 G 26 pts, 9-16 fg, 3 3’s, 10 reb, 2 blk, 2 st: Robert had a really solid game rebounding, scoring and playing efficiently. Robert is a beast and should continue to dominate the rest of the season.

Velma Jackson Falcons

Velma Jackson was just kinda there but still took care of Spain Park easily. 12 steals and a free throw percentage of 85% helped with that task.

Robert Kendrick 6-2 2018 G 7 pts, 5 reb, 5 ast, 3 st: A solid stat line across the board for Velma Jackson.

New Hope Trojans

Coach McBrayer and his guys made the best of the opportunity in front of them and they showed up on the big stage.

JaQuante Bell 6-5 2017 F 11 pts, 8 reb, 3 st: It’s hard to tell who had the best performance of the day for New Hope. JaQuante has to be right in the mix. His stat line was not overwhelming but his play was. He went right after the highly ranked 7-0 footer on both ends. He used his bullish body frame to fend off and get shots around the basket to fall.

Andrew Junkin 7-0 2018 C 4 pts: Playing time was limited due to foul trouble but he didn’t back down from any challenges while he was on the court.

Terryonte Thomas 6-4 2017 G 22 pts, 4 3’s, 7 reb, 4 ast: A very solid stat line. He shot outside well, mid range pull ups and got to the basket. The powerful guard didn’t have any problems getting a shot off when he wanted to.

Tyler Stevenson 6-7 2018 G 15 pts, 6-9 fg, 9 reb, 5 ast, 4 blk: Now that’s a stat line right there. He played inside and out on the defensive end. He worked very well on the offensive end. Big time on the rise in the state this year. Coaches better not sleep on him and let him slip by.

Corinth Warriors

It’s early for the young Warriors. They are going to be special in the future.

Axavius “Tada” Stricklen 6-0 2018 G 19 pts, 10 reb, 2 st: Good showing for Tada even though he shot bad. He can creature a shot whenever he wants to.

Tada Stricklen Video Highlights

Forest Hill Patriots

The Patriots are pretty good. They are a very solid team that not only plays in Jackson but should have the opportunity to play in the Big House in Jackson this year.

Ladarius Marshall 6-7 2018 F 20 pts, 8-9 fg, 4-5 fg, 7 reb, 7 blk: Have you ever heard of Big Foot. I’m going to compare Marshall to Big Foot (not the size but the myth). I’ve heard all the stories of how good he was and “he does this and he does that.” I’ve watched him a handful of times over the last few years and I just didn’t see what everyone was talking about. Yeah, he was big and freakishly athletic but that was it. Well that is no longer the story. I seen Big Foot (the myth). He balled all out in Corinth and I firmly agree that he is one of the best in the state now. Let’s break his stats down. 8-9 fg and 4-5 ft. He only missed 2 shots the entire night on his way to scoring 20 points. It is kinda easy for him to do that when he is breaking the rim or backboard with every shot. 7 boards is so so. 7 blocks is tough, and these were all ball flattening blocks too. I will no longer doubt the myth of Ladarius Marshall being a high D1 guy.

Arthur Johnson 6-2 2017 G 13 pts, 5-6 ft, 10 reb, 4 ast, 3 st: He was all over the place. He got the bucket and scored or dished. He was cleaning the boards and he had a hand on so many passes and loose balls. His stat line was a top 5 most days.

Out of State Guys

Carlos Marshall 6-6 2017 G Southwind TN 34 pts, 13-23 fg, 4 3’s, 4-5 ft, 4 reb, 6 st: The UT Martin committ is going to make them very happy. They got a steal with him.

John Petty 6-7 2017 G Jemison 13 pts, 4 reb, 5 ast: One of the best, most talented high school players I’ve seen since Andrew Wiggins. If he can get it all together, he can be a multiple All-Star.

John Petty Video Highlights

Tyler Harris 5-9 2018 PG Cordova 29 pts, 10-16 fg, 9-13 3’s, 5 reb, 4 ast: Some might think this was a big game for him. It’s not, he’s been doing this all year. He’s too small for high level D1? Nope is the answer to that. He can flat out play and he will continue to do so the rest of the season.

Mitchell Robinson 7-0 2017 F/C Chalmette 24 pts, 3 3’s, 17 reb, 3 ast, 3 blk, 2 st: Stat line of the day. He is a one and done. He was very fun to watch.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander 6-5 2017 PG Hamilton Heights TN 19 pts, 9-10 ft, 6 ast, 2 blk, 4 st: The former Florida committ has gotten way better since last year. His improvement is being rewarded by a blue blood. He will be a solid player for Coach Cal the next few years.

Nickell Alexander-Walker 6-5 2017 G Hamilton Heights 10 pts, 2 3’s, 5 reb, 4 ast: Shai’s cousin has done the same thing he has, improved greatly since last year. Virginia Tech is getting a steal with him.

Matur Maker 6-9 2017 PG Tech Academy 20 pts, 7 reb, 3 blk: Another pro player in the making.

Matur Maker Video Highlights

Makur Maker 6-11 2020 F Tech Academy 11 pts, 6 reb, 3 blk, 2 st: Another pro on the way.
