Baldwyn, MS
(B) East Union Urchins 4-3 (2A Blue Springs, MS) 41
Hamilton Lions 1-1 (1A Hamilton, MS) 52
Notes: It took Hamilton a quarter or so to wake up and get going in the early morning game. Qyatavius Blunt (6-0 ’23 SG Hamilton 18 pts 4 3’s 13 reb 2 ast 3 st) was the only Hamilton player to get going early and continue to the end and that produced him Player of the Game honors. Kyzer Verner (6-0 ’25 G/F Hamilton 14 pts 2 3’s 6 reb 4 ast 5 st) is a very solid athlete for Coach Garvin also.

(B) Falkner Eagles 6-2 (1A Falkner, MS) 75
Alcorn Central Bears 4-8 (3A Glen, MS) 63
Notes: Falkner plays with a certain level of swag. They jumped out early with a big lead to help get the win. Coach Hopper did a masterful job of having his guys prepared. So much that he barely got up and coached his guys. They ran the offense and controlled the game with only minimal guidance. Darren Binkley (5-10 ’23 SG Falkner 20 pts (11 in 4th qtr) 3 3’s 9-10 ft (all in 4th qtr) 4 reb 1 st) did some stat stuffing in the fourth quarter to earn Player of the Game honors. Chris Nunley (5-8 ’25 G Falkner 12 pts 3 3’s 6 reb 1 ast 1 st) started the game out like a man on a mission and was going to be for sure the Player of the game but he ended up spending a lot of time on the bench with foul trouble. Hunter Griffin (6-0 ’23 G Falkner 12 pts (6 in 4th qtr) 6 reb 2 ast 4 st 3 chargers taken) and Elijah Mauney (5-9 ’25 G Falkner 22 pts 4 3’s 8 reb 1 st) could’ve both easily walked away with Player of the Game honors with big performances. Not filling up the stat sheet but quarterbacking the team from the high post was Rod Ruedas (5-10 ’23 G Falkner 7 pts 1 three 2 reb 9 ast). He made the game easy for all of his teammates. His vision and passing ability opened the court up for a lot of open shots.

(B) Wheeler Eagles 3-3 (1A Wheeler, MS) 45
West Bolivar Eagles 3-2 (1A Rosedale, MS) 40
Notes: I had this game marked as must see. I knew it was going to be a defensive “eagle” fight with Rosedale being traditionally dominant on the defensive end and then you had the evil defensive genius in Coach Rick Howell. It did not disappoint. At one point of the game Wheeler was playing a triangle and two. Both of the players that were being face guarded stood in the half court line corner and we watched a good old three on three basketball game. I loved it. Nyshaun Hutcheson (6-3 ’23 F Wheeler 20 pts 2-2 ft 6 reb 1 st) earned Player of the Game honors with his hard play down low. Kane Spencer (6-2 ’23 G Wheeler 15 pts 5-6 ft 9 reb 1 ast) looked really good for Wheeler in the defensive slug fest.

Hatley Tigers 4-4 (3A Amory, MS) 49
Notes: I saw Cayson Williams (’24 F/C Hatley 16 pts 18 reb 1 ast 1 blk 2 st 1 charge taken) last year and he looked like a big, strong monster. He looked even better this year. He has a soft touch and the ball always finds him. He rebounds at such a high level with force. This beast is a headache for all opposing coaches and players. His near 20-20 game eraned him Player of the Game honors. Landon Sappington (5-8 ’23 G Belmont 30 pts (18 in 4th qtr) 6 3’s (4 in 4th qtr) 4 reb 1 ast) fired it up in the last frame trying to get Belmont back into the game.

(B) Saltillo Tigers 7-1 (5A Saltillo, MS) 67 OT
West Union Eagles 9-1 (1A Myrtle, MS) 66
Notes: Saltillo had bigs problems. I know I put bigs because Saltillo lost 2 bigs during the game with injuries. JT Beasley (6-3 ’24 PF Saltillo 3 pts 3 reb 1 ast 2 st) and Demetrius Duffy (6-6 ’25 C Saltillo 11 pts 3-4 ft 1 reb 3 blk 1 st) both went down during the game with injuries allowing West Union to fight back in and even take the lead with 3:17 remaining in the game. Gunner Wesson (6-2 ’24 G Saltillo 27 pts (9 in 4th qtr) 4 3’s 5-6 ft 7 reb 3 ast 1 blk 1 st) was able to hit the corner bank three to send the game into overtime. His effort to send Saltillo into OT hepled him win Player of the Game honors. Matthew Armstrong (6-3 ’23 F Saltillo 10 pts (6 in overtime) 7 reb 1 blk) had a solid overtime frame to help give Saltillo the win. Jon Grey Morrisson (’26 F/C West Union 20 pts 1 three 9 reb 1 ast 6 st 3 blk) was a big find for West Union. He is long, tall and plays with a good motor. He’s a good one to keep an eye on over the next few years.
