Lighthouse Thanksgiving Classic

From Corinth HS

Corinth, MS

(B) Falkner Eagles 4-3 (1A Falkner, MS) 59

Kossuth Aggies 2-4 (3A Kossuth, MS) 34

Notes: Kossuth did a really good job of slowing Cameron Smith (6-5 ’21 G/F Falkner) down but it wasn’t enough for the win. Daylon Crum (6-1 ’21 SG Falkner) and Chauncey Jackson (6-2 ’20 F Falkner) both stepped up and had good games to lead the Eagles to victory.

Notes: I continue to be impressed with Prosper Obidiebube (6-8 ’19 F Aspire Academy). He is high academic, highly athletic and plays with a high motor.

(B) Hamilton Heights Hawks 5-1 ( Chattanooga, TN) 89

Wesley Christian Circuit Riders 6-2 (Allen, KY) 57

Notes: The Hamilton Heights duo of Jordan Rawls (6-2 ’20 G Hamilton Heights) and Samson Ruzhentsev (6-7 ’20 G/F Hamilton Heights) were really impressive for the Hawks. Samson should be a top 40 player in the country. He can shoot the ball really well and is very athletic. Rawls is like the do-it-all unsung hero that makes Hamilton Heights go.

(B) Olive Branch Conquistadors 5-1 (5A Olive Branch, MS) 70

Wenonah Dragons 4-1 (5A Birmingham, AL) 57

Notes: When Wenonah is your easiest opponent that week you are playing a hard schedule. Olive Branch played the Alabama power sandwiched in between nationally ranked Memphis East and Mountain Brook. It was a very sloppy showing for OB but they still pulled away with a convincing victory. Cameron “Mook” Matthews (6-6 ’20 F Olive Branch), Wes Taylor (5-11 ’20 G Olive Branch), DJ Jeffries (6-7 ’19 G Olive Branch) and CJ Owens (5-11 ’19 G Olive Branch) were the bright spots for OB.

(B) Florence Eagles 5-1 (4A Florence, MS) 76

Lee Generals 3-1 (6A Huntsville, AL) 57

Notes: It was the Jaylen Forbes (6-4 ’19 SG Florence) show in front of his future head Coach Avery Johnson. He showed that he can score in many different ways. Florence is also going to be in good shape in the future with Devin Carter (5-10 ’21 PG Florence) and Jalon McNair (6-5 ’22 C Florence). Carter came in off the bench to provide a spark and made the best of his opportunities. McNair was able to grind his way to a solid outing also.

(B) Memphis East Mustangs 4-0 (AAA Memphis, TN) 69

Callaway Chargers 3-1 (5A Jackson, MS) 54

Notes: The score doesn’t indicate it but this was a heavyweight fight. Callaway played East as hard as they could but the “Big Ticket” James Wiseman (7-0 ’19 C Memphis East) took over in the fourth quarter. Daeshun Ruffin (5-11 ’21 G Callaway) became the new crowd pleaser for the ones who didn’t know of him nationally. He should be climbing up the national rankings really soon. He gained major respect from all in attendance with his electrifying play. Kevion Hunt (5-9 ’22 PG Callaway) gained major respect from me with his play in a big-time event. The Hunt/Ruffin duo will be fun to watch over the next few years.

Notes: This was a battle of two heavyweights here too. Bearden came into the fight with a limp but went blow-for-blow with the nationally ranked Spartans.
