Lewisburg at New Albany Recap 11-4-21

Thursday November 4, 2021

From New Albany Middle School

New Albany, MS

(G) Lewisburg Lady Patriots 3-1 (6A Olive Branch, MS) 54

New Albany Lady Bulldogs 1-1 (4A New Albany, MS) 38

Notes: Lewisburg was led by a couple of super sophomores. Allison Irby (5-9 ’24 G/F Lewisburg 18 pts 2 3’s 14 reb 1 ast 5 st) and Allie Carroll (5-11 ’24 G/F Lewisburg 23 pts 2 3’s 12 reb 3 ast 1 blk 1 st) will be trouble for opposing teams the next couple years. Irby is a wing with some speed and a knack for getting into the lane. She rebounded well and used her speed to jump the passing lanes. Carroll is a unheard of gem. She looked like a well polished college player. To my surprise at the end of the game I found out that she was just a sophomore that didn’t even play AAU at all. What a hidden secret for the basketball world to find out about. Her best asset is the way she moves without the ball. She moves so well and gets open with ease. She has good size for the next level and can handle the ball very well. She is also a high level passer around the paint. She also knocked down a couple long balls too. Lewisburg also has some added size in Laney Moss (5-11 ’22 C Lewisburg 8 pts 10 reb 2 ast 1 st) and Haylie Hodges (5-10 ’22 F Lewisburg 5 pts 1 3’s 3 reb 5 ast 2 st). That also lands Coach Tipton a starting lineup featuring 5-11, 5-11, 5-10 and 5-9. That’s tough.

Madison McDonald (5-10 ’22 F New Albany 9 pts 1 3’s 8 reb 2 ast 2 blk 5 st) had a solid game for the Lady Dawgs. Hannah Finley (5-2 ’24 G New Albany 13 pts 2 3’s 1 reb 1 ast 7 st) showed up in the second half. She brought the energy to keep New Albany in the game. All but 3 points of her stats came in the second half. Her quick hands produced 7 steals in the second half alone.

Notes: This was the Kamron Carter (6-1 ’22 PG New Albany 36 pts 2 3’s 4-4 ft 4 reb 2 ast 2 st) show. Kam used his speed to drop a 30 piece for the Bulldogs. He would hit the speed button and look like a cheat code when getting to the rack. Once he got there he has the brakes to stop on a dime. As a matter of fact, he has to have the best brakes in the state. He can stop and pop or stop and maneuver his body in weird ways. If there were a MHSAA Twister championship he would easily be the winner. I know he looks unconventional when he does it but he it works. He might have legs and arms all over when getting around the defender. He had a solid sniper he could kick to in his younger brother Chris Carter (5-11 ’23 G New Albany 18 pts 4 3’s 4-4 ft 3 reb 1 ast 1 charge taken). Another college level prospect for Coach Shettles is Michael Smith (6-5 ’22 G/F New Albany 10 pts 7 reb 2 ast 2 st). He has so much potential and he shows it on a handful of plays every game. I like comparing him to Tyler Stevenson from New Hope that is currently at Southern Miss. College Coaches were scared of Tyler coming out of high school but I told them take him, hold him and let the light come on. When the light comes on for Big Mike he is going to be an all-conference type of player. Then you have the big question for the future of New Albany. There is a lot of doubt sometimes when 8th graders are brought up to play with the big boys. 8th grader Braden Shettles (6-2 ’26 G New Albany 6 pts 3 reb 1 ast 1 st) made his high school debut. He didn’t have any issues playing up. He actually looked like an experienced sophomore or junior on the court. He played with confidence and proved that he belongs. It’s going to be fun watching him over the next 5 years wearing a Bulldog jersey.

Lewisburg can’t be overlooked in this game either. They are a very tough and gritty team that fought hard in the contest. They would cut the lead to 5 on several occasions but couldn’t get past that hump. Coach Tipton has a team loaded with younger guys that all play very solid. Tybious Ware (6-0 ’25 F Lewisburg 17 pts 1 3’s 4 reb 1 ast 1 st) put up an impressive game for a freshman. Noah Jorgensen (5-8 ’24 G Lewisburg 14 pts 4 3’s 2 reb 3 ast 2 st) and Josiah Nelson (5-0 ’24 PG Lewisburg 13 pts 1 3’s 2-2 ft 1 reb 4 ast 3 st) were two very solid sophomore guards for Lewisburg. Nelson is a very dangerous true point that can find the open man. Jorgensen is a knockdown shooter that will proved Nelson with plenty of assists the next few years.
