Pontotoc, MS
(B) West Union Eagles 16-3 (1A Myrtle, MS) 69 OT
McNairy Central Bobcats 5-6 (3A Selmer, TN) 65
Notes: I know this is going to be a very unpopular opinion here but this game was the best game I saw at the Tangle. Yes, Biloxi/Starkville was a heavyweight fight that lived up to the billing but this was an early morning opening game that was awesome. Both teams did everything they could to win this overtime game. Mistakes were very limited and it was some great basketball. Greer Manning (5-11 ’24 F West Union 14 pts (6 in OT) 4-5 ft (in OT) 6 reb 3 ast 2 st) stepped up in OT to help his guys get the win. Cole Morris Willard (’24 G West Union 17 pts 1 three 1 reb 2 ast) connected on the buzzer beater to send the game to overtime. McNairy Central got very balanced production from the Bobcats.

Notes: This was my first time seeing the Pernell twins and they looked pretty impressive in the win. Kyren “Ky” Pernell (6-3 ’23 G Horn Lake 21 pts 3 3’s 2 ast 4 st) earned the MVP award and Kylen “Dimp” Pernell (6-3 ’23 G Horn Lake 19 pts 3 3’s 2 reb 2 ast 1 st) was right there with him in the running. Starkville Yellowjackets 14-4 (6A Starkville, MS) 58
Notes: The championship match provided intensity and it came down to the wire. Coach Windham and his guys came to the north to battle the powerhouse contenders and had an impressive showing in the win. Duran Parish (6-3 ’23 G Biloxi 20 pts (10 in 4th qtr) 1 three 3 reb 2 ast 3 st 1 blk) was very smooth in the win for the Indians. Makhi Myles (6-7 ’23 G/F Starkville 19 pts (13 in 2nd half) 1 three 6-6 ft 18 reb 2 blk 1 st) notched a big double-double in the loss.

Jaylyn Tyler (6-0 ’24 G Olive Branch 15 pts (13 in 2nd qtr) 2 3’s 3-3 ft 4 reb 3 ast) didn’t enter the game until the second quarter and played sparingly the rest of the game but was still dominant in the limited minutes he played.
