January 28-February 2 Report
The stats listed are unofficial but are close to what the players accomplished on the court (mostly because I run my mouth too much and don’t pay the closest attention the entire game).

Water Valley vs North Panola
From North Panola HS
Sardis, MS
(B) North Panola Cougars 12-7 (3A Sardis, MS) 60
MS #106 3A #16
Water Valley Blue Devils 9-7 (3A Water Valley, MS) 57
MS #116 3A #17
Notes: Cedquavious “DaeDae” Hunter (5-10 ’22 G North Panola) was silent in the first half but he made some noise in the second. The highly touted freshman showed why he is one of the best in the state by completely taking the game over. He scored on every and all levels in the 18 point come-from-behind win. Marquez “Quez” Caldwell (6-6 ’19 F/C Water Valley) has some range and has nice length. Quaterrius Tolbert (6-3 ’19 G Water Valley) looks and plays bigger than what it says he is. He looks 6-5ish. He can handle, shoot and is a ball-hawk on defense. He plays above the rim and could have a future in next level basketball if he decides not to go with football. He is a freak athlete that can do just about whatever he wants to.

Northeast MS CC 5 County Junior High Tournament
From Northeast MS Community College
Booneville, MS
(B) Kossuth (Kossuth, MS) 52
Pine Grove (Ripley, MS) 26
Notes: Kossuth has a solid looking team. Pine Grove is playing their best two 8th graders up on the high school level so that was a big difference in the game.
Kossuth (traveled 19 miles) 52
Pine Grove (traveled 18 miles) 26
(B) Baldwyn (Baldwyn, MS) 52
Tishomingo (Tishomingo, MS) 35
Notes: Tishomingo is a very good team with several solid players. They have a little bit of size, some shooters and some good guards. It was a tied game at the half before the pressure and depth of Baldwyn got to them. Jamauary Marshall (5-8 ’23 PG Baldwyn) had me speechless with his play. Watching him was like watching a perfect image of the late and really great Joseph “P-Jack” Marshall. I know this because I was blessed to be able to sit on the bench and watch him play for four years. He was a legend and his son looks exactly like him on the court. His moves, his mannerisms and his play brought me back to the mid 90’s. It’s going to be my pleasure to watch him play over the next several years. One of the biggest differences for Baldwyn was the play of Cosnic Price (6-3 ’23 C Baldwyn). He rebounded just about every ball that came off the glass and scored several baskets around the paint.
Baldwyn (traveled 13 miles) 52
Tishomingo (traveled 23 miles) 35
(B) New Albany (New Albany, MS) 42
Corinth (Corinth, MS) 31
Notes: Corinth had the best player on the court in Chris Rogers (6-1 ’23 G/F Corinth). He’s long, lanky and athletic. He has a chance to be a future stud for the Warriors. However, New Albany had the will to not lose. They were led by a couple 7th grades guards that just refused to lose.

Union vs Philadelphia
From Philadelphia HS
Philadelphia, MS
(B) Philadelphia Tornadoes 18-7 (2A Philadelphia, MS) 73
MS #80 2A #7
Union Yellowjackets 19-4 (2A Union, MS) 25
MS #120 2A #14
Notes: The last time I watched Philadelphia play they were without Asher Morgan (6-4 ’20 G Philadelphia). Adding him makes them look really good. He’s a utility guy that does everything from playing inside out to crashing boards. He passes well and has good size to go with some handles. Jacobi York (6-3 ’19 SG Philadelphia) and Jordan Hill (6-4 ’20 G Philadelphia) are two lefty shooter with size, length and extended range. If they are not hitting them leave it up to the beast down low. Zabin Hunter (6-3 ’19 F/C Philadelphia) is only a 6-3 post player but he looks and plays like he’s 6-7. He plays with such a high motor and his rebounding IQ is crazy high. JT Vance (6-1 ’20 G/F Union) is about as tough and smart as they come on the court. He doesn’t look that athletic but he will fool you. He is a solid rock for Union. Jamarcus Jones (6-4 ’21 C Union) has so much potential to be a next level player and I’ll keep an eye on his development over the next few years.

Baldwyn vs Strayhorn
From Strayhorn HS
Strayhorn, MS
(B) Baldwyn Bearcats 22-3 (2A Baldwyn, MS) 78
MS #63 2A #5
Strayhorn Mustangs 5-15 (2A Sarah, MS) 56
MS #249 2A #33
Notes: The senior duo of Cam Wicks (5-11 ’19 G Baldwyn) and Josh Hester (5-11 ’19 G Baldwyn) couldn’t miss in the first half connecting on 7 three’s. Riley Hoard (6-4 ’20 F/C Baldwyn) controlled the paint the whole game for the Bearcats. Kobe Williams (6-2 ’20 G Baldwyn) did what Kobe Williams does. He did a little bit of everything good. Deonta Jones (5-9 ’19 G Strayhorn) had 19 points and 11 boards. He has one of the best and fastest shots in Mississippi. He could’ve easily had a triple-double if his teammates had been hitting their shots. He’s developed into a nice passer. He is more of a combo guard now with his nice handles, shiftiness, speed bursts and passing. The last few years he was just a two guard that scored in bunches. Next level Coaches need to see him. Corey Ward (5-10 ’21 G Strayhorn) transferred to Strayhorn from Coldwater and he was a great addition to the Mustangs. He’s a nice guard that’s very similar to Jones. I’ll keep an eye on him over the next few years.
